I would suggest moving the kick start lever back to the original vertical position. The moving of the lever more clockwise to give more purchase always ended in disaster as there is a stop built in to the kick start shaft which eventually punched a hole through the crankcase.

Try slicing an old inner tube into 1.5 inch wide bands and sliding them on before putting the boot on and then sliding it over the closed boot.
