Aircooled Monoshocks

G'day, Just got my restored TY running. It has a new Sammy Miller's alloy silencer, but it's running too loud for my liking. They advised that repacking (more packing) could be detrimental to performance. They make 'em so I guess they're right, but I imagine there's always another view. Anyone have any thoughts on this, or advice on how to quieten the exhaust overall. I burnt out all the carbon/crud from the pipe/middle section before re-installing, so that part of the equation should be fine. Is it worth getting the middle sectioin opened up and packed, or does this harm performance, too? Just thinking about all the options. Even considered that exhaust wrapping ta…

Given the value/ prices TLR 250 twinshocks have been achieving recently I was wondering what the rare mono RG model would be worth. The white one with blue and red stripe. Completeley different bike and quite rare. I have been offered one that requires a couple of small jobs sorting. Possibly more of a trail bike maybe. Any ideas, or any users trialing one on here. Just before Christmas i got the tip off that Lluis Gallach's Alfer was up for sale. Up to this point it was just one of those factory bikes that had disappeared and i had no idea where it had gone to . Neither had Lluis. So , before it got the chance to disappear once again i went down there to grab some photos and speak to the owner. He turned out to be Felip Gonzalez who built the Alfer and Scorpa bikes with Albert Juvanty. My 84 Yam TY 250 mono has Z spokes with the gold colored rims. There is some lateral runout of about 7mm over 30 deg of the front wheel. How are these wheels for truing? I've never tried truing a Z spoke wheel before. Also, is there a wheel from another bike......newer perhaps, or from another model of Yamaha or other make that would work on the ty 250? Wondering if replacing the whole wheel is any option at all? Cheers.

I bought an original 1986 Gas Gas Halley on tinternet. Matey said it was complete......but it wasnt, the silencer was missing I need to fabricate another one to match the original exactly. The body of the silencer will be hard anough to replicate the original . I also need to source some internal baffle pipe which i can run through the centre of the silencer. Does anyone know of a company or person selling any ? Is it available ? It would save me drilling hundreds of holes in a bit of pipe which would be pretty grim Ta

Hi have nearly finished my TY mono rebuild . I've found a few problems on the way & would like to discuss them. My bike has a YZ 250 front brake plate fitted & iv'e had to machine a extended torque lug for the fork leg/ brake plate,anyone else had to do this? I also found that the carb had had a few DIY mods on it that didn't work very well.Corrected this by adjusting the float height to 23mm with the float tang just seating in the float valve slot, next fitted 42 pilot jet, highly vented air box lid, 145 main jet & needle back in the std position , air screw 1, 1/2 turns out. Can you help i have an old jcm 323 trial bike with the TI engine fitted. the clutch is slipping and not able to ride out of 3rd gear, as the bike is one of the first 35 bikes made it has a different clutch fitted the friction plates are more like a rear sprocket than a friction plate, there is a sureflex make on the plate but unable to find a listing for the bike or engine, have contacted them and no answer... have spoken to Joel in france but have no parts left and no part no. Just bought a 1989 gas gas 250, it needs a bit of tlc but not sure where to get them, I need fork seals and the front brake caliper is seized so may need a new one ( brembo), also general items such as air filter,brake pads and also is there a parts of service manual out there for this type of bike. Hi, I am currently rebuilding a TYMono that has been paired to a Rushton Chair. Its a full strip down, powder coat, replace all bearings etc. It has been converted to a twin shock on the back end which I prefer for the chair use. A few loose ends I am hoping to box out whilst the frame is off being coated: 1) Does anyone know any UK retailers who do front fork springs. TY Trials, SM and InMotion don't seem to list them and the Magicals website said it was going to be back up on 1 Sept but is still down 2) Has anyone replaced the expensive/moulded rear mudguard with a stock replacement available from the sites above. It's a 1984 TY 250 mono. It's got the shock with the remote reservoir. I've taken the preload to the max and wound the spring to it's tightest setting with the two locking rings. The back end bottoms out far too easily - I'm about 100kg with all my gear on. Is there anything else I can do? Does anyone do a heavy duty spring? Should I put a packer in front of the lock rings so they compress existing spring more? My guess is I'll lose some travel but it might be worth it? Should I lay off the beer and pies to lose a few kg's (I think this has to be a very last resort)? Any advice greatly appreciated.

Im in the middle of a restoration and have 2 questions that i need help with please. I want to plate alloy. I want a bright / chrome like / polished plating. Whats the brightest and blingest that is available to average Jo? I need steel tubing , 200mm long / inner 17mm / outer diameter 20mm. This is for internal hub wheel spacers. I'll need to machine a step in them to slip inside the bearings.Im sure you guys will have come across the type before. Where can i get this tubing from - any recommendations ? Thanks

It´s been a while since i was here! I just finished my rebuild of my new Honda Aircooled Mono TLM 250R (1988). A quite rare Bike and it seems to be underrated in my opinion. I was looking for an air-cooled mono and wanted to have a disk brake at least on the front. And i was in the mood for a japanese bike again. A few days before christmas i bought this bike in really bad condition. Parts are not easy to find, but when you get a little creative a lot is possible. I managed to find a wössner piston of a 250 Rotax that was available in 74,50 and 75,00 sizes. The main difference was the 18mm Piston Pin and a different shape to the dome. …
