Steve,
You forgot to put the legal disclaimer!
These bikes are for use by experienced riders only! Although gentile as a pussycat, if you wick them past half you may experience a "woodie" that could last for hours! If your "woodie" lasts for more than four hours you should consult your MD and get your glands cleaned out while there! The experience of "woodies" is common for riders over 40 years of age and can result in large financial losses due to reports of Montesas being set by the curb for reclamation.
Lowering of gearing so not to catapult your sorry "woodie" wearing a-se over things including the wifes sofa and auto should also be avoided as this may lead to premature evacuation of proper "woodie" with the spousal unit! Never show it untill the proper time!
Be safe and always wear a helmet when you ride!
-
Water entry and resulting corrosion are the big factors, not normal wear. Whatever type ov grease, use plenty around the bushings and entry points and keep away with the powerwasher. You can clean around these areas by hand an re apply more waterproof grease to protect things without disassembly and between normal maintenance. Just apply more grease to prevent water entry.
An ouce of prevention! Then you do not have to do them once a month!
That is unless you are using it as a submarine!
There is a minimal amount of slack from new, things have to move. This translates to a slight click or free play when lifting the rear of the bike when stationary. If your click becomes a "clunk" you need to ck things out. Disassemble and inspect things, as many times there are only one or two that are bad and the rest just need cleaning and repacking.
Then there are the "doubleclack" ones! Never had any maintenance! Get out your wallet!

I have checked on this issue and the results are similar you your findings, BUT!
The oil quantities are correct. The levels are correct. The problem is getting all the oil out of the
fork on the cartridge side. You have to pump it for 20 minutes. Then when
you put oil back in, pump for 20 minutes again, to get all the air out of
the cartridge to verify level.
Personally, I think the measured quantity out and back in should be fine for a majority of fluid exchange, and with minimal problems. But you would still want to pump them a bit to be sure of no trapped air prior to verifing level.
This would probably apply to the similar Paioli forke on the Betas as well, but not sure.
So if your seals are leaking and you do not have a good starting point on quantity removed, get ready to pump a while!
I think I will just order an '08 model, or maybe a red rimmed Caby, or a 4t with red rims? Choices, choices!
-
Whew, lucky rascal.
The IOM sounds like more fun, maybe it will not rain more over there!
Hey, big congrats to you guys! Well done!
I need to send Pat a six pack, of DrPepper! Does he know what that is?
-
Not quite sure what you are referring to if they are both '03 models as far as "series".
My "03 2.9 was a "powerhouse" and could be difficult for a clubman to manage. A 2.5 of that range may be better.

Another post unanswered so I will chime in.
Find a bike in the best nick you can. A 250 is fine for all but the most advanced in most cases. There are few problems throuout the years if the bike is lubed well and air filters are kept well.
-
Smage, turn in your tickets, you ain't goi'n back this year!
Nigel Dabster will have to tell us how that effects the SPEA thing. I thought Patrick might still be in the running, but maybe not now?
-
Sorry missed your point there.
No prob Nigel, there really was'nt one. Should have put "For others opinions, start at top of list." Ha!
I have stirred the pot all I am going to. For now!
I personally like to see the young "up and cummers" like Alexz in the frey with the kids! They really get together and push each other it seems.
And that's all I am saying 'bout that!
-
Yea, we have a couple of "Dads" around here too! Sections will kill you! I need a hinge in the middle of the bike, a rest stop in mid section, and umbrella girls at the end cards just to collect my honest 3. The old farts can for the most still outride the lot on an old TY or something. Makes me feel really old AND dumb!

Well, seems the man in the know has clarified the issue and roumor. Nuff said!
Bottom line, don't misinterprit what I said. It is simple really. All are welcome , and all welcomed on an exhibition basis, just no need to send top level WTC riders to enter the US competition, not a competition any longer. Just a different level!
If I could send Bruce Lee over to your house to kick your ass, chances are you would not learn much, except maybe how to get off the ground and get it kicked again! Does no good!
We are working on that next level, this years TDN should be different! Coming up soon! I think we have a top team this year, should be something to watch! We shall see, good luck to them all!

Just a thought, and a bit of experience with experimenting as I have already dun it! You can do what you like.
Even in the tightest sections, a change to a lower gearing is not neccessary. A single tooth on the front is equal to a change of four in the rear which is easy but way too much. A change of two on the rear is more acceptable but not neccessary.
You MUST simply try your best to master the clutch, and adding the 7.5wt ATF will not help you as it becomes too grabby and difficult to find the sweet spot,(unless you are a pro) which you must master! The oil spec is 10-40, much thicker, and allows better feel for the "sweet spot" in which you can apply the PROPER amount of power in any situation, reguardless of gearing and revs. Try it on a simple slick, grassy hillside, anywhere, any gear.
Practice riding ANY section(even the tight ones) in ANY gear from 1-3 and see the difference. It takes practice, but you will be better off and able to handle situations better. Another little tip, the shortie clutch levers have a longer arm to the sweet spot on the lever and thus a more progressive feel, ck it out! On the medium clutch lever, positioning of the finger is much more critical. As is staying out of the mid range "hit" area when performing quick and precice maneuvers off the bottom such as floaters which can throw you off!
Once again we verge upon th area where and why i have stuck with the properly jetted Dellorto, as after a number of experimentations, it is just easier to live with, as power is not the issue, but controlability of the beast. Nothing wrong with the K carb, smooth, but just more agressive it seems! Takes some getting used to! I wish for a 26mm version of it, but not available!
Cheers, and m2c, keep at it!
-
Our condolences as well and best to the family.
Another piece if trials history passes, very sad, wish I heard only a few of his interisting stories!
-
No, it just keeps me from hitting the caps all the time! Never said I could compose paragraphs!
-
Sam, have you blown a seal-------lately?
If for some reason it got too hot(lean), it may have dropped a valve seat in the thing, or you could have a flat cam causing the excess clearance! My guess the valve seat! Pull the head!
Cheers,
MC
-
Chunk them! I have plenty of old ones!
-
Welcome!
Is it cool---------- there? Maybe? Can I visit!
-
That is easy, THEY DON'T LIVE HERE!
Most only come for money! They have no vested interist in the US or its riders, they are only in it for themselves! Or whatever manufacturer is paying them! Crosset was a good example, self centered useless P.O.S. in my book!
At least Bruce came here to live, ride and learn. AND STAY! Same with David! Tommi worked his way doing shows and schools!
There are better riders to be a HIRED GUN, all it takes is money if you want to buy a US Championship with imports! B.S.! I am just not sure we want or need that sort of help!
And yet, not that any are not welcome to come and play with the kids and the rest! Some can scratch a living on their own good standings. TTC may be looking for a resident Pro! Thats another topic!
-
-
I wonder where the resident nerds are at yet on the Vista thing? Seems you just cannot get anything new without it unless you go to the Business class which may still give you an XP option.
Although I have computers out the wazoo at work and home, and have to try and maintain most of them, some aging, I still have no laptops in service. Been looking, but scared ov the Vista thing as well! All just a pain in the butt for me just to try and provide a bit more mobility in the shop environment. Otherwise still running XP and 2000 in a hardwired environment for reliability in the shop!
-
Although I agree with Dom in most aspects, I do still believe that the NATC series should be for American Riders(north, south and Canada) much like the Euro Championships are for the Euro's, and the WTC for all.
It is good exposure for for trials and trials riders, but should be limited to an exhibition basis.
The NATC National Championship Series should be re-named, Championship of the Americas and be left at that. Former WTC championship riders do not qualify for series points. You are either a resident citizen(not temporary, which means 2 years or more) or you are not! And if you are not, you are welcome, but!
Nothing personal here, I am sure Shaun is a top notch fellow and I would like to see him succeed in many ways, even giving our lads some higher competition. There just needs to be a limit, it is simply not their Championship, not about money either just to "hire" a rider to win a series over our own. That is simply a publicity stunt for an importer or brand!!
If it were, I understand one D. Lampkin may have a bit of spare time on his hands next year, yes, it could be done! All depends on what you want!
I should add my bitches as well, just to get it off my chest. Spent a fair amount of time with Tommi, good guy. Worked hard, did lots of schools an exhibitions, donated his time for things like Training Days and spent quality time with clubs and members depending upon where he was at.
Same for Chaves, he WAS a resident for many years! Always helpful to anyone!
Again for Bruce! These guys are dedicated trials guys! Pity his brother could not stay longer as well.
Best thing I can recall out of Fast Freddy, the Belgian Waffle was the entertainment he provided when he knocked off a section marker for a fiver in our section. Wish I had an audio tape of he and his dumb ass minder. Sounds a lot like a baby crying, so you get the picture!
And who even said Shaun could win it? Yea, he would have a good run, but if last Sunday was any example, he might just have to be watching out for his backside some more, else there is someone just waiting to plant a front wheel there!
I do intend to present this issue to our NATC rep for further discussion once again at the meeting. Hopefully others will follow! Maybe not.

Zipper,

"Ray P. cannot sandbag forever!"
I don't think Ray is sandbagging at all. What is he supposed to do? quit the sport? He is an adult and has a job. Is he supposed to risk his life and limb on the Pro obstacles just because people think he is sandbagging? If he went into one of the age bracket classes, he would win that too. He is a great rider that for whatever reason doesn't want to ride the Pro class. I don't blame him. Not that he is too old or capable, but is the reward worth the risk for him? He would be the only one to answer that question and I think he already has by riding the expert class.
Yea, I know what you mean Fill, I have all those same problems. I'm just waiting for the NATC to open up that SR Novice class so I don't have to put up with them pesky kids kicking my butt all the time!!
No, really, I am glad to see Ray have some competition in the EX class. With Travis out and Will moving up, there was a void. Lots of good competition in the EX ranks, but can't hang with the old man, at what, 33 or so?
Bailey is young, what maybe 16 or so? You got other young ones like Mizell in that class. Then you got Colton who wants to just jump to pro class? Many of which would do well to hang in EX for a while, like Will, and take a few lessons from the "old man".
Ray got what he wanted, a class championship! For the most part, he could do it again on a 125 and the results would not be much different!
-
Last i seen, RYP, Lewisport, Jitsie were all sponsors.
Not to forget TTC!
Just look at the Donner pic from V-mar I put on the other thread, see that RYP sticker 'o the skid lid!
Yea, poor Bruce will have to go back to SA with that tatoo on his bum! Too! Cheers Bruce!
