  1. Big John, Glad my comments were taken in the spirit intended. My first bike was a model 80 back in 1977 when I was 14. So for me this is the model where my dream began. This was swopped in 1978 for a brand new model 198. As with most of us of a certain age the wish to own the bike or bikes of our youth seems to come together with some disposable income. Followed by a suitable search a model 80 is again residing in the garage. I have 6 Sherpa's (Model 10, 49, 80, 185, 198 & 199) and the Model 80 is the favorit next to the model 10. My model 80 is fitted with an original triangular silencer. This takes the bark of the exhaust but seems to sap some power as well as get in the way of your right boot. I would like to get hold of one of the small round aftermarket silencers that this triangular silencer was replaced with back in the day. Stuart
  2. Aha, model 80 250cc Sherpa! At long last I can correct Big John. Take a look again. Recessed swinging arm bolt, Aluminium dropped lower front yoke. Close fin cylinder barrel (250)....................................Model 91 It's now official I am a nurd. But Dave Renham has known this for years. Stuart
  3. Fiberglass tanks were not made illgal until the early 70's and this law was not made retrospective. So the sherpa fitted with the kit campion fiberglass tank or earlier has always been road legal in the UK. Bultaco did introduce the aluminium tank to get around this law and continued to supply aluminium tanks for the UK market long after introducing the plastic (polyprop?) tank for other markets. Stuart
  4. I Guess this is getting of topic so my appologies and again congratulations to Nick Ogden and The Chelmsford club for running a great event at a new venue. The Braintree club Turkey Trot trial does have a Twinshock class. Class winners will be awarded a Turkey given on the day with runners up a Christmas Pudding. Please note the confusion in the Eastern Center Gazette and this event is at Straits Mill, Bocking near Braintree and not Snaque pit. Lets hope I get the results correct this year as last year I made a mistake on the day and had to award another Turkey to the true A class winner Andy Burrell. Stuart Penfold
  5. Essex Rider. I appreciate your comments regarding the Beta still think it needs a bit of pink to make it go better. Make an effort to get the Bemish out and enter the Woodbridge club Tunstall forrest event on the 31st December. Last year about 60 pre 65 and 60 Twinshock entries. Nice big lap through the forest. Just the thing to blow away a few christmas cobwebs Stuart
  6. Essex Rider. Think it would look even better with a pink fluffy pad on the handlebars
  7. For me restoring has become a way of life. When I finish one I just have to get another. I always have a least one project on the go at any one time. Many years ago I restored a 600 Panther. Near the end of the restoration I sat down one evening and started to add up all the reciepts. About half way through I stoped adding. Threw all of them in the bin and have never kept a single reciept since. If we did it for money lets be honest it just would not stack up. For me the challenge is to take the most roughest basket case bike possible and turn it into a show winner. As for this to good to ride rubbish people keep spouting. Restore it the best you can and then get out and ride it. The second restoration is always far easier then the first. My latest 350 Sherpa will be finished in about 2 weeks and the Frontera by Christmas. After that the green sherpa is probably in for it's bi-annual major refurbishment. I have a model 49 Sherpa (1968) and a 78 Pursang lined up so no let up on the horizon yet. It's my 21st wedding anniversary on Monday. My secret for a long marriage. Never come out the garage! Well it seems to have worked for me. Stuart
  8. Glad to here you have got it sorted. Like you I was thinking in terms of having to strip the gearbox. I was quite impressed how easy it is to change. If I had to do it again I think I could probably do it in less than half an hour. Twinnshock
  9. What woodruf key ?? Are you talking about the the hat that the spring sits on under the clutch? There is a slot in the end of the hat that fits into the split on the shaft. That part is ok. Are you sure? My son with his 04 280 had a similar problem after hitting a rock. I inspected the top hat piece and was convinced it was fine but talking to Kev at GasGas UK on the phone he assured me that this part was the problem and he was right! In our case the bar across the top of the top hat piece was sheared but was still retained inside the body of the part so looked fine. I like you was all for stripping it all down but this was one phone call I am glad that I made. Why don't you give Kev a ring? Stuart
  10. Be carefull when buying a modern replica silencer. Some have been produced that are externally excellent but are nothing but an empty box inside. I have an original triangular silencer on my own model 80. It has a huge effect on the exhaust noise making the bike sound quite but flat. Only issue is that it is very close to the rear of my boot and gets bent backwards and inwards and then get's knocked by the swinging arm. I have to readjust it's position on a regular basis. Any body else experianced this problem? Stuart
  11. HOWEVER ( and i can only draw on my feeble memory as the regs have now been withdrawen from the SSDT website) I was of the understanding that bikes had to be of BRITISH MANUFACTURE to be qualified to enter ] The Scottish Pre 65 2 day event is not restricted to British bikes only as the intention of this event was to creat a feel of the SSDT pre 65 and foreign bikes were part of the scene pre65. It would be a shame if these so called foreign bikes (let's face it they are all foreign from a Scotish point of view)were not allowed as they add much flavor and interest to the trial. I am waiting for the day that sombody tries to ride the Scotish Pre 65 2 day on a Lambretta!
  12. My appologies for slightly off topic. Any chance of a photo of the M49? I am currently rebuilding a very early one. (Frame Number 49-000165) Stuart
  13. Did the Firestone have the original "Spanish" air still inside better suited to dry sandy conditions or had it been replaced with aftermarket "Yorkshire" variaty better on Rocks?

    Bult On Ebay

As per previous posts the 4 speed Model 10 sherpa's fetch a premium over all other models and the asking price is far from unrealistic from experiance. About two weeks ago a M10 sold on ebay. The bike was located in the UK was a non runner in complete need of restoration but appeared from photographs to have all the right parts and was very rusty/oxidised.It sold for
  15. Going to give it a go again this year. I live about 5 miles from the start so no excuses there. I just hope I can improve my finishing position from last year. The only riders I managed to beat were non-finishers! My excuse, I rode a 71 Sherpa and rode most of the event without brakes. As they say "A bad workman always blames his tools". Stuart
  16. Legs After reading this post for one moment I thought you might actually like "Bultaco's" Is the Fantic up for sale? Twinnshock
  17. Don't you own Vestys last bike Dabster? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I am not sure who actually owns it, but I understand that this bike is looked after/in the possession of Dave Renham Bultaco UK. I am a Bultaco enthusiast (for enthusiast read nutter) I must be, I own 7 of them but a Bultaco in a list of parts to make the perfect Twin shock. Now come on Dabster is this a case of love is blind? Stuart
  18. I prefer the road Trials. They seem more of an event against some of the 10 section 4 lap affairs we have around here, where it seems that we have to rush round as quick as possible in order to finish in time for the organisers to get to the pub in time for a lunchtime pint. A big advantage of a roadtrial is that they can use land that would otherwise be unusable. For example the spinney in the corner of a field that has about 3 sections and no suitable parking. In East Anglia we still have a lot of these odd bits of land. In these times of land loss this may be the way foward for the sport. Obviously the biggest disdadvantage is the need to have a road legal bike and in particular the insurance for younger riders. The ACU day insurance is not available for riders under 21. I do not see the lack of seats and small fuel tanks as a problem. After all how do all the riders get around the SSDT course, it's all part of the event. Again it is more work for the organisers with liasing with the police and local authorities but in my opinion the extra effort is well worth it. Stuart
  19. This will obviously open a can of worms as every owner has his own ideas but I use EP90 gear oil in the gearbox 600cc for a rebuilt engine as per book but for an oil change I put in 500cc. For the primary chaincase I still use Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) 300cc. Stuart
  20. Sorry to show my ignorance. What is a spline? I appreciate gear and kickstart shafts have splines to stop the bit at the end rotating but the splines on these parts are a feature not the whole part. Stuart
  21. I have also had a good look at the photo's on the web site. Not sure if this muffler is quite correct compared with some bike photo's I have seem so be very carefull. The small silencer I remmber fitting to my old M80 in the 70's was of steel construction about 2" diameter and about 5" long so was hardly noticeable on the bike but took the bark/edge of the exhaust note. Any body got one of these? Stuart
  22. I feal quite strongly on this issue and think we should not run events on this day. But I can see many people, younger riders in particular not understanding this viewpoint when all other activities seem to go on regardless. I am referring in particular to the Sunday pilgrimage to B&Q and IKEA. Stuart
  23. Have you tried http://trialclasico.com in spain. This site list the model 49 muffler that you are looking for. I have no experiance of these people so can not advice on quality etc. I have this style of second muffler(original)on my model 80 and I am thinking of taking it off. The muffler is not blocked but it definatly strangles the performance, engine not so quick reving and also digs in the back of my foot/ankle restricting foot movement.I remmber back in the 70's we all took these triangular boxes off and fitted small round after market silencers that took the bark of the exhaust note without resticting performance and also saved weight. Now if I could find a source of these small after market silencers I would definatly reach for the check book. Stuart
  24. I oftain request the number 13 when signing on. But then again if you see me ride you would appreciate it does not make a difference! I rode our club evening series this year with the number 13 at each round. I was awarded the over 40 championship but after a results protest was relegated to second spot by 1 point. so purhaps there is somthing in it. (I also live in a house number 13 with the front door etc. painted green.) Stuart
