Superbikes

Although my main interest is trialling, I'm a bit involved in classic road racing. My wife runs Spencer Racing, running bikes mostly with the CRMC. Over the last few years our 1967 Suzuki 200 racer has won the CRMC Classic Ultralightweight Championship 8 times. This season we'll be putting around 15 bikes out on track, mainly in the Junior Production class with Yamaha 600's. We're fielding a couple of bikes in the Aircooled 500 class too, both with the CRMC and BHR. Also running a couple of Honda 125 racers with a new class with BHR. Keep you eyes out for the XR 1200 single make series this year it should be good racing. A couple of big names have signed up allready. I bought a road going one just befor christmass and if its anything to go on the racers will be fantastic. There is something verry satisfiying about going up the inside of an R1 on a roundabout on a big twin,sat bolt up right pretending your not trying, depending how long the next straight is most of the time they come back past so you can do it again at the next twisty bit,Deep joy.

Interesting how many of this years Superbike grid have either started out riding trials or still ride a trials bike. James Toseland, rode schoolboy trials in the East Midlands, Chris Walker former motocrosser and last I heard rides a Beta, Craig Jones got a Montesa for Christmas and former WSBK rider Garry McCoy has a couple of 4RT's Biggest trials nut out there is my old mate Steve Martin who has a Sherco 4T, Beta Rev3, 125 & 350 Bultaco Sherpas and....understandably an SWM Keep an eye out for him this weekend at Phillip Island, bet he wont put his foot down once! It alway amazes me that when you see a collection of ‘superbikes’ parked up, the riders when they take their helmets off are ??? really quite old and probably drawing a pension or two. I have to include myself in the ‘quite old’ area but lucky enough to pass as younger so my other half says....bit too risky to argue! A bike dealer friend nodded in the direction of a Ducati 748 just pulling into the parking area of his dealership. Wait until he takes his helmet off my friend said. Man on Ducati stops, side stand gingerly down and he slides off bike standing all hunched the way you tend to in race leathers. This riders were yellow to match the bike (possibly even the colour…

... one of our riders, James Ford, has been at the Pre TT at the Billown circuit at the Isle of Man where he rode one of our Yamaha FZ600s to a brilliant 7th place against pukka Yamaha TZ race bikes in the Geoff Duke Race and a superb 5th place on the ex Ray Stringer MEDD Kawasaki 750 in the 4hire post classic senior race. Honda riders continued their domination of the 2006 World Supersport Championship, but unlike the first three races of the season, world championship leader Sebastien Charpentier (Winston Ten Kate Honda CBR600RR) was not the winner. That honour went to WSS rookie Yoann Tiberio (Megabike Honda CBR600RR) who turned an eighth place qualifying performance into an impressive victory in front of a sun-drenched Italian crowd. Terrible news from Brands yesterday, a huge British talent and nice lad took his final corner in the World Supersport Race. Had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times and being passed like i was stood still at Mallory a few years ago, he'll be sorely missed by a huge amount of people. Thoughts are with his family and friends, vey sad day for the world of road racing.

Horrible crash from one of my favourite BSB riders at Cadwell over the weekend, anyone who saw it will know how painfull and serious the accident must be for him and his career. Get well soon Leon, hope the recovery goes well and we'll see you back out next season
