Hi Just purchased a bike for rebuild and wondering if anyone can advise the following: 1. What psi should i get when the bike is kicked over? Im getting a max of around 75 psi on the gauge? 2. Kick start sometimes engages sometimes not any suggestions? 3. Also got no spark from the coil, ammeter giving 12000 secondary and about 1 -2 ohms primary? (Book says 6000 and 5-6 repectively?) 4. Have checked the wire to the coil and ammeter showing 1.5 ohms as per book, but when kicked over doesnt seem to emitting any charge? any ideas what this should be? Appreciate any advice please. pete

Just found this one. I have removed the seats and tank. The tank has lots of rust inside. Is there any way to save it, maybe a coating or something? Anyway its a long term project, my goal is to use this one for comp and keep my other one, which is 100% stock and original, as a looker.

Hi, I've been restoring a 1977 Yam Ty250. The forks are in really good condition apart from one which has 3 spots (quite deep) and the threads are about to give up on the legs where you bolt on the mudguard bracket. Fitted new seals and clips before riding it at the weekend and the seal has gone! My questions are although I can have them re-chromed are the forks off a mono (36mm) any better? Any advice? Im assuming I will also need to have the wheel, brakes and clamps to match? do these fit directly to an twinshock Yam. One thing I notice is that the spindle is not centrally located as on the twinshock, will this make a difference? Cheers

Hello Has anyone put a 24mm Flat Slide carb on a TY175? I'm thinking about putting one on but is it worth it? I've already done most of the mods you can do to a Stock Ty motor. Ie.. 200cc big bore kit and porting to the jug and Head. SM exhaust and a shorter head pipe. Alum. air box for better air flow. Better reeds and reed spacer plate. Some of the weight removed from flywheel. Don't get me wrong the motor runs great. And pulls like a freight train. I would just like it to pick up the revs a little faster. I have noticed a lack of compression and a fair bit of knocking from the top end of the engine and this morning removed the head and cylinder barrel for inspection. The bore measures 67.98mm and the piston 67.73. I measured this with a digital caliper. I could only get an accurate measure of the bottom part of the bore as there seems to be a part of the top of the bore not touched by the piston. This impedes the prongs of the caliper from finding a accurate measurement. The piston and bore look to be in good order, apart from the gap of aprox 0.20 between piston and bore. Good evening gents I am just resolving a few minor issue's with my TY250 twin shock that I have been restoring over the past few months and I am in the lucky postion to have a spare bike albiet in bits sitting in the garage. I have been thinking about what to do with this bike as it needs a complete restoration and instead of restoring or breaking it I would like to do something differant and build something that is suitable for a bit of road work and green laning, so I am considering going along the lines of putting a four stroke engine into a ty250 Frame, Possibly a 400 cc single pherhaps a XT400 engine. Hey everyone, my dad owns a 74-76 (not sure of the year, blue and white paint) Yamaha TY250 an the sprockets are pretty shot. I've tried looking online for new ones that use the 428 chain, and haven't come up with anything. I did see a European site that stocks sprockets, but uses 520 chain. We recently had to put a new chain on the bike, but had to use a 420 and not a 428, which may or may no be a problem if I order the stock size sprockets. Basically, I was wondering if it would be better to order 520 sprockets and chain instead of using the 420 chain and looking for 428 sprockets. I had considered this project pretty much finished. She has had everything replaced from new carb to full engine rebuild. All cables etc, seals. There is basically hardly any original left. She was starting great and she had new points, condenser and coil. Points were set to 1.8mm btdc at 0.35mm. I have had a few runs on her and she was lugging me around, all 15 stone of me. She does have a new 60cc barrel kit as the 50cc was badly worn and scored. Just recently a friend came over and asked "does it run"? I promptly went to start it and that's when the trouble began. got my ty running great, only problem after about 2 hours use it starts missfiring then stops, no spark, change the plug and off it goes again no problem for about another 2 hours, iv got the mix right by the colour of the plug, its just had a rebore and crank seals, exhaust is a new wes system so not blocked, dont think any electrics are getting wet as the only wire to the coil is covered in silicon sealant so is the plug cap, anyone got any ideas!!!!!

hi, i have a ty 250, its been fitted with new clutch plates but when put in gear in morning it puls forward with the clutch in when warm theres no problems? The adjustment on lever is right out, so were do you adjust the clutch? Thanks,,

Just been giving my forks a go over as they felt a bit knackered, stripped them down to find the left fork bottom was binding real bad on the stanchion and after a few hours of poking at it with a bit of wet and dry on the end of a wooden curtain pole it looks like the things sliding nice and free now. Put it all back together and the suspension is now so much better. I noticed whilst playing around with the forks just how much rake there is in the yokes alone and was wondering if anybody has thought of a way to pull back the rake so that the stanchions are more parallel with the stem. It would appear I didn't post the successful rebuild of our TY80 engine after some problems discovered, so here it is: Just to recap, a year ago we acquired a TY80 that had a recent rebuild but suffered from a gear-change problem – up changes fine but down changes very unreliable. It also rattled more than I would have expected from a rebuilt engine… So easy job first and check the clutch mechanism and general condition under the LH case: All good, so take off the RH case and clutch to check the gear-change mechanism: Note the fantastic homemade clutch holding tool that came with the bike. I have a 1974 TY250 that I recently bought and before I started the bike I pulled the cylinder off.I found the piston which is standard bore was cracked.I bought a new piston 1st oversize and was going to replace the bearings on the crank.Is it a good idea to use the stock rod and replace the rod bearings or should I buy a new rod? Is there a way to tell if the low end is good or bad besides the obvious? Thanks for any help Mike

Had a problem with my sons TY175 today. Was running great 'till a very wet New Years day trial, where is developed a bit of a cough and splutter. Airbox was soaked when I took it apart, so cleaned the airbox, replaced the filter with a new one (probably needed a change anyway) and cleaned the carb. Nothing obvious in the carb. Next trial out was today, where is had a distinct 'bog' off the bottom when opening the throttle. Also after stopping was really difficult to start. The 'bog' was so bad that riding through a section, seemed ok but then on the uphill exit, it just died (almost like you had left the fuel tap off). Decided to call it a day, again difficult to sta…
