Hi , looking for some help with my new to me 16 4rt. I was out on it today for a short while and brought it home and washed it then fired it up to burn some of the water of the engine and thought id let it run till the fan came on. It sat running for about 10-15 mins as was not sure when the fans normally come on and no sign of the fan coming on so turned it off. After further investigation , I have found no sign of a fan relay anywhere but found cut wires which had been taped up and insulated, two red , a blue and a black so I'm assuming this is the fan relay wires and why my fans not coming on. 1st question , will I have overheated it with it…

Hi does anyone know if the gear lever from a Montesa Honda MH200 is compatible with a mid seventies Cota 172 ? Thanks

  6. Started by rr62,

I’ve got the opportunity to buy an old 172 that needs a bit of TLC. I had a one year old one from Windsor Comp Shop way back in 1978 so quite a late one (with the stripes on the tank) which looked gorgeous but used to be a bit of a pain to start and maintain as a 16 year old with zero parental interest in my motorcycle antics. My questions are:- 1. Can you still get most parts for the 172? 2. Are there any decent (but not changing the look) upgrades that are available - eg. Electronic ignition, brake pads that actually stop, etc. 3. Any other massive things to look out for? Any pointers would be much appreciated! it’s either this or a Ve…

I recently became the owner of what I think is a and#39;70 Cota. Its in fairly decent shape and I think a previous owner was refurbishing it a bit. They were doing an ok job but a but were lacking in some of the details. The engine wasn't turning over at all. I assumed it was going to be a stuck piston from sitting. I have no idea how long it had been sitting. I pulled the head to find a brand new Tarabusi piston in the bore. I then pulled the engine covers off to see if something was amiss. No problems there. I then put a wrench on the crank nut and was able to turn the engine over with some difficultly, once it reach the upper half of the stroke it turned easil…

HI Guys, I apologise in advance for all the dumb questions. I'm told that its not if I foul a plug but when I foul a plug. I'm running a NGK B6HS plug. I've done two AHRMA Vintage trials (Sesquhatchee and Barber) plus practice in between and this afternoon coming back fromt the Swap meet at Barber to the Lot D parking (where all the dirt track people hang out) the bike rapidly lost power. When I got home I pulled the plug and checked that there was no spark when I kicked it over. I poped a new NGK into the plug cap and WALLA I got spark and the bike starts. So what should I do? 1) I'm running the needle all the way down although I don't know what needle jet the …

Hi Guys, I have a 1972 Montesa Cota 247 which runs great. The DPO put a shorty silencer on the back of the bike and it sounds like a shotgun going off. So I'm getting dirty looks from the moms (although the kids think it's way cool) due to the noise footprint of the bike. Is there an after market silencer I can put on the back that will quiet down this bike (lots). Or do I order the stockish looking silencer from Sammy Miller in Merry Old England. Is the SM silencer packed or is it just a chamber? I need to be a good neighbor in my own 'hood. Thanks in advance,

HI Guys. Todays dumb question is timing. I have learned to set 21 BTDC with a spark plug dial gage. I was wondering if anybody has ever bothered trying something less in the 10 to 20 degree range. My reasoning is that I spend a lot of time riding in the idle to 2500 rpm range and 21 degrees is a compromise between fast runing and slow running motors. I am always trying to run slow as possible with little or no clutch so why not run the timing a little closer to TDC? 10 degrees? 15 degrees? Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Hi, There is currently one for sale near me at $2350. Is this model and year consider to be desirable vintage trials? Is it hard to find parts in the US? Any recommend/ issues/ notes? I will appreciate any help or thought.

I took the job of restoring my uncles montesa cota 247. The project has been on going for a few years now as I haven’t always had the time or money to get stuff done. But now I’m getting somewhere, all parts are polished, chromed or powder coated. I have the task of the engine now, once this is rebuilt I can begin to build the bike again! But the problem lies with the crankshaft mainly, when I dismantled the engine and started to take parts out/off I noticed the crankshaft is broke on the flywheel side. Each side of the woodruff key has broke off. The broken parts were still there just not fixed on. So my question is what can be done with this? I’m a welder/fabricat…

I am thinking of selling my cota 247 and don't know what to ask. It has had a full engine rebuild with new bearings, piston and rebore. Also has had rear wheel rebuild and new tyres. New Amal carb. It is road registered and MOTD. Looks a bit tatty but mechanically Excellant. What is it worth Thanks

The saga continues. Essentially the bike runs very well but is just hard to start, especially when warm. (Very hard to start... Making her un-usable.) Having bought a flywheel puller and re-adjusted the timing to be spot on, replaced the plug and condensor and consistently observe a good spark I am happy that my problem is not the ignition. The air filter is also in good order. The only remaining problem is fuel, I believe the engine to be flooding itself, the plug is very wet upon inspection after trying to start her. Could this because the mixture's too rich? Can I resolve this by lowering the needle on the throttle slide? Or am I barking up the wrong tree do you t…

  20. So, as most of you know my story I won't bother with that but in all my fettling to try and get it working I reset the points gap to open at 2.5mm before TDC. It was timed differently the the last owner previous to this reset. I use a cigarette paper in the points to feel the moment that it releases. I now experience a situation where she wont rev all the way out. It also feels nasty at high revs and looses power. I am wondering if the previous owner had the timing slightly advanced maybe? I know there is no advance mechanism so it's all about setting it where I'm happy with and getting it to run nicest in the rev range that I intend to use most, but at the moment des…
