  1. Funny that was the first post. First thing is not to loose the small washer on the kick start shaft. You do not need to drain the radiator fluid. Just fold the whole case over to the right and tie it to the exhaust. You are looking for the kick start pawl (elephant ear to be locked up jammed or broke. Also the idler gear under the clutch could be bad, The original clutch spring bolts would strip the allen heads just breathing on them. A good wack with a chisel is the best way to loosen them. Good luck. Takes 15 minutes to do this. The hard part would be a gasket for the `02. It was different from all other years as a lot of other parts.
  2. Are you riding trails or trials? Most trials bikes can be bottomed out easily, but an `84 is pretty old and though that is not the original shock.
  3. You should have a 145 main and a 27.5 pilot.
  4. So did Beta UK say they do not have a rebuild kit.
  5. Well was it in or outside? If it has been months since you started it, not so much it ingested it as it just stayed humid enough to rust. I had a friend wash his bike at a National in Washington state and the next week when he started it, the mains just screamed. The bike was two months old and Aprilia was it`s name.
  6. It could be the kick start shaft bound up. But the rocking back and forth should have loosened it up. I would try again the rocking, then remove the clutch side first to look for problems. Also did you wash the bikes afterward and not start them? The main bearings can rust up pretty quick that way.
  7. I`d try the new Dunlop GP. I`ve used the old Dunlop`s for years. (But I ride large grippy rocks!) Team Sherco USA started using the new Dunlops this year with good results. Best deal I`ve found is here. https://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/
  8. With the clip in that position you are as rich as the jetting allows. I would try a larger main and drop the needle back down. Some bikes just require more fuel than others.
  9. I would put in a 38 pilot. So is the clip in the top notch or bottom notch. Ideally the clip should be in the middle range, so you have some adjustment if conditions change.
  10. Glad I never came across the fool that uses Loctite. I have done hundreds of forks through the years and never used the so called special tools. The one that gets me is the gorilla that over tightens the fork cap. Which I usually put on hand tight. That way I know if someone else has been into the fork leg since I worked on it.

    Bar Risers

So, what class of vintage do you wild bar risers ride. 4 line, 3 line, 2 line, I doubt the one line. We actually have a Master line in our ITSA club now. I love my risers, NOT.
  12. Use a telephone to call your nearest dealer.
  13. Air tools have been affordable for the home mechanic for several decades. My 60 gallon air compressor has been one of the best buys I ever made.
  14. In the last year our club had one 2014 Montesa , one 2015 Montesa and I know of one 2016 on order. The 2014 Montesa was the first official Honda trials bike for sale in the USA since 1976. The poll might be wrong!

PS The original frame was chrome. Powder coating?

The `94 model had the gold triple clamps with the Paoili forks. Back then the 160`s were usually a year behind the big bikes as far as most parts. Very mellow little bike.
  17. You might go up one main jet size once you know what it is. 38 or 40 pilot.
  18. Actually removing the tubes and really cleaning the seals is the best way. But most people think this is so hard they just replace the parts while they are in there!

    Bar Risers

Yeah, if I went back I would be selling fat pegs. Man those skinny pegs were terrible. And if you have not been on a ty mono in awhile, it`s how tall the foot pegs are that`s was the problem. Trials bikes were obsessed with ground clearance so the foot peg height was the real killer.

    Bar Risers

Sort of. Every bike has the foot pegs lowered and moved back for a central or more neutral of center of gravity. In `86 our bikes actually turned and lifted quite well for the times. If you actually know a talented rider. Have him ride a stock newer bike and one with these crazy risers. Ask him to hop a couple of 360 turns, back and forth. Issue solved. Show me one world round rider, (Or local Champion) with more than 20mm risers. A few might have a little bit, but most have none. By the way we are talking human leverage points.

We loved it! Pouring rain in New Mexico during an event! I grinned all day long!

    Bar Risers

This is an example of me in 1986 on a `86 ty. With risers I would not have made this rock.

That is my little 17 year old. He is 6` 4 inches and growing. He would laugh at the risers. The ty front forks were a great upgrade, that you ruin with risers. But if you have to use them for some medical condition, then riding is way better than watching. By the way I really enjoy vintage trials, but on the hard side.

No, raising the bars compared to the foot pegs you loose leverage to control the bike. Ever wonder why you never see the good riders with silly risers. You lose a lot of response from the bars. Trials is about the ability to control through body movements. Not for a comfortable cruise on your street bike.
  25. While the front forks were loose, did you bounce it up and down? The pinch bolts can be just snugged up. Nothing worse than those being over tightened/stripped out.
