    2000 Rev 3

Is there anything inherantly good or bad with this bike? Looking at one in good order but haven't had a ride on one. I would be comparing it to a '98 Montesa as far a suspension, power delivery and traction.

    Tl Fork Seals

I am checking Saturday but riding Sunday. If I get the TL going I am going to try it on the intermediate line. Not that I am that good but it should be fun. Who knows, it might do better than I think. I won't have to worry about gear selection at least, just leave it in first all day and sit down between sections!

    Tl Fork Seals

yea, I saw that. Looks like mine started out as the adjustables and at some point in time somebody changed the caps. The bolt definately has to come out on mine. I am going to get a socket with a 6mm allen on it because it ain't comming out by hand. If I can get it sorted out, in my spare time (yea right), I might ride it this weekend at Clarksville.

    Tl Fork Seals

I have a '74 TL125 and am trying to replace the fork seals. They are the non- adjustable type forks. The book dosn't say anything about removing the bolt in the bottom of the fork leg to remove the fork halves but I can't get them to pull apart. I have removed the clip in the top already. Do I have to remove the bottom bolt too? Does the bolt hold the dampening rod?

    'boost Box'

Here is an article from the late 80's on how they work . Installed on a TY350. http://www.bjracing.com/aug88.htm

    Shifter Adjustment

Thanks for the picture Kevin. Made me a pair last week and worked perfect.
  7. Anybody else done anything to the 125 yet? Bob's is nice. Have a go on it if you run into him, you will be all smiles.

    Gas War

Last time we got tired of how the UK taxed things we BURNED THE SHIP. How can anybody make it on the other 20 %. Strange how things just happen over the years but it's kind of like the weather, everybody complaines about it but nobody can do anything about it. I guess it's been like that along time in England. Still, I would like to get over there someday just to check out some of the bike shops and stuff. I love to read the Classic Bike magazine and read about all the old stuff. I guess the gas price is why there are so many bikes in England.

    Gas War

I'm sure that the price per barrel of crude out of the Middle East is close to the same for England and the USA. The Arabs don't care who buys it. Where is all the extra money generated per gallon ( or liter) going? Somebody is getting it! Ya'll must have high taxes over in England. Then again, so do we.

    Shifter Adjustment

I've been running the Motul two stroke gear oil for about two years. I did adjust the clutch about two weeks ago when I replaced the clutch cable. I guess I will go on and pull the clutch out so I can adjust the shifter and check the clutch plates while I am at it. It might be that it is in need of replacement. Should I get a clutch holder tool to remove the clutch basket or is it really necessary? Sounds like a good question for Charlie Chitlins. This "over the winter" rebuild is sure dragging on but this is the last thing left.

    Shifter Adjustment

I got the cover off last night and couldn't seem to get it much better. Do I have to pull the clutch basket off to adjust it proberly or can I just go in increments and see what happens? The adjustment screw seems to be a cam or something and as the plate moves left at a point it stops and then starts moving back right. I don't really know what I'm looking for while adjusting. The book says to adjust until the forks are equal distant at the shift drum but like I said, I must have to pull the clutch basket. Any help?
  12. Down at a recent trials in Hattisburg, MS the guy had a huge log section. He had notched the ends and stacked them like a log cabin. He had one part that was four or five tiers tall and the champs and experts were hitting it hard. Nothing ever moved. He had notched the logs with a chain saw. I guess you could get out your old Boy Scout book and review the rope lashing part for a little security but the logs in MS were not lashed.
  13. Been having a little trouble shifting into first gear on my '74 TY250. Seems that I have to push down hard on the shifter to get it into first gear. It upshifts OK, not great, but it's the down shifting back into first that is the big problem. I noticed in the manual that there is an adjustment set screw on the clutch side where the shift shaft comes through the case and operates a little cog that aparently moves the shift forks. It didn't really tell what it adjusted or how to do it. Does this adjust the way the shift forks engage or the shift drum or something? Could my shifting problems be as simple as this needing adjustment? Any help appreciated. The gears don't grind and there is no clunking around in the cases like something is broken, it just seems that the shift fork that engages first gear is not moving enough for positive engagement.
  14. I had a go on Bob Ginder's new comp model 4 stroke last week at B&J. Bob already had the 143cc kit on his and some exhaust mods done. My only four stroke experience has been with my own bone stock '74 TL125. What a difference!! I was really impressed with how easy it was to lift the front end around. No hesitation at all. I also noticed how smooth the power came on, nothing like my '98 TXT270. The bike pulled steady in second gear and the smooth power delivery really makes the bike hook up. The components and build quality are A+ and the rear fender looks much better in person than photos. I think for my level of riding, it has to be the perfect bike. Never noticed the cable clutch, it worked great and I didn't use it that much. I was also impressed with how light and narrow the bike felt. Bob said he weighed the motor out of the bike and it weighed 53 lbs. For any doubters out there, first place in the Expert class at this weekends trials in Hattisburg, MS was won by Dustin on a four stroke Scorpa. Best of all, it just sounds cool!!!!!!!!
  15. Got a fresh bore, 1st over, and piston for the TY and was wondering what the best way to break it in will be. I want to do it right so I won't have to mess with it for a long time. I have other bikes to work on, this bike is for riding!!

    Falcon Shocks

If your in the USA call Bob Ginder at B&J, he can fix you up. http://www.bjracing.com/
  17. I'd like to figure out how to get a pair of those on my '74 TY250. I had a '98 Gas Gas and they look like the same pegs.

    Standard Rings

Actually, it was the bottom ring that broke Bob. I went on and called B&J to check and decided to just get a fresh top end. I'm shipping off the jug tomorrow for a new bore and piston. Thanks for taking the time to check for me though. I guess it's still winter in Canada. Been over 60 degrees the last two days here. Actually had the a/c on Sunday but it's just not right running the a/c in February. Stay warm up there.

    Standard Rings

I need a set of rings for a standard bore '74 TY250. The rings are obselete at Yamaha. Anybody know of a part number for some rings that will work and are available?

    Help !

Finally got it off. Been on since '74. It ended up being one of those things you just need to walk away from for a while and come back to it later.

    Help !

Trying to get the cylinder head off my TY250. I have beat on it with a rubber mallet and gently pryed on it with a pry bar but it won't budge. Any advise on how to get it loose?
  22. My friend has a 88 or 89, I forget, 240 climber and I worked on it recently for him. His has the upside down forks and I replaced seals for him. The forks used different weight oil, one side was 7 wt and the other 20 wt. I contacted Mike Komer and he had all the information I needed and was very helpful. I got the seals and some other parts from him. I understand he used to be the US importer for Aprilia and still has parts. Here is a link to his page: http://www.tryalsshop.com/
  23. As far as the autolube goes, I would can it and run premix. Mine worked fine but I decided to take it off so I would never run the risk of it NOT working. I now run mine 50:1 and it runs great. All you need is a small oval plate to cover the hole where the autolube drive gear went. As far as the carburator, get a Mikuni.
  24. I think this is the same guy that had a '76 TL250 "in his collection" and sold recently on e-bay. Same deal, 25-30 miles, always inside, one minor scratch, ect. That bike had a buy now price of $4500.00!!! What a beautiful bike though.
  25. I got mine in October '03. It's a '74 TL125, does that count?
