Bultaco

  1. Started by monty349,

Back in the day my Sherpa 198A had what I believed to be an aftermarket one piece kick start lever that swivelled from the bottom rather than the top, it also hugged the cylinder head closer than the original type. From what I remember it had Bultaco stamped on it Does anyone know who made it ? and if they are still available?

Hi the baffles in the mid box have came loose inside the mid box, any ideas for an easy fix. It also has a strange after market tail pipe do you think this will effect performance. Once I have cleaned and repaired the exhaust does it require any packing? PHOTOS http://s810.photobucket.com/albums/zz27/my...before%20start/ Cheers

I've just tried to reassemble my brakes, thoroughly cleaned and with brand new shoes. However, neither the back or the front fit; they're too big. I've found an old post which suggests filing down the shoe material with a rasp but first of all I wanted to check that my cams haven't been butchered. The only photos I can find on the internet are of old rusty ones and of poor detail but they don't look like they have what mine do. Both of my cams have this extra bit of metal bent around them. Is this normal or has someone tried to make an old pair of shoes last longer by beefing up the cam? I'm expecting that without these bits on the new shoes might fit......... but obvious…

Hi there, I have just bought here in Mexico a Bultaco Sherpa, which the vendor was advertising as a 1971 Sherpa 250, but on inspection appears to be a 1974 Sherpa 350 (model 125). It was bought unseen (comparatively cheap, that is my excuse) and when it was delivered to me I discovered that the frame appears to have been repaired / strenthened on the downtube near the headstock. I have had a good look and cannot establish whether the frame fractured and was welded and braced, or whether it has been strengthened - I am inclined to believe the former, given that the forks are slightly bent, suggesting that it may have sustained a heavy frontal impact - the front rim still …

  8. Hi I an running out of patience with the Amal Concentric. To explain the background on my ground up rebuild my target was to get the bike original in all things. To this end I purchased a new Concentric Mk 1. It is Jetted correctly runs realy well when the engine is warm and then always starts first time. However when cold it is B**** and needs 20 - 30 kicks to get going. It tickles up with fuel over flowing so there is no fuel shortage. Sammy Miller, James @ JHS racing have told me I am wasting my time as the cold staring design is poor, and to get a Mikuni or DelOrto, well ok that may be the route. But surely Bultaco would not have put up with this problem when t…

Hi My target was to bring my Sherpa back to original Kit campeon spec. To this end i have fitted a new middle box and a new triangular back box (both supplied by Butaco UK). When the back box is fitted it kills all low speed response and it feels like engine gets bogged down until it about 1/8 throttle, also it does not want to start. Middle box outlet internal dia is 22mm dia and back box inlet and outlet bores are app 19.5mm dia, would a reduction of 3mm cause these problems? Remove the back box and all is fine, a bit loud (96 decibels) but it really works well, fires second or third kick and runs sweetly. I do not want to be refused a start because the bike is a …

Hi all, When I bought my Sherpa 199A the rear mudguard was missing & I have bought a pair of new Goneli plastic mudguards. Could someone be as kind as to measure the distance from the bottom edge of the rear mudguard (where it meets the airbox) around the inside radius of the mudguard to the first mounting hole so I can fix the guard in the correct position. Regards Dave.

So finally got the Sherpa T 175 all back together and it struck up after a few kicks. The issue I have is when I acquired the bike it wasn't actually running and as such I have no idea whether the carb or the jets where making for optimum performance. I can obtain new jets of course but I don't have a bench mark to work from. The bike has good compression and has just been re-ringed and has new gaskets. It has an Amal Mk2 concentric 2625 carb on it at present and the symptoms are as follows. Lumpy running and not able to obtain full revs. Its very smoky and currently running using 95 ron and and Castrol semi syn oil at a ratio of 50:1. Its difficult to start especi…

Hi All Just joined the forum. I've made plenty of visits as a guest and found it very useful so thought I'd join as I think I'm going to need plenty of advice with my project. Bought a 198A Sherpa T 1979/1980 vintage over the Christmas holiday as a retirement project. It's a bit of a wreck with everything falling into the 3 B's category. Bodged, bent or busted. However that's fine and going well so far. But I have a question that no one seems to know the answer to. So heres hoping. Before I bought the bike I did a bit of online research. I discovered, on this forum somewhere actually, that max power output of a 250 Sherpa was around 20 bhp compared to aroun…

Hi guys, first post here - my name is Chris, and I've been playing with trials bikes for about a year. I've just acquired a Sherpa, model 199 (possibly year 1979? - engine and frame numbers match, but can't remember anything else) which I'm in the process of rebuilding as a winter project. Not going for a show winner, but a good useable twinshock that I won't mind getting dirty. Seem to have 90% of the original parts, give or take what I bin/ruin, and is all going to plan so far, but I could use some advice on a few wee problems (and there will probably be more as I go...) I've just had inserts machined and brazed on to correct oval-ed holes for the swing arm pin, and ha…

Anyone know if the original style rear brake cable that had a bend in it where it located into the swingarm is available from anywhere I know Hugh's Bultaco have a pattern with a bend in it but they are a last resort due to the import duty. I've only just been stung for some Barnett clutch plates from the US A far as I know only Venhill are available here but their cable doesn't have the bend and flexes far too much to get a decent pull on the brake arm. They refuse point blank to make me one to special order even though I can give them a pattern... really helpful, thanks a lot. The one I'm after is like this

Hi - My first (last) posting concerned head steadies; continuing in a similar engine bracketry vein, can one of you knowledgeable Bully fans tell me what the bracket on the left fits? This places the swing-arm pivot about 1/2" closer to a line through the engine mounting-bolt hole centres than the Sherpa 340 bracket on the right (which has the same hole spacing as the older-style alloy bracket 159.10-064). This the second time I've bought one of the these unidentified brackets (sight unseen, of course) and was assured by the sellers in each case that it was removed from a Sherpa; I had a feeling they were Pursang, but the only MX one I have is different again, as …

Can old Sherpas be registered for road use in the UK? I guess with frame and chassis numbers a logbook can be requested, I have a lighting coil so could easily fit on a set of high/low front and rear/stop lights. Cant imagine an old Sherpa 250 would be great on the road except for short runs to get to the trails but it would save having to trailer it about. Any thoughts on if you can get them road legal or if it's just daft?

Hi all, I'm new to the forum and just starting a ground-up restoration of my Sherpa T 199. I was wondering if someone can help me identify the shocks on the bike as they are rebuildable and I would like to fit a new seal kit to them after painting/chroming. I've attached a photo of one. Regards Dave.

  20. Hi I've have a 350 Sherpa which has a plastic tank 1979/80 model. Im look for another Sherpa 350 but I'm trying to get an original spec. Which Sherpa models/date had alloy tanks fitted as original and alloy mudguards ? Or were there optional extras etc. ... I particular like the look. My plan is to restore one to look good and one to use. Many thanks Mark
