  1. A reply from Rob Schoening: Hi Dylan! Thanks for the pic, awesome to see one over there! Yes, I know Bob, great guy...he purchased this knife from within the past year. It is part of a limited run of knives I worked on with Larry Vickers of Vickers Tactical. All of the knives were set up with the Military, specifically the Infantryman in mind.   2. I think its 0-1 tool steel, high carbon as ss cannot be parkerized to my knowledge. Im going to email Randall and try get some more info from him. It is a solid knife. Spine is 1/4", for he purpose of prying a pilot out of a cockpit. That was one of the requirements when designing the blade. Quite cool.
  3. Randalls are all hand made. I did a google search on the VST and all are different designs, slightly. This knife was made as part of a pair, #14 & #15 with consecutive serial numbers. The generous guy who gave it to me, owns its sister. Its a collaboration between Randall, Larry Vickers and Rob Schoening aimed at US military soldiers. VST stands for Vickers Subdued Tactical. A handmade Randall is worked over by Larry and Rob. Bead blasted and parkerized and some other bits and pieces to reduce reflection. Still cant believe it......I own a fair bit of great, expensive knives but this is in the Bugatti league.

  5. Now thats a good idea.....im gonna try tape my hands to the bars except for my index fingers and also tape my boots to the pegs......that will certainly solve a few of my issues
  6. Thing is when you do bigger obstacles, or any for that matter.....you will or should always have the clutch and brake under full control.....therefore leaving 3 finger and thumb on the bars. In your case, 2 fingers and a thumb. Learn to ride with one finger on each leaver, its the right way to do it.
  7. Agree with above. Even using one finger I still find myself wishing I had a few extras on each hand. Not as if im doing BIG obstacles but when you do move onto bigger stuff, you will be needing as many fingers on the bar as possible.
  8. Hi guys First pic is me and my guiding crew with the 2nd rhino darted this morning in the attempt of protecting him against poachers. We planted a chip in both horns and his neck and obtained tissue, nail and hair samples as well as notched his ears for identification. Poaching of these animals WILL lead to their extinction without OUR help!

  10. Merry Christmas Dan. I read all your posts carefully and take note of all your advice. Thanks for your input. I tried to send you a pm about 13 evo steering head clunk. I found your post about it and shimmed between my stem and top clamp with a piece of coke can. Was curious to know your thoughts on how wear would take place between can and aluminium and what you think of a can as a shimming material ?? Anyway, hope you had a good one
  11. Ye, im fortunate to guide two safaris a day, every day if I have guests (most of the time). Im head guide at a lodge called Makanyane Safari Lodge on the border between SA and Botswana. Its a awesome job but long hours, 4am - 8pm for 6 weeks at a time then 10 days off. Beats a office job though

  14. Hi guys My dad is unbelievably talented in the workshop but lacks the time to mess around on forums like me . The red Honda is a xl185 reincarnated and the Rothmans is a xr200 mono. My pops has a passion for building classics and as far as im concerned, hes dam good at it. Engines are worked on and done up by his buddy (technical inspector of the SA GP bikes) but EVERYTHING else is done by my dad......chopping frames, molding tanks/fairings/sray jobs the works. My pops has competed on everything with 2 wheels and still rides like a champ. His main focus is classic GP however, fairly recently he built a few classic trials bikes (which initiated my interest in the sport). Thought I would share.
  15. Hi Jon You need 100:1 in that chainsaw to stop all that smoking. You should also pack the canister with concrete to stop it getting gummed up, and add weight to help the blade through Kidding

  17. Hi Im curious, how long does 2t oil last you guys? Ive been riding since May this year and ive only used about 1.5litres of oil at 66:1. It seems like such a little. I try to ride 4/5 times a week, usually 3. Short rides, an hour or two. Can 2t oil go off once opened?
  18. Hi guys My boy (2.5yrs) is a true trials rider. He HAS TO ride through every bit of mud he can find. How do I clean his bike? Im presuming that I cant hose the bike down due to the electronics. Please dont say use a toothbrush.

  21. Hi guys My fist 2014 trial is on the 12th January so im riding every chance I get (every day at the moment). This spot is about 100 meters from my house with tons of rock. I havent riden on my obstacle course for a long time, im focusing on natural terain at the moment as its more random and I think it will prepare me alot better. I get guests soon so it will be back to the artificial course in my lunch break for a few weeks. Ps: yes I like my action shots with a wheel off the ground......it gives me that warm feeling inside
  22. Hi guys Had another 2hr session this afternoon and the front is still holding with the foam liner. So far so good. @ sherconood....thats my next plan. Im gonna cut 2cm strips of mattress foam and jam as much in as I can and use a second bead lock. Sure it will work. I did some quick maths and apparently it takes about 29 tennis balls to fill a 21" tire. According to Wikipedia that should add about 1.8kg to the wheel. My mattress foam is much lighter than that. Oh yes, I have a X light rear and a Trials light front. They are still in good shape so im gonna use them up, so no I wont be using a different tire just yet, on the next set, probably.

  24. Hi Taff These thorns do get picked up and then broken off by the mud guard leaving the thorn in the tire. Then, as we do, you ride over a rock and with our low preasure, the rock drives the thorn home. Im my game drive vehicle, I run the tires at 3 bar to help prevent this happening.
