Hi all! I just joined recently to see if anyone might have a potential solution to my problems with my Montesa Cota 172… hopefully I’m in the right place. The bike has been in my family since new, my older brother was the last to use it 20 odd years ago. I got it with the intent to get her running, here’s a list of what I’ve tried to do to get it going; 1.Replaced crank seals 2.Checked spark (bright blue and consistent with a brand new spark plug, verified coil is working correctly) 2.Verified timing (hasn’t changed since new) 3.Rebuilt the Amal 620 carburetor (tickler works as intended now) 4.Cylinder leakdown test passed I’…

Hi Chaps Thought I would take a punt and see if anyone has any info on King Scorpions M34 (not the autolube model) I know the Scorpion isn't a trials bike, but Ive just taken ownership of one and don't know what to do with it. It runs and is 90% original, but needs a lot of love. Paint, rims, cables, tank lining, the lot, probably an engine rebuild wouldn't go a miss either, but is it worth it, were they any good? are these bikes worth investing that time and money into ? any info would be greatly received. Many thanks

Posting for a little advise really.... I've got a 2008 model 4rt, in June time I had a 280 kit fitted (Athena) heard pretty good things about the make but not so bank breaking as a s3 kit... whilst running it in after the change the engine was really loud, you could really hear the piston working, I was reassured by a montesa owners this is pretty normal after having the 280 fitted. They were right after couple of weeks it really quietened down but now there is a tapping sound coming from the engine on tick over and the first quarter of the throttle... I'm keen on the maintenance, I run Castrol engine oil and elf in the gearbox so its not like i'm running crap through i…

  8. In the process of replacing worn needle rollers on my 06' 4RT's suspension. Done the dog bone - relatively straightforward in the vice, a little heat and a couple of sockets either end of an 8mm threaded stud to push the old ones out. The next one is the one under the swing arm. It looks tricky to remove these in situ but I've no idea how easy or difficult it is to remove the swinging arm so I can work on them on the bench? Anyone care to share their experience please. Thanks, Ian

Hi all, has anyone fitted a decompressor to the Cota 248 ? It seems that the hole has never been drilled probably because the smaller bore didn´t leave enough room. A 348 head would do the job but reduce the compression so if anyone has previously tried this please say what it did to compression !

Hi, i am assembling the gear box and having problems with the first and 4th gear: the one gear in the main shaft is a spin gear and has no slide gears close to engage and transmit movement to the countershaft. as a consequence when i get first in, no rotation is transmitted to the sprocket. any advice please?

Montesa 315R On my new bike...........a couple of questions.......??? a) Do I change it after 'running in' for the 1st time.........OR after 3 rides as the comprehensive HRC manual suggests...........I would prefer to change after initial running in..........just to be on safe side... b)Elf HTX 740 is recommended in manual and dealer... BVM............recommended it as the correct oil and the best/only oil to avoid potential 'clutch drag' c) Any other oil that's just as good...........(because it's bloody expensive for tansmission oil @

Hi, I am trying to find out what size jets to buy for an early cota 200. Are they the same as the ones listed for the mk2 carb fitted to the later ones? Thanks in advance.

Hi, I have just acquired a Montesa cota 248. I’m new to the biking world so I need advice! Its in fairly good condition and has been stored in a heated garage for the last 20ish years. Firstly, the last owner told me the gear shifter turns 180 degrees once put into 1st gear. Is this a common issue? If not, is it easier enough to open the gearbox? I work in engineering so have a good technical background. Secondly, it hasn’t been started for years so what sort of maintenance should I do before starting it?

Hi, What do you think of the above as a first bike for a 13st adult compared to a Sherco 250 2004 or a 99 Cota 315 RX? Are the R and RX the same bike? Any known faults to look for? Thanks,
