ACU Discussion

I’m hoping to start riding trials soon, but I don’t understand how the ACU works with centre groups and A , B (or open) event status? Can I ride in any group, or just the one my club is in? And can I ride in the AMCA trials as well? Could someone explain? Thank you

You are Clerk of Course and is running a combined youth and adult trial. There are 12 sections to be ridden 4 times. The youth and adults all start at section 1. After approx. 90mins the secretary of the trial is approached by a rider under 16 in tears in fact he is terrified. After settling the young rider down the rider complains that he has been verbally abused by an adult rider. The secretary has directed the rider to you to deal with. Welcome news from the ACU. For many years the ACU has provided Road Traffic Act insurance cover for riders in events that have included the use of the public highway. With this, until now the Organisers have had to collect premiums from Riders during the Signing On process and the Competitors have been asked to complete and sign additional forms and declarations – this was a necessary evil to ensure the RTA cover was in place and applicable to that event. Filling in an ACU entry form... its asking for my name address and what bike I have in my garage... Having had a break in and my bikes stolen in the past, I’m rather hesitant about filling in these details. What happens to these forms and what’s to stop undesirables reading this information?

I notice that some of the Spainish trial championship rounds have youth and Adults on the same weekend, so why can't we do that in this country? Some of the top youth riders ride in the Expert class anyway so nothing would be any different. You could also put some of the C/D and ladies rounds together on the same weekends. The whole British championship weekends would be much bigger events with say the B class lads riding on the Saturday, and then the A class doing the same sections as the Experts on the sunday, i know you could'nt do it at every round but i'm sure it would work at some. After all the Spainish do it that way and it has'nt done thier riders any harm. …

I have mentioned this in another topic, but felt it may be worth asking the question. Years ago the ACU offered annual motorcycle insurance that covered usage on the road during a trial but was discontinued. Not sure why. With clubs now having to offer additional RTA cover at a fee could it not be worth the ACU starting up the insurance cover again?

Anyone know the dates and venues for this years British trials championship. Might try and go and watch some this year. Cheers

Many of us are still blindly, all be it with the very best of intentions, doing our best to complete and sign the RA forms for our events. I was wondering how things are progressing with some kind of formal risk assessment training and/or a generic set of risk assessments for all trials Clerks of the Course to be able to refer to?

So it seems that the ACU have decided to change the rules in 22A and a stop is now allowed without penalty (thats how I read it anyway), The only stipulation now is "No backward movement". What is the general view of this change. Personally I would have preferred it before the change. I am now trying to workout the difference between 22A & 22B.

Was talking trials to a mate today and got onto the subject of the Miller classes. he suggested I have a look at the "revised" rules for 2016. Is it me or has the point been completely missed ? There is STILL no difference in the classes to distinguish between a Pre unit big banger and a sub 190lb James/Bantam/Cub. Or have I read last years regs or the wrong page completely ?

Last year I posed a question concerning one of our events which we were planning to make 'No Inspection Allowed.' The idea was to make the single lap road trial, simple and straight forward and suitable for riders to ride without needing to stop and look at the sections. I've ridden trials like this in the past and really enjoy this style of event. However, at the time I did have concerns as to the safety implications of riding into a section blind; if the worst came to the worst and someone was injured. Great explanation of how things work at the ACU John, enlightend me for one. Can you give a run down of what happens to all the tenners that go into the kitty via the licence and how the money is distributed back into the sport and what for.

hi, I'm not sure, but I thought I heard a discussion a couple of weeks ago that the ACU was considering working with an insurance company (Carole Nash?) to provide an insurance policy for trials bike, allowing them to get a tax disc, to compete in road trials. This seems like a good idea, especially for those who may not have a bike insurance policy for road bike. Is this being considered by the ACU ? A policy which covers the limited amount of use and distance travelled should be more cost effective than a general bike policy. In my own case, both my road-registered bikes are classed as 'classics' (1978 and 1980) and in infact reduces the insurance for my modern …

Hi, I have noticed that some Trials & Enduro clubs operate as a Limited liability company, is there a good reason for this & what are the pro`s & con`s for doing this ? . My local ACU motor cycle club runs both trials & enduro`s but are not a limited club, can anyone shed any light on this. Many thanks

As a spectator at the last event I had words with competitors that were larking around off course, and nearly run over by a child jumping his bike. Its not my place to tell them its a responsible parents job. If hit by a competitor who is doing stunts or practicing off section,( not just children,) am I or the competitor insured if any injuries are sustained? Some parents seem to let there children go off and try obstacles that arn't marked out for that meeting. Is this acceptable behaviour?

So I turned up to this event today, only to be told the trial was last week (aparently it was really good) ... a little while ago there was another trial that appeared on the list for a couple of weeks and then disappeared the day before ... I can understand how difficult it is to co-ordinate the ACU events list, but is this a common problem? Is there anywhere alse I can check for cross-club events in the UK?

Never worked or found out how this works and how you get upgraded? never know what to put on the entry list Inter or Expert? may even still be a novice for all I know. Can anyone post how it works - how you get upgraded - and who upgrades you Ta
