Sewing machine could be a good description of the soft powerband. That can be an advantage for novices or those of us with low skill sets. Has anyone ever tried a non vacuum carb on one? I had a Tiger 800 that actually sounded like a sewing machine at highway speeds

I am also older than you and started later..... As to bike; the trouble with old cheap bikes is they have had a hard life and (usually) some suspect maintainance. Older models like the Rev 3 are worth a look and ride OK. I have noticed that bikes are often cheaper in Scotland so you might well be lucky. The Beta bikes also tend to be more robust and represent good value for money. We started with a Rev 3 but I soon moved on and spent rather a lot more 😁 I love all motorcycles and need very little excuse to overspend on them. The missus had an 2014 250 Evo for a couple of years and it was very good. We paid 2300 for it. It is still going strong with the new owner (brother of a friend) and will - I am sure - give many more years good service. She had trouble starting it so she went electric but otherwise we would have kept the bike a lot longer. We sold it for near enough what we paid for it. I had fitted a new brake rotor and m/c (the OE front brakes are not that great IMHO). Other than that a chain and sprocket (cheap) and a throttle cable. Good luck finding a fun machine and all the best with riding it.

It will be difficult to pin point the noise without a bit of investigation. If you don’t mind a bit of spanner work there’s a few things you can try. Get a workshop manual if you don’t already have one, they are very useful. Firstly, take the chain off to see if taking load off the gearbox sprocket makes any difference. If not, put chain back on, you’ll need it on later. Drain the Gear oil and coolant Now you need to take the full right side canckcase cover off by removing the brake pedal and kickstart. The kickstart can be very tight on the shaft and can take some prying off. The bolts for the cover are various lengths so make a note or plan of what goes where. Be careful when lifting the case off, use the pry tabs. There is a shim/washer on the water pump shaft and kickstart shaft that like to disappear. They usually stick to the cover. Take the clutch apart and basket off, ideally you need clutch holder and impact gun to get the 36mm nut off the basket. (it can be done without with some improvisation) If the sound is still there when spinning the rear wheel it will likely be gearbox related and possibly an engine split. If the sound has stopped, it’s in something you’ve taken off. Good luck

Yeah that’s what I thought strange as it’s coming from flywheel side, I’m not sure on the output shaft or gearbox sprocket, only happens when in gear, moving, no noise when in neutral or clutch is pulled in, I’ve had it a less than a year
-
Drain the gearbox oil and check for metal. The flywheel is on the left side. It would be unusual to have clutch related noise there. Could it be output shaft, gearbox sprocket or chain related? Does it only happen when the bike is moving in gear or does it also happen when moving but in neutral? Does the sound not happen at all when stationary? Is the bike new to you or have you owned it a while? Just looking for a bit more information

@FHG speak with Glen at Rockshox, he will give you all the advice you could ever need about shocks gary@rockshocks.co.uk
-
Question - for the rear shock - they are seized down I think. What measurements do I need to get something new? I just want it to work - does not need to be vintage....?
-
For tyres, on my Beamish I have Pirelli MT43s, good enough for me.
-
Thank Kev - I will check out the shock idea. I don't need all vintage yet, just want to get it running. I rebuilt the carb and after a few leaks and fails, it started right up after 20-25 years!
-
Thanks trapezeartist, good shout and maybe I have to rethink the budget, don’t want to go overboard on my first bike, want to test the water, but also want to be realistic, what should I budget would you reckon, £1500?
-
51 is young. Many riders start trials when they feel too old for whatever they were doing before. £1k is a challenging budget if you're going to get something ready-to-go. Remember that needing tyres, chain, sprockets, whatever could rapidly increase the final cost of a bargain bike.

The engine in an RTX is Russian! A Minsk 2 stroke engine that was made in Balerus, Russia.
-
When it’s moving, even if cruising at 5mph slightly on the throttle, second you clutch it it goes away

Lovely original machine @FHG Tyres are fit for the skip but lots of choice to be had. ive just put rockshox rear shocks on my beamish and they are fab, depends if you want original or an upgrade that works. Kev
-
Yeah, he was asking about the 301. The 300 cota is slow compared to the 301. The Montesa has the best suspension and handling. Yeah, the beta std runs more like a sewing machine. Never liked the 4 T Beta.

S3 HARD ROCK STEEL £65.00 ish not as glamourous or light as other handbags but If they are good enough for a rider the calibre of Adam Raga who would say that they are not "Top shelf" , plus you save a stack of money over the GUCCI ones. There is only one down side that you will never have to buy another pair of rests ever again .Just file them now and again to keep them grippy. If you are fond of Aluminium Footrests then S3 CURVE.£90.00 ish . I do not work for S3. They just make quality stuff that are then copied by others.

GOOD Day -complete rookie here - I am looking for advice, feedback and connections. I touched a 2 stroke for the first time in 30 years and I am hooked. This is my dad's bike, I think he bought it new and raced it and gave it to me in the 90s. My dad passed away last year so I decided to rebuild it. I rebuilt the carb, reused everything and it fired right up. First goal, tires and shocks - get it rideable so a third generation can try it and then I will pull it apart next winter and rebuilt it. Initial questions: - everything is original. Tires are in bad shape, cracked any way to keep them? - Rear Shocks - completely seized - not sure how to size and replace them? - Front shocks - ChatGPT tells me I can rebuild them, they work but rubber is cracked and oil would be 40+ old.

I need new footpegs for a Vertigo Nitro 250 2022. Any recommendations?
-
Is the bike moving or stopped when pulling the clutch helps?
-
Where did you get the jet blok gasket ?

My 04 Jarvis normally runs 130mm from top of compressed forks with no springs fitted, 5W fork oil is what I use
