  1. make sure your earting pionts are good and clean. I think your cdi has its own earth wire, if its not that good a connection it could cause issues with cdi init. If you have the seperate coil version, check that too, not sure if that has to be grounded. Just a thought. TLTEL
  2. hi I have the same bikes, The TL, I have had since 1979 and did a rebuild on it about six or seven years ago. mine was in far worse condition than yours. I sprayed it as original, orange and silver. ill see if I can get a photo of it at the weekend. Tlr is original, red, white and blue, sadly I dont ride either of them much as I prefer the power of my 350 gas gas. I have a CG125 engine mount in my garage and I am sure its the same as the TLR one.. TLTEL
  3. I have to agree with you there, I think a roller bearing is a strange choice, it makes them unessarseraly fragile, prone to collecting dirt and expensive to replace. Solid bushes would be cheaper and easier to replace.. TLTEL
  4. Hi Snobbly. Our trial that was cancelled in December has been resceduled for the16th feb, same place, we are going to make it on the easy side so come along and have a go. you can enter on the day, no problem. TLTEL

  7. Hi Dan I mean on the inner hub, it seems that about four or five of the square splines were doing all the work so were pitted badly, this bike is a 1996 so I wouldn't expect it to be perfect. As I said when I fitted new clutch plates it was done in a rush the day before a trial so I didn't have time to check it over. The old plates were loosing the friction pads so obviously slipping. Its working now anyway. TLTEL

  9. Hi I did the "fix" to my sons Gas Gas last week, took about 2 hours of filing and scrapping. It was in a bid to ease the terrible drag. Some of the plates had glue between the friction pads but not all of them. This was a new clutch pack a few years ago but it was fitted in a rush. The clutch drum splines were quite grooved on some of the splines but not all, so assume the original machining wasn't that good. We were at a trial today and the clutch has been transformed neutral can be selected easily and seems to have a better feel at the lever. This clutch has never worked properly since we have owned it. So yes it does work on other brands. TLTEL

    Gasgas Overheating

    hi, I think you should have a thermo switch on top of the rad somewhere that just kicks in the fan as required. I had the same problem today on my 96 gasser, so much mud and spent so much time stuck and revving the bike so much it started to gush steam from the overflow. By then my body had, had enough so headed back to the van. I will give the bike a going over tomorrow but I think it was probably because the rad was caked in mud and combined with the revving and heavy going that caused it. It was fine on the long ride back to the van, TLTEL
  12. Hi As you know the air will be introduced to the system at the top, it makes sense to push new fluid up from the bottom. Best way is with a loaded syringe fitted to bleed nipple. If you push down from the top you may trap the air in the calliper. This is a job that will either be incredibly easy or incredibly hard. If you do it with a syringe, fit it to nipple with a short piece of clear pipe, slacken nipple and draw some fluid out before slowly pushing fluid into the system. You need to do this with the reservoir cap off, so beware it may spray into the air at first. I now just drape a rag over it to stop it spraying. Keep pushing till you see no bubbles, then re-fit reservoir lid, hopefully job done. Another thing to be careful of is squeezing brake lever with the cap off as this can cause fluid to squirt upwards too. Good luck. I assume you know brake fluid is a great paint stripper so be careful. TLTEL
  13. I think you need to make sure you have the correct sprockets fitted, I think they should be flat on a 99 model but not sure. have you got the correct wheel and or wheel spacers, the only other things I can think of is bent swinging arm or worn swinging arm bushes. TLTEL
  14. hi I removed the linkage from mine and just refitted the existing lever to the splined shaft, it works fine like that. I think if I put the bike back on the road, I would re-fit the linkage. TLTEL

  16. Risky, how does he know its the rings?,(usually two), has he had it apart?, has it damaged the piston? has it damaged the cylinder plating? unless you know how to repair it your self and its more like £300 walk away from it. TLTEL

Hi, I have not had any problem with leaks on mine or my sons Gassers, the ether spray will start any thing even if it has no spark but remember there is no lubrication in it and it should not be used as a "cure" .it should in my opinion only be used as a last resort emergency. Dismantle and clean the carb I am sure that's where your problem is. New plug too. TLTEL
  18. From my experience with my son, we got the 125 when he was 12 or 13 after he kept wanting to ride my TL125. He startted on the begginer route with a slow action throttle and soon gained confidence and although the bike was a bit big for him at first it didnt bother him and as said, they start to grow like weeds around that age and he is still riding the same bike at 17. The 80s are good bikes but if he is going to keep trialing, you will be buying a bigger bike next year , guaranteed, along with bigger shirt, bigger pants, bigger boots, bigger helmet etc. TLTEL

Hi You don't say weather you have cleaned the carb, if not you need to do that first and check that the choke jet is clear and is opening when you turn on the choke (fuel enrichment jet probably) I am not sure what size engine is in the 321 model but if its the 350cc as in my 320 model then try using the higher/super grade fuel. I always use it in mine and it's pretty much always a one kick starter no matter how long I leave it. I have never needed all the rocking back and forth (not since I was in a craddle anyway) but do push kicker gently till I find compression, let lever back up then one solid kick with my body weight, without snatching at the lever. Try it. TLTEL
  20. Sorry I meant to say I think Splat shop have the piston kits listed (or they did) to get an idea of cost if you feel it does need doing. You will need head seals and base gasket, you may as well do the small end roller bearing while you are in there. Not too difficult with basic spannering skills. TLTEL

I am always a bit cautious when people say they rebuilt the engine, to some it means replaced every seal gasket bearing piston etc. To others it may mean changed the head seals and fitted a new plug. Some people will fit new rings because they can't think what else to spend their money on so do it weather they are needed or not. When you go to a trial and sit in a queue of running bikes, some do make the strangest noises even new bikes. I would tend to look at the bikes overall condition, you can usually tell if a bike has been abused. Does it look like its 8 years old ? You at least will get a limited warrantee if you are buying from a dealer, TLTEL
  22. I would check out the acu rules on their website, My understanding is that you can ride a 250 at 16 and 17 but you can not ride in the youth class, you ride as an adult and pay the adult trial entry fee. You may need to make sure your licence state adult and not youth A. TLTEL

  24. Today I did the "clutch fix " to my sons JTR125 , Spent a few hours filing off burrs and scraping glue off the friction plates, put in new ATF and wow, we now have a clutch that works properly. I rode it round in the garden to warm it up, I was able to find neutral easily. First time the clutch has worked properly since we got the bike about 4 years ago. I did replace all the plates once but fitted them in a rush and the clutch has never freed off as it should. TLTEL
