  1. Here you go; http://www.jonsnell.co.uk/images/tuning_and_using_amal_mk1_concentric_carburetters_.pdf
  2. Hope to be there with the two Steve's this year. Thankfully this year the SWCTA Dartmoor Two Day does not clash so I'm aiming to do that as well. What with the Somerton Two day British bike trial, the Stratford Sam Cooper and the Golden Valley Eurocup there are some excellent events to look forward to,long may it continue !
  3. I've seen Pete Kirby clutches withstand massive abuse on sidecar outfits on the Miller rounds,so I have no doubt they are tough, but are they all belt drive or does he do chain as well ? The clutch on my C15 slips in higher gears, but I've only ridden one trial on it so far and not had time to rip it to bits and see whats what. Not bothered by having a featherlight clutch as I don't use it much, just want something reliable. Will I have to empty some jam jars of old pound coins...

    Venhill Cables

They do two types, one for front brake/ clutch, plus a thinner one for throttle, valve lifter or advance/ retard. I try to keep them in stock all the time, you can make the cables to the exact length you want to follow whatever route you want. They work well.I also use a mini blow torch to solder the ends on as I can see when the solder has flowed properly through the nipple.I know most folk use a solder pot,and recommend it,but the torch works for me.

    Venhill Cables

Yep, they are bloody good - I make all my cables from these, get them from BVM.
  6. I rarely clean my bikes,so cheers for answering my question !
  7. Having replaced that loop on a 250 Majesty I can only say you aren't going to lose much weight. Not all of them had it removed,I don't think its a particularly good idea. Be interesting to weigh the mud that sticks to a bike during a wet trial,I've even sprayed the underside of the mudguards with non stick spray which worked quite well. If you are as old and lardy as me its probably better to lose weight yourself than trim stuff off the bike...
  8. They do put on a good event, I'm looking forward to the 2 day British bike trial on the 10th and 11th of June - always an excellent weekend. I couldn't make it to Weatherhayes,I'd promised to do other things,or I'd have been there on the BSA C15 !
  9. You want to try riding a road based trial like the Golden Valley March Hare on thin trials gloves when its minus whatever and pi--ing down with rain or snow.Road gauntlets are the answer over trials gloves for the road bits, then they come off for sections along with the thin gloves if your blood is going around...
  10. As soon as its warm enough that I can feel my fingers the gloves come off,I don't get blisters and hate wearing gloves. Gauntlets for the road bits then off they come !
  11. Exactly, had a brand new 241 Clubman - the mono with drums in 1987. Brakes were fine when dry, rubbish in the wet... Big end went on that after 18 months.Have never had any luck with new bikes, bought a well abused Yam TY250R after that - couldn't break it !
  12. Yep, I had a new TLR250 in Feb 86,that had very good brakes, pretty good when wet too. Shame the engine fell apart after 22 trials...
  13. Yes, that was my bike. You should have no problem in retaining the original number as its quite clear in the original registration records as you can see in the picture.I didn't get any farther than taking this photo as I had/have too many other projects on the go...
  14. Mick Andrews knew what he was doing, and Yamaha built them... Still more than capable with a decent rider on them. And so easy to live with, mine is a pile of scrap, built out of junk from Ebay. The engine is made out of 3 or 4 boxes of bits, only bought a base gasket and a set of rings. My kids go off playing on it whenever they want.I use it for fun or searching for dead trees to cut.(Firewood, our woodburner is our only heat source) Oil the chain and add fuel - isn't that what they say about modern bikes ? (I guess this is the same without depreciation)
  15. Took me years to get used to using my right hand to greet people, isn't it an insult in some cultures to greet with your left hand ?
  16. So, if the rider winds it on,throttle sticks, bike loops, rider bails out, lanyard cuts ignition, bike is still screaming... Trials is as safe as the sections and the common sense of the rider - if you don't like the look of it take a 5 and move on. No matter what you think you can prepare for there will always be something to go wrong. Stay in front of the telly if it bothers you. I like the summer trials where I can ride in a tee shirt, nearly always ride without gloves in the sections unless its minus ten.
  17. Lanyard is not always the answer,I remember a Fantic screaming its brains out till it seized back in about 1986. The killswitch made no difference,it was running on hot carbon after a big off with the throttle dug in the ground, which was then found to be jammed open anyway. Didn't take long to stop...
  18. Anyone else remember back in the 80's there always seemed to be at least one or two 350 CCM's for sale at the back of TMX ? They were always £750 or £800, should have bought a few...
  19. I have a new Holtworks tank for my HT, when I get around to building it.They are a work of art,had one for my Majesty aswell. I've looked at the Weedy ones at various times, they are a bit "functional" in comparison, but clearly up to the job. Both are cheap if you are used to charging out workshop hours and have gone to the trouble of making an alloy tank.I made one for the Ty175 that I fitted the XT225 engine into, took hours and hours...

  21. Hi, welcome to the forum, most of us are using Rickman type hubs using BSA Bantam/Tiger Cub shoes. Other suppliers are Alan Whitton and Gerry Minshall, easy enough to find if you want thier products. As for your gearing,we have recently discussed this, the general thought is that first gear needs to be around 25 - 1 from crankshaft to rear wheel. What can be difficult is to have a good spread of ratio's for trials sections, often road clusters have a large gap to second gear when the gearing is set for the base 25 -1 first gear. It depends on what gearbox you have or can get,if you can get hold of a Burman GB then you are in luck as Tricky Micky on her can supply you with some gears to give you a set of ratio's which will be spot on for trials use.If you have an AMC box it could be more difficult. The engines can be made to run like never before with the new Amal Concentric Premier carbs - with a couple of small mods, and also last well - unlike the originals. Sparks can be made more accurate and reliable with a new BTH electronic Mag.It all depends how far you want to go. With your B25,you need look no further than Charlie Prescott on here and his excellent BSA Otter website. Meanwhile, here is a pic of my old banger...
  22. Been OK today, nothing special, had a Saharan dust storm last night - everything is covered in red dust. Great day on the bikes yesterday, warm and sunshine all day, 160miles, which I think half of it was off tarmac. Monkey Butt by the time we got home !
  23. We did an 80 mile loop in the hills north of Fuseta and across towards the Spanish border, the tracks seem to go everywhere, many are signposted as proper roads and show up on the satnav. Today we are heading west to visit the "Impossible" hooking up with a mate of my brothers who is a Norwegian ex trials rider, has a Beamish Suzuki which was apparently sold new here. I still think its strange there are no trials here as my brother reckons there are loads of small village moto clubs, so I would have thought there would have been at least some trials fans. All I can say if there isn't is that they are missing out badly !
  24. I wonder why there are no trials clubs in the Algarve region. I've been trail riding here for the last few days, its wonderful countryside, endless oppertunities. All the locals smile and wave as you ride past. I can't imagine it would be too hard to find a landowner willing to host an event.
