Hi TY Gurus I have a TY175 circa 1976 - mines great except knackered wheels (spokes missing, rims pitted, hubs look corroded, remaining spokes rusty). I have just acquired a TY250 also circa 1976. It's wheels are in brilliant condition - clean, straight and very recent new spokes Can I straight swap them so the good wheels are on the TY175? I cannot see any difference but thought I'd ask first? Even the hubs look identical? I'll probably swap the forks/yokes as well - I've read on here that the 250 forks are more suited to heavier riders (I'm over 100kg) - any advice appreciated. Are the rear shocks a straight swap as well? Anyone know standard length for TY175 and T…

Hello I wonder if anyone can shed any light on my latest (and hopefully last) TY problem. The front brake was very poor and had run out of adjustment - moving the brake arm around the splined shaft didn't work either. I've now fitted a new genuine Yamaha cable, new (quality) shoes and new lever/perch of the type designed to lighten the clutch. What i've ended up with is a brake that i can adjust to the point just before the shoes make contact with the drum, then as i squeeze the lever to the bars it feels increasingly spongey until fully home. At this point i can still push the bike forward without it locking the front wheel !! I did notice a bit of scoring inside th…

As anyone tried a DT cylinder on a TY175? I have an early DT jug and I'm thinking of using it. I did find that the exhust port is 2mm higher in the DT then the stock TY cylinder. And that the intake port is 3mm wider as well. Also the DT cylinder head also has a smaller compression chamber in it, but will need the fins cut down to work.

I've seen a lot of ty250s in my day but these are kind of interesting (mainly the silver one) Interesting points: 1. original owner said they were purchased new from the dealer in these paint jobs. 2. The silver one has a 23" front wheel w/ good fender clearance. 3. Again silver one has a strange swingarm w/ 2 shock mounting positions. 4. Frames are black 5. Skid plates are different one is welded aluminum, other is fiberglass 6. Funky air conversion is that on the fork Anybody have any thoughts on this stuff? Could any of this stuff be stock? Let me know what you think.

Hi all In July I had a piston failure and since have rebuilt the top and bottom end of the ty 250a. Now i feel the clutch is slipping when going down hills. The clutch does not slip at all under hard acceleration. I was using atf fluid after the rebuild and noticed a small amount of slipping going downhill so I switch to honda gear saver trans fluid. The clutch would slip on acceleration until it got really warmed up about an hour, so I went back to atf fluid and it only seems to slip going down hills. This doesnt make sense to me. Hopefully somebody can help me out before I tear back into the clutch. I have two more trials coming up soon . James

A few days ago I stumbled onto a post that had a great photo of an aftermarket set of wide pegs that had a built in pin for holding the peg up so the kick start would clear it. Tonight I have spent over an hour and a half trying to find that post so I could see what brand or source of those pegs were. Can any one please tell me what source of wide pegs for the TY175 has the little pin that holds the peg back? Thank you, Pat

Hi guys, TY is coming along, getting to the point of rebuilding. Zinc plating everything before paint is taking an age but hopefully worth it. Bit of a mistake by myself, the stainless spokes I ordered are wrong for the front. The rear laced up good, still need to true it up etc but I've had to re order new front spokes, had to compromise this time so there coming galvanised. I'll post up some pics of how she's looking so far. Back to to the main point though, I have searched for the inlet pipe between airbox and carb and I can't find one anywhere, does anyone know where this can be purchased or is there an alternative that fits or is it a case of make y…

I have a ty250a and a ty250c. I am wanting to tune them so the run identical if possible. The problem I have is the "A" has quick throttle response and is very "snappy". The "C" on the other hand seems slow on response and returning to idle or tickover speed. They both have comparable compression readings, same exhaust and silencers, same UNI pod air filters, same crankcase oil. switching the carbs does not change anything. The flywheels appear the same and I understand that the timing is not adjustable. It is possible that the "C" has a old school bigbore 300 kit in it as the heatshield was changed to "trials300" but I have yet to pull the head to confirm this. I ha…

Further to my first post, I have a 175 that was starting first kick with the choke on but then when you put the choke in it died. After some advise on here I stripped the carb and cleaned and checked all the jets etc, mixed new fuel 50:1 cleaned out the tank which was full of bits of fibre glass but a new fuel hose on. Put the carb back together and the bike started fist time without choke and ticket over nicely. But when I took the bike for a spin it seemed to bog down without much power as if it was choked, then it stopped and wouldnt re start. What I have done so far. Stripped the carb again. ( wont start and backfires) Took out the new fuel and put the old fuel b…

Hi I bought a TY80 some time back for my daughter who now has a renewed interest in having a go at some trials with me. It's a bit of a mess by all there. Anyhow I tried starting it a couple of times and no luck. Here is the current synopsis - carb rebuilt with new jets and gaskets - lifted the head, no problems there and fitted a new base gasket and annealed the head gasket. No movement on the crank - compression test shows 100psi - good spark, running an NGK B6 plug - petrol getting through as plug is oily - checked the reed valve and that seems to be seating alright. I'm thinking that it may possibly be the crank seals? Any opinions or how I could check. In the …

Does anyone have advice regarding torque specs for the TY-250A , 1974 bike? currently reassembling after adding electronic ignition would like to know the torque for the flywheel nut. also would like to know after finding TDC what is the optimal advance or retard of the timing. I will be using a strobe with advance degrees on it. Thanks for any help.

I have just bought a second hand Sammy Miller silencer and some Boyesen reeds for my otherwise standard TY175. Has anyone else fitted similar and what changes did you have to make (if any) to the carb settings? Were any jetting changes required? Carbs are a dark art to me and any help will be greatly appreciated. Hopefully I'll be able to understand it.

I have no manual and plan to take my forks apart, clean them and then install the new "Magical" fork springs and adjusters that I just received from France. Does anyone know what the original spec. is for the amount of, or level for, the forks on this bike? I'm assuming that the spec. for oil weight is10w30 or 10wt (I'm 130lbs so a light rider)? The springs and adjusters did not come with any info. so I'm assuming that I set the adjuster length so that the combination of the adjusters and the new springs match the length of stock springs? Thanks for your help.

mechanical maestros, if you could tolerate yet another question from the ignoramus..... i realized at 160lbs (72kg) i'm on the border between 40 and 50 lb springs. maybe i should have got 50 lbs as i ride mostly road here in NYC but i went with 40lbs on the new falcons as that's what the guy sent me from the UK. i know the 40lbs are perfect for trials use however now methinks maybe i need to set them on max pre load as they seem a tad soft. im used to the thread/tool adjuster and the original step adjuster type pre loads, but not sure what the procedure is for these cir-clips? no doubt its super easy and you're all laughing, but i don't want to damage them…

My son bought an old TY80 and needed to replace the fork seals. The bike is somewhere between a 1976 and 1982 model. To cut a long story short the fork seals are ancient and pretty much stuck in the forks. During our trying to get them out the top of the seal has come away and try as we might we cant get the bottom part of the seal out. My plan is now to take the forks completely apart in order to release the damaged seal. Do I need a fork damper tool and if so is there a specific one for this bike? If not, how do I take the forks apart. I saw there was a posting back in 2007 but it seemed untried on a TY80 and I dont want to cause any damage. Any help would be greatfully…

Here we go again? What are your thoughts about mounting a tubeless Dunlop 803GP T tire on the rear (tube type) (twinshock DID rim??) When I ordered it- the web page said it was "tube type" but when it arrived, the words "tubeless" were moulded into the sidewall rubber. Here is the link to the website: https://www.chapmoto.com/dunlop-d803gp-trials-rear-tire.html I have not tried to mount it yet, and I'm still well within the 30 day returns limit from the vendor. I have a 21" 803GPF mounted on the front and it says "tube type" and I had no problems with it- it has a tube in it and works just fine. Did Dunlop stop making the 803 series rear …

Good evening gents I am just resolving a few minor issue's with my TY250 twin shock that I have been restoring over the past few months and I am in the lucky postion to have a spare bike albiet in bits sitting in the garage. I have been thinking about what to do with this bike as it needs a complete restoration and instead of restoring or breaking it I would like to do something differant and build something that is suitable for a bit of road work and green laning, so I am considering going along the lines of putting a four stroke engine into a ty250 Frame, Possibly a 400 cc single pherhaps a XT400 engine. I do seem to recall reading about a French chap who has done so…
