Jon, I would never disagree with your reason, If Modern is not your cup off tea, I get it you will not greed them with open arms. Also I remember about 10 years back being at a modern event with a TS, I could not feel '' the love '' . It's unfortunate for us ( most of the time ) the older bike lovers who enjoy all type off bike an competition. The best time you can have is at Daytona USA during the Bike Week, you see everything. From Trial to Road Race and in between, Dirt Track and Motocross with vintage and....

Hi Jon
I'm a much better rider than the easy line that the organiser setup at our event, but i register in that category because I don't like the '' competition '' side off riding trial. I'm lucky that the organiser let me ride that way, what I do is return a scoring card ( they insist on giving me one ) with full score ( 5 in all sections ). Maybe they tolerate me because I ride both TS and Modern bikes and the fact that there is not al lot of rider, usually less than 20 also help. I would never be stupid enough to complain about the section laying. There is a low entry fee, I don't think they cover the expense, that I gladly pay. So no pressure on me. Am I just the only one that like it that way ? Since you are on this '' case '' Jon, can you explain to me why it seem impossible at many trials ?

I have TS and a ( not so ) Modern bike, an 03 Beta. I had some reserve before buying my modern bike because I'm an ordinary rider, and I know it, so I'll never be a participant in a modern bike competition. I really enjoy riding my Ty and it make me appreciate even more the suspension, the brake the gearing.... of the Beta. I go to TS comp. and bring both bike. What pi...s me off is when I hear '' Oh you ride a pogo stick ''. I usually keep my temper, but when it happen, I have to admit, it's hard.
I don't understand why someone is not welcome at a TS '' friendly competition '' with a modern bike ( and the other way around ). You should be brilliant enough, if you owned a trial bike to know what you get into, and the organiser of the event should also be brilliant enough to advertise the type of event. Is one type of trial bike a non curable a very painful sickness ? As long as you don't alter or destroy the sections with your bike ( or your attitude ), WELCOME AND HAVE FUN. But I'm old and I might not get the idea....

Merci billyt je vais suivre votre conseil, Thank's billyt I will follow your advise, and I plan to do the clutch mod ( clutch fix )

I live in Quebec, so the bike sit still for 4 month in the shed, from what I understand I should pull the clutch lever and ty it in that position for the winter ?

I stand on the peg about an inch away from the motor so the outside of the peg is close to the middle of my foot. I cannot say that it is very confortable, does anybody have the same problem and as anybody found a good solution.
I had the same problem with my Sidi '' Joel Robert '' in the 70's and with all the boots including the Forma Boulder that I wear today.

Yes nigel dabster I will do the job at home, I am thinking using a mountain bike tube as advice by peterh. I have a new tube for the front, is there something ( apart from cleaning the rim ) I should be aware off for the rear . Again it's my first tubeless change.

I am a Club level or C line rider, but I'm very experience. When I read that even if some parts are crap but they are OK for beginner I tend to bread fast and my blood pressure rise. Is the MT43 good or bad and why. That is the question, is it predictable, is it good in muddy terrain, is it good in rocky terrain compared to your alternative. And I'm sorry but 40 years ago I was.... you know what I mean.

So the 803GP front is working for you ? ( with the 803GP back )
-
History says Yamaha never show there card until they are ready, I would not be surprise to see David's wish to come true in a few years.

I have to admit I was a little lazy, I have not yet installed the rear Dunlop 803GP I bought a month ago. I now think that the old Dunlop front won't stay on the bike either. I can buy here Michelin, Pirelli, IRC or new Dunlop front. Any comment on your experience ?

Thank you all,dadof2 you spared me lots of work for nothing. I will ''exercise'' my left leg over the winter.

The more poutin I eat, the more difficult it will be to crank it in awkward situation ! ( seriously weight is not the issue, age maybe )

I also went for Forma Boulder, good price and very confortable.

A thicker base gasket would change the port timming. I would rather go for a thicker head gasket if avalable.

My 2003 Rev run realy well but it as a lot of compression and it's hard to kick. Is it a bad idea to lower the compression ?

I went to the riding area alone this weekend with my mind set on that issue. I chose a 100 foot long 45 to 50 degree hill with 1 to 6 inch loose rock and dirt to test. The result is no real winner : I guess I'm more confortable with the clutch out probably because I learned that way, I feel safer knowing I can blip the throttle if needed to get me out off trouble and I notice I have my clutch finger instinctively ready all the time. When I used the clutch, I just needed to be a little more careful not to lock the rear wheel.

I think roester is right, even the low hours bike will need refresh. As we say in french '' usé par les caresses '' , very low hour mean very low service. I'm not saying don't buy a low hour bike, but as roester said be prepared, just in case. I was when I bought a very nice Beta Rev 250 this summer, I spent around $250.00 in the next couple month. I don't regret buying the bike and I would buy it again even knowing what I spent on it.

The brake on both end of the Beta ( 250 ) are amazing compared to any TS I ever rode, after an hour or so in the mountain, I had figured out how to think about braking than gently pressured the pedal instead of pushing on the pedal and waiting for the result. So if I understand what you are saying, the best way is the way I am confident with ?

I've been riding bikes for a loooong time and It was always a crime ( or a call to the hospital ) to use the clutch when going down a steep hill, followed the same rule with the 75 TY that I've been riding the last 10 years. I bought a Beta Rev this summer and use the same technic, but it seems that modern bike riders use the clutch in steep descent, am I right ?
Guy
-
John do you use the same cable for clutch and front brake ?
Guy

I have tried trial glove in the past, but now I ride with mechanic glove. They have good feel, good gip on the handlebar but no protection.
