    Flywheel Weight

The very early red/white SWM used a smaller flywheel that the yellow models.....Sammy Miller used to list a bolt on flywheel weight in his catalogue many moons ago. While in the flywheel area.......one of my talented SWM contacts has converted his bike to electronic ignition, with some very good results. It is utilising a kit thats already available on the market, and I have one winging its way to me shortly, to see if its as easy to install as he makes out..and whether the improvement is significant enough to warrant the money. Will let you know the findings soon. Martin
  8. Did you know that if you text "Seeley" into your mobile with predictive text on......it comes up as "Reflex"...how weird is that !!!!!
  9. Check the float needle valve ......the bit that shuts off the petrol supply when the floats go up. On the Dellorto, the float needles have a rubber tip, make sure its not split or fallen off. This would explain why the bike starts and runs OK when you switch the fuel off, as you are stopping the constant flow of petrol into the carb. Cheers Martin
  10. Found this over on the MXtrax motocross forum HRC twinshock So....is it a genuine HRC twinshock or is it an interesting special based around an RTL mono ?? Martin
  11. For a Bultaco, dont bother...its quicker to buy a new tank from BultacoUK than mess around trying to paint one. The problem is that the paint will bubble and fall off after a while, this is due to petrol fumes travelling through the now pourous tank. Sealling the inside is the answer, but most tank sealents available are designed for metal tanks, and dont work on plastic. This subject has been covered a lot on one of the MX forums, there is a guy there that reckons he can paint them successfully, but the price is about the same as buying a new tank. 12. Charlie A suggestion for you for next year.....why not include twinshocks. Think it would double your riders, spectators and trade stands. Regards Martin

    320tl Kickstart

As draining the oil via the 17mm hex head kickstart bolt seems to be a regular problem with new SWM users, here is a step by step guide how to re-set the kickstart spring. I assume you have the clutch basket off, so..... 1. Make sure the spring end is located into the hole in the crankcase and the hole in the side of the ratchet gear. 2. Grow a third arm or go and find a friend. 3.Best at this point to have the big 17mm hex head kickstart stop bolt either completely out or unscrewed until the last thread.....this is the bit you need a friend for. 4.Get a ring spanner big enough to fit over the kickstart shaft and compress the ratchet gear and spring down onto the splines on the kickstart shaft. 5. Keeping the spring compressed with the spanner, Stick the kickstart onto the splines and rotate 360 degress clockwise. 6. Get friend/third arm to screw in the 17mm bolt and slowly alow the ratchet stop to return to locate on the top of the bolt. 7. Dont test it out until you put the clutch back on as it will twang off across the floor ! 8. Remember how difficult this is and make sure you NEVER try and drain the oil via this bolt...
  14. Hi Ken Think you searched on the right site for info.....you entered the wrong engine number (149D not 049D) I have just searched your info and got 049D back as an 9E Heres a link Villers ID Cheers Martin
  15. Reckon it might be the low tension ignition coil on your stator plate. I have had exactly the same problem with a few SWM's recently (same points & condenser style ignition as Bultaco). Symptoms are, that the bike will run fine from cold and start first kick, by second or third lap of event, starting becomes difficult and performance is noticeably down, even had them stop altogether. We eventually traced this to the LT coil, which have broken down over the years, and as they get hot they expand and it weakens the spark. In all 3 cases, rewinding or replacing the coil sorted the problem. May be worth checking with Dave at Bultaco UK, as I would think he has had the same problem before.

    Removing The Barrel

OK Ross Try this as a last resort. Get a plastic storage box, place the motor in it with the barrell pointing down. Fill it up with diesel and leave to soak for 2/3 days. If that doesnt shift it, get your hacksaw out !!! Martin

    Removing The Barrel

Hi Ross I assume you have got the head off ok ?? If so get 2 cylinder head nuts screwed onto 1 stud, wind the nuts together with 2 spanners so they lock together and unscrew the stud by using the lower nut. I would be surprised if you break the studs...dont panic if you do, I have loads of them here if you need any replacements. Cheers Martin

    Swm Rebuild Manual ?

Copy of an engine manual here Cheers Martin
  20. Hi Chris Try this to get you started. 1. Before all else....double check your flywheel key, they have a habit if shearing, which will spin the flywheel on the shaft, throwing any timing out. 2. Make sure you have the stator plate in the correct position..points at the top, condenser at the bottom. 3. Set the plate so the bolts are in the middle of the adjusting slot. 4. Set points so that you see them slightly opening as you turn it over TDC. Do this while you have the plug out and resting on the head. 5. If you are getting a fat blue spark, stick the plug back in, and it should fire up. If no spark, open the points up fractionally, until you see a spark. If it runs OK, leave well alone...if not check the settings using the guages. If you are still getting problems, give me a call. Cheers Martin
