Montesa

  1. Started by barfy,

Got the tank off my Montesa while I have it flattened, so I was wondering about linking out the bank sensor. I found a post saying that it's easy to do, but can't find the related post where it's actually described how to do it. How do you link out the bank sensor? Are there any consequences? Like you can't lay the bike almost flat on the ground because I've taken off the stand (it never floods)?

If anyone here speaks Spanish, I wonder what he is saying about the prototype at the end. It is something Montesa should sell us if it weighs the same as the current bikes.

Anyone use a TwinAir replacement air filter on their RT? Did you retain the steel screen? Any comments?

What’s everyone using? I have an x11 on the rear which I thought used to be the holy grail, I was at Shatterford on Sunday and a bloke there was saying they are rubbish, no grip! Dunlop’s are the dogs, best grip ever. Was he talking *****? No self respecting rider would touch Dunlop a few years ago!

Hi, new member to TC and 348 Montesa's. I'm trying to replace the crank seals on my 348 but I'm unable to remove the clutch basket! I would have expected the basket to lift off the shaft fairly easily once the nut, lock washer and clutch pack are removed but mine seems to be stuck!! Could the bearing be stuck on the shaft? Do I need a puller? Any advise would be appreciated.

Has anyone ever had any experience with a slipping kick start lever? I normally give the bike a few kicks with the decompression lever depressed, then a few kicks with the lever released and it should start. However sometimes you kick and the engine will turn over fine. Other times the lever just kicks (not very smoothly) and the engine doesn't turn. Any advice will be appreciated.

  11. Hi, I wonder what the forum's thoughts are on maintenance. I have just bought a late 2016 4RT which has clearly had next to no use. The seller reckoned that it has been used for no more than 3 or 4 hours. Gauging by its good nick, tyres, paint, wheels, casings I think so. Certainly never been trialled and looks like it's been stored in a dry place. The manual talks hours and annual/bi-annual checks and works. I have changed engine oil and filter (was Honda OEM and probably this is its first service), gear Oil, plug and air filter. Given its age and not its use should I be doing anything else or am I good to go? Runs and starts fine. All thoughts appreciate…

Afternoon all, Over the weekend I took the plunge and part ex’d my EVO for a barely used 2016 260 4RT in the lovely Repsol colours. Had a great couple of hours on it yesterday and all is well. I did notice however that the chain has very little adjustment left on the snails, I looked at a brand new bike at the shop and also loads of pictures online and they all seem to come with very long chains as new using up half or more of the snail cam. Has anyone else picked up on this or is it me?

Hi, new member and first post, so here goes. Just purchased a 1981 MH349. Bit scruffy and didn't want to start but it was a cheap bike to see if I could do this trial thing. I would guess it hasn't been used for a couple of years. Got it running OK. New plug, fuel and a minor carb refurb. Was running it up and down my quiet steep drive to check out the fueling, still not sure that it is setup right, but after a couple of hours of stopping and starting it's now stuck in first gear. Whatever I do it feels like the gear change lever is not doing anything. Any idea what to do? I don't know if the oil is any good. Is it worth changing that first? I see the…

  15. Can anyone help, once the crankcases are split with how to correctly set the kickstart tension. The one I’m renovating has obviously been split historically and it’s not been set up properly. In that I mean the kickstart goes back wards to the 9 pm position before it engages. The obvious has happened, the owner has been kicking at it and the kickstart stopper has holed the casing. Found a manual on line, but it doesn’t describe the process of setting it to get the correct tension. I’ve done loads of Sherpas, I haven’t split the cases yet, it may be obvious when I see the components face to face. Thanks in advance everyone.

I’ve got a 76 Cota 348, and it has a lot of clutch play. The brass button and spider are in good condition, but when I put the case on, the arm the cable hooks to has a lot of free play. Are there any solutions to this?

Hi All. I live in Ontario Canada and I just managed to get hold of a 1973 Cota 247 in kit form OR as I like to call it a challenging project! The previous owner has stripped everything down - and I mean everything - boxes containing engine/brake/etc... no order to anything! Has anybody any idea where I can get a manual from? Thanks Steve

Just wondering how busy the rad fan is meant to be - pretty much, as soon as I hit any technical bits (2nd gear), the fan cuts-in (and out), on a pretty regular basis. Is this normal for the Honda 4T unit... compared to my usual 2T rides, which hardly ever necessitated the fan to intervene, this does seem excessive. The bike is new, fluids at correct levels and nothing obviously amiss. I'm considering filling with waterless coolant, but again, what is best? Anyone able to shed some light? Thanks in advance.

I have a 260 4rt 2016 and would appreciate other owners thoughts and experience with this switch. I hoped the switch would soften the motor with an option for more grunt if needed. I was led to believe the switch was more effective on these bikes than some others as it controlled the fuel injection. I tried the switch in both settings back to back while practicing sections yesterday in the dry but can't seem to notice any immediate difference to power delivery.
