I think this is why everyone's trying to get you to drill that thar hole.
The air in there expands and contracts, depending on the engine temperature and the shock cooling from going through streams etc.. another reason you may find it very difficult to get things air tight?

Cheers Nige,
This is a bit of a 'catch -22' for me, powerful bikes (300 Gassers) and slow throttles, I don't like powerful bikes but..
Bear with me ,this is a bit long winded when you have to explain by typing...
I've found that when I'm practising on steps/faces where you hold the front wheel into the front face it gets complicated with a slow throttle:
You lock the brakes on when you stop then simultaneously bite the clutch and raise the throttle to 'nuzzle' the bike in (compressing the suspension) etc..etc....now the tricky bit:-
To jump up the obstacle you need to release the front brake (and back ),give the bike a squirt of throttle, pop the clutch, pull the bars and jump at the same instant ....yes?
With a slow throttle you have to move your whole hand/wrist and sometimes arm to get that squirt of throttle required to launch..this is very unsettling for your balance, never mind having to think about grabbing the front brake again a soon as you're on top of your obstacle.
A 'standard' throttle requires much less 'animation' of your right hand/arm so you can more easily gas then grab the front brake lever but if you overdo the throttle input :o
Ok? That's just for a single step/obstacle ,it all happens quickly when you add another consecutive step/obstacle !!
''Running issues''.....
Me neither , it was a question originally posed by someone (dubious source) else and I thought I was 'missing something' in as far as the engine/carburation was concerned...I wasn't.
Your confusion in your reply duplicates my thoughts on the question, please ignore it.

I once stripped a 10 year old Montesa 242 and it had zero wear'n'tear on the internals yet I stripped a 280 gasser that was only a year old and it was 5hagged....it had done the Scott ,IOM , SSDT and a couple of French 2/3 days though.
Also, can you further expand on these two points:
More oil= less coke?
and
What is the main factor for exhaust clogging?
Cheers,
Wayne

Is that because of the way you need to attack double steps (obstacles)? or some other 'running' issues?

I thought the 300s were a torquey version of the 250s (excluding the first 300 [2005?] which was a numb rock-spitter) up until the 2009/10/11 which then became a bit wild.
It's funny to hear some people say:-
''Wild?my 300? no,not mine.....but I did need to put a flywheel weight on,a longer exhaust,a slow throttle,extra base gaskets,head insert and change the gearing a bit

This reply could effect the answer this topic is looking for i.e how many world rounds/championships can he lose/throw away...not how many can he win before someone beats him?
On current form I can only see an injury or paradigm shift in his career path (e.g. change of motorsport for £ or the financial collapse of the WTC)from stopping him in the next 3 or 4 years.

Congratulations,and best wishes

Looks like the original beam frame/petrol tank has melted...yuk !

$millions worth of cars?..Where?
-
Err.. x2
I missed out the obvious.

That's a canny birra kit.....like.

You're kidding me?
How accurately spaced are your 10cc increments? 1mm/2mm apart?
Even taking into account your extreme ambient day-time temperatures over there, and the resulting lower viscosity, the meniscus of this treacle we're using must be about 1mm...throw in a hint of parallax error...and you're left with? ......a good guess.
Discuss.....

Baldilocks states 80cc per 5 L and Copey endorses 62cc per 5 L, I go for 75cc per 5L.
As long as it's fully synthetic I don't worry..at all
Besides, unless we're using a laboratory standard pippette, we couldn't be that sure how accurately we're pouring this 'syrup' anyway.
So it comes down to a tolerance of about + /-10cc,can you visualise that amount? (Nobody mention how the rock band got their name )
-
I) (62:1) 5000cc(petrol) divided by 62 = 80.64cc (oil)
II) (80:1) 5000cc petrol divided by 80 = 62.5cc (oil)
I Fink?

Hi Uhoh7,
Sorry I've got no remedy for you.
I had the same sort of problem on my 280 2001,changed rings, little end etc but it was a no go and I had to sell it like that.
Love that FJ  you've got,a serious bit of kit, when I go on holiday I'm all over the nearest FJ owner as if they were my new best friend ....Toyota should find a diesel lump to fit and flog them over here.

Are any of you road bikers out there this cool-headed?

Do not 'brim' the coolant up to the spout, the radiator needs an expansion gap at the top of the matrix.
The coolant should fill the rad up to and level with the top of the fins in the matrix... and no more (you will need a torch) .If it is overfilled then it should find it's own level by expelling the extra once it heats up.
I'm a bit concerned about your post when you say that it was much worse after expelling and cooling?

I'm trying to link these subjects together here:
In the past,I have tried 4 or 5 280 Gassers (2004/2005/2006/2010?) when I was in the market for a new bike and they were all too 'snatchy' when compared to a 250 or a 300 even!
They rev up very quickly just above idle and deliver very dramatic power (which is tiring) .
I have seen ,first hand, a rider of the same ability/age as me (Mr. average) trying to calm a 280 Pro when he moved on from a 250...to no avail. Only drastically changing the sprockets helped but left undesired engine characteristics.
There always appears to be more 280s on the second hand market than 250s and the 280s seem to be lower in price (market forces at work?).
Anyhow...this is the question I have always pondered:-
Has anyone tried a smaller diameter carb on a 280 to slow the incoming air volume at wider throttle openings?i.e a 24mm instead of the 26 or 28mm standard carbs?

Man,you've gotta love that sort of optimism

I suppose you're right....you only have to lift your foot to play 'dodge the torpedo' in the shower..

Swing a leg over a few different steeds, that will narrow it down a bit for you, after all they do ride differently with regards to your body size and riding preference.
There's an ex-TC member who was/is Beta mad and he mentioned that not all Rev 3 stators and rear shocks can be re-built ,you needed to buy a 'gen' only replacement ££...I think?
Bearing in mind how low the actual mileages' are for our trials bikes, they are not very reliable in the scheme of things.
The motocross or road biking world not stand (pun? ) for the sort of faults that we tolerate.
Here's the relative list that I think you're pushing for?:
(Remember that for every one bike with one of these faults there are a dozen(?) or so owners who say ''that's BS, it's never failed/happened on my bike''.
Gasser Pros (early):
Swing arm breakages, airbox leaks, middle box attachment and loose baffles, fuel tanks crack, gearbox frailties.
Shercos;
Swishy main bearings, stator failures, frame cracks at headstock, rear shock failures, silencer can't be serviced ....easily.
Betas :
Stator/electrical failures,leaking carbs/rear shocks, crankcase internal corrosion.
Montesa (315);
Dragging clutch,carburation/knock issues.
Scorpa
Chain guides made of cheese, steering stem cracks,TYZ engine (robust but) costly spares (availability?) non re-packable exhaust and the very worst thing of all..their owners , I reckon they don't believe in getting out of the bath to go to the toilet.
There we go,as Mel Brookes once said: 'There's something in there to offend everyone'.
I'll get me coat

I was thinking the exact same thing but I have nothing to back up that thought apart from pure supposition...
1) Honda 'dip their toe' in and out of World trials motorsport as they see fit..and they're due an 'out'.
So, no more big money rides on big money factory exotica
2) With the current global financial down-turn the WTC circus would probably shrink down to what are effectively cottage industry teams.
What would King Toni do?
-
Frames cracked on the 2006,up near the headstock...and rear shocks failed on 2006 as well
