  1. Be a good idea to get hold of a copy of the Rupert Ratio engine manual, everything you need to know is in there. http://www.ratiopublishing.co.uk/
  2. The Arbuthnot is often 80 miles +, but only 15 sections, I'd like less miles, more sections. (Not too comfy on a rigid AJS...) But its a lovely part of the world, there are always great bikes too see and like minded nutters to chat / take the p%%s etc.
  3. I Tig welded a hole in the crown of a piston that was made by a valve trying to escape. Apparently the engine ran fine afterwards, but it was a Rover K series. I think if it is measured after the weld and its not distorted it should be fine. Rod choice for the filler metal should be a big consideration.
  4. I think the confusion is that the top gear ratio as said locks the clutch to the front sprocket - 1-1. In the charts the top gear ratio has to be used to calculate 1st,2nd,and 3rd overall ratios as they all drive through the layshaft back up to the sleeve gear. So what we need is the smallest teeth count on the layshaft going to the largest tooth count on the sleeve gear. That way the gap separating the intermediate gears from top gear is biggest. The early distributor type engines have a better choice,as the trials sleeve has more teeth than the WD B40 type. I always ask Rupert Ratio for the info,he is a walking BSA info system !
  5. I can't be bothered with "Thread" politics, but one thing I would say is that those bolt on footrest kits are not very strong.I had something very similar or maybe identical from SM products on my TY250, they bend very easily. I ended up welding a thick gusset down the front face of them.
  6. Ok, home again and just getting my C15 ready to ride tomorrow. Its running a 520 chain with 13 teeth on the gearbox and 48 on the rear wheel. WD B40 cluster and standard C15 engine sprocket and clutch basket. That combo works fine for closed events, but would be cruel for any distance on the road.
  7. I think you also need to take into account of what internal gearbox ratio's you are using. My C15 needed a different rear sprocket after fitting the B40 GB cluster in it.I'm away on holiday till next week,so can't tell you what I'm using. The only thing I would say is that although its a wide ratio GB cluster, first is fine, just where I need it,so is second. Bit of a gap to third, but top is bloody useless on the road.Much over 24mph is horrible, so I wouldn't want to use it for a road trial. For that I'm going to build another engine based on an early distributor type engine with the original trials ratios, giving the biggest jump from third to top you can get - Info from the main man Rupert Ratio.
  8. Don't worry about it,just wait till you are at a trial where one of their members are and give them a bit of paper with all the details on it. They are a good bunch.
  9. That's certainly not the case with West country Pre65 / Twinshock trials, you couldn't wish for a better bunch to have a laugh with. We rode the Bath Classic trial yesterday and my score was awful, simply because we were spending so much time ribbing each other we didn't concentrate on riding the sections properly. Brilliant day out !
  10. I would also say LDT's, I did the Moor to Sea recently on my little rigid James, according to my GPS speedo I did 88 miles and was riding for nearly 10 hours.Brilliant day out and lovely scenery. But you do need a reliable bike like my little James...
  11. If you can just fill it with fuel, oil the chain and ride it this weekend, its a good price. If you make up a list of parts you need to build a bike how you want it,the price can be a bit of a shock. And you still have to build it - And shake it down.Very time consuming, rewarding if that's what you want to do. I'm part way through building a B44 engined B40WD as a trail bike. Two years in and about £4k and its still far from finished.Should be a cracking bike, but I rather wish I had just bought a running B44 Victor...
  12. If you seal it up you need to fit a breather tube from another drilling, otherwise the whole area in there will suffer condensation then corrosion. Totally agree about the 4spd bantam box, they are crap to build and use. A well built C15 gearbox is in a different universe !
  13. I'm very cruel to mine, they are sat in front of me right now having been steam cleaned last night, dried in the sun and wind today. A good coating of Duckwax will go on them and they can sit in front of the woodburner for a couple of days. Considering how badly I treat them they have lasted well,I'll buy another pair the same and abuse them too.?
  14. Cheers Dave, thought you would be on the case. I seem to remember there was another round somewhere in Wales, can't remember which club it was or when. I'll give Tim another call next week.
  15. Terry Weedy Stainless ones work best for me.

  17. There is an easy answer to this, you wear the number plate on your back.
  18. Aspen fuel is sold in plastic cans, has a 5 year shelf life. As for the oil question,my standard response is - "Oil is better than no oil"
  19. I'd just flog the Cub engine and get a C15 motor instead, much better.
  20. Not sure that it has a name ! There is no website as far as I know, also nothing on the ACU website. It is definitely happening though as I had a quick chat to Tim Fairbrother yesterday from the South Birmingham club. They run the Greensmith's trial which will be one of the events in the series. Maybe Woody has more info ?
  21. Anyone planning on riding the new series starting with the Golden Valley Cotswold Cups this year ? A worthy replacement for the Miller rounds, I'm really looking forward to it,a decent set of classes and some excellent, well established trials such as the Sam Cooper and the Greensmiths. A set of road based trials where old bikes can have a day out.
  22. Paul at Cotton Villiers supplied this conversion for my little J9 James, easy and obvious how it all fits and works a treat.

    Footpeg Location

I don't think Mick is 5'10, more like 5'8 from my memory and this pic, I'm next to him and 5'7. Last time I saw him he joked about the footrests on TY Yams. He said they were so high because Japanese riders are so short.?
  24. Does it really matter ? Me and my mates ride old British cr$p of varying condition/spec/quality. We have a bloody good laugh, plenty of mickey taking and go home. Makes the weekend worth looking forward to, yes we are competitive, but none of it is a world championship. At least we ride the bikes, trick or not.
