It isn't that simple otherwise the Montesa 4RT wouldn't sell. It's reliable but heavier (thus a little less overall performance) and more expensive than most bikes and still it is loved and bought by many club riders.

I rode the 4 day trial for modern bikes there last year, very good organized and a beautiful area to ride.

Are you sure all the bearing lock nuts are in the correct position? And maybe the fork tubes come out of an other (later) model that have a bottom yoke that bends downward towards the bottom fork tube clamping.

That may be partially true, but when things get bad, when failing is almost inevitable, it's often the governments who they turn to for financial support. I think some Trial manufacturers in the 80's, were taken over by the government because otherwise they had to close. In the 80's there was a economical crisis all over Europe, so customers didn't have to much money to spend on an relative expensive hobby like trials, I think thats one of the main reasons why they failed. Governments do contribute (inderect) to the G.N.P. by providing work for private company's, for instance road works etc. And there may be to much regulations but they are there because some company's had terrible work conditions for instance, Just look at the bank crisis: Who gave their employees astronomical bonusses and who invested in crappy stocks? And who did they turn to when they were up **** creek? And in Belgium, lots of MX circuits, for instance one where we held a couple of trials each year, had to close, just because neighbours kept complaining about too much noise, they took there complaints to court and now its closed. This had nothing to do with the government.

Don't ride with a damage like that, you're gonna make it worse, maybe damage other parts of the fork, wheel, brake disc or something else...

What brings a bit more weight and is of benifit to us? - Thicker/longer bash plates (are very popular) - thicker/stronger dog bones - stronger engine mounts - frame pipes that have a thicker wall section so the welds are stronger - and many other things I've mentioned in a previous post such as stronger kick starter mechanism on some brands. But strangely enough nobody had any comment on that statement. I'm not saying bikes have to weigh 5 or 10 kgs more but a little bit more wouldn't hurt us. Just ask the guys who have to buy second hand bikes and who get stuck with frames that are cracked and so on... And of course there will always be bikes that had a very hard life that get damaged no matter how strong you make them, but these are the exceptions that cannot be avoided.

I think the myth is exaggerated . I've ridden up muddy climbs where others got stuck or only made it half way. It could have been my lucky day or my technique was spot on for once. Anyway, as usual the bike isn't the largest deciding factor, the rider is. I use Shell V-Power or alkylate fuel to avoid the crap in normal fuel and to minimise water in the fuel due to ethanol in these fuels. Try the search function for more info on fuels and the maintenance and cleaning of the fuel system.

Why would you machine holes when it's possible to laser them? And none of the sprockets i have, have a tapered edge or are even deburred at the holes, a laser cutter leaves a scharp edge but it's not so sharp that it would cut your skin easely, (although it would be better when they did have a chamfer for safety reasons) But nuff said, if you think it's cheaper so be it.
