  1. Hello I am going to the Scott on Saturday and would appreciate if anyone could advise me which sections are the best to watch at and where are they? I've heard about Surrender etc. but have not got a clue where they are. I've copied the map from the Richmond Motor Club website onto my Ordanance Survey maps so hopefully I am a bit better organised than the last time I went. Thanks in advance for any help. Scragg

    315r

The gear box oil filler is behind the banjo bolt for the clutch hydralic line. Vertically above the drain plug. Its a pig to get off. I made special funnel with a hose attached to pour the oil in but the fillers too small. In the end I removed the clutch cover and poured the oil in there with the bike on its side. Apart from that there nice bikes. I wish I still had mine.

    Gearbox Oil

I use PJ1 75w light clutch tuner Worked well in all the bikes we've had. Gas Gas, Beta, Sherco, Montesa 315. Ask your local dealer, they will advise.
  4. I think you're son is limited to an 80. I went thought about getting my son a 125 but opted for an 80 and have no regrets as it was excellent. Easy to start an not intimidating while he learned how to ride, it was his first bike with a clutch. For such low powered bike it was amazing what it would do. I bought a Gas Gas and had no problems with it at all in the two and a half years we had it. I think the Gas Gas is better built than the BETA 80, the Sherco is significantly more expensive. The Gas Gas was more than adequate for my son. However if you are more serious the BETA has the better engine. Two national class kids in our centre ride the expert course on BETA 80s. Very impressive.

    Gearbox Oil

I was told by a mechanic of some repute, who specialises in trials bikes to flush out using the petrol /oil mix I put in the tank. I had second thoughts about this when I got home so I used kerosine though I am sure diesel or parafin would do the same job. I have flushed a number of gear boxes for various reasons and and had no problems afterwards. Whatever you use though when you run the engine do not put the gearbox under any load.
  6. Hello. I am thinking of buying a twin shock and I appreciate these old things, even ones that look mint, can be a bit of an unknown quantity and take some sorting. What I want to avoid is buying something I can't get bits for, especially engine parts at realistic prices. At the minute I would like a Bultaco or an Ossa or maybe even a Fantic or Montesa. Something probably mid seventies very early eighties. What should I avoid? Any suggestions/guidance or help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Scragg
  7. Its sound to me like it could be running lean at low revs. If its stood for a while the pilot jet may be tarnished. Try cleaning it with a strand or two of copper very gently. If that doesn't work it may be the flywheel side crankshaft seal letting leaking and letting air into the engine. Hope its something easier though.
  8. Fit a slow action throttle. I have an 05 290 and retarded the ignition as far as I could. The bike has nice soft power now. To get the flywheel off the 05 needed a 30mm diameter 1.5mm thread flywheel puller. Got mine from those nice people at Trialsbits.co.uk.
  9. i love it but i think the number 1 is a bit tacky like the rims and forks
  10. Sorry for the delay in replying. Tips I learned the hard way. Buy as much as you can from a bearing factor as it's loads cheaper. I only got the mains and seals but I am sure you can get the water pump bearings and seals from there. The Ryan Young manuals on the Sherco USA website are brilliant step by step instructions. Before you remove the engine from the frame remove the clutch and water pump side crankshaft end bolt. You will be able to this using a fly wheel holding tool. You will need to make a fly wheel holding tool and need a flywheel puller. Trialsbits are very reasonable for a puller. I don't know the exact size off the top of my head but I could measure mine if you want. Let me know.
  11. Initially I retarded mine halfway (about 4mm). Then someone gave a go on their bike that had a fully retarded ignition. This was rotated to the maximum the slots in the stator would allow. I did the same to mine and it made it nice and soft at the bottom with still more than enough mid to top end power. I am assuming the 04 has the same Leonelli ignition as fiited onto my 05 290, I think it does. Got the flywheel puller from Trialsbits.co.uk. If you need to know the size and thread pitch let me know and I will measure mine.
  12. I don't know if it's the same thing but I had problems with my 05 290 intermittently running very low at low revs. It went for ages, constantly stripping the carb down, replaced all of the gaskets and seals in the carb, reed valves, rubbers etc. At the end of the day it was the crankshaft oil seals. The bike hadn't done a lot of work but the play in the main bearings caused the oil seals to wear letting in too much air therefore running lean. Apparently Shercos have poor quality main bearings. Hope you find an easier fix but thats what cured mine.
  13. I agree with the master blaster except fit in inside the garage. They are so loud they make your ears hurt when they are fitted outside. No one could bear the noise in an enclosed space. Also use a pet immune dual tech detector (about
  14. Has anyone out there converted a BETA 125 to a 200? I maybe getting an 06 125 for my son and wondered if it would be practical to convert it to a 200 at a later date. I have been on the BETA website and cannot find any tech details to see if the stroke is the same. What parts would be required? Any idea of the cost? Thanks in Advance
  15. Is the choke lever returning to the fully off position as they are rather inacessible? If not it will make the motor run rich when warm. The Dellorto is more or less the same as the my Sherco. I have had this problem in the past. The choke lever can often catch the recess it's supposed to sit in.
  16. You can put your helmet in the bath or sink with some washing powder in the water. It won't do it any harm, helmets are just plastic / composite, polystyrene and a bit of fabric. Just don't plan to use it the following day. Friend of mine used to this with his moto X lid. Maybe thats why he went bald though!! - Only joking, it works. If your worried use ordinary soap, if its mild enough for skin it should be OK on a helmet.
  17. Can anyone recommend a basic trials riding techniques DVD. I need all the help I can get.
  18. Had the exactly the same problem with my sons 05 Rookie. It was using a spark plug a month and starting became a bit temperamental. The original plug was a Champion so were the following two. Changed to NGK BR5ES / B5ES (?) plugs and we don't seem to have a problem now. Hope this helps.
