  1. Depends where the previous owner fitted the condenser, it could be next coil or still in original position behind flywheel/mag. Check carb breather pipes not kinked, crushed or blocked. Fuel tank cap breather is this clear as guy53 suggested. Full ignition check, contact face condition (dark royal blue colour on contact faces indicates condenser ? Air filter is this clean and unrestricted/ bunged up with crap etc. Is exhaust relatively clear and not carbon loaded or oiled up. Piston is compression good and not too noisy piston slap wise, rings could be gummed up and causing running issues. At the end of the day diagnosing running faults etc is very difficult at a distance but hopefully you have enough to go at. Let us know if you sort the problem??
  2. The clutch on a TY 175 should be nice and light with a smooth take up. Too thick an oil will cause more issues, follow Carl Eckbloms suggestion for oil grade. A good look at all the parts of the clutch including checks for buckling etc and careful assembly following a manual should produce a more effective operating clutch for you. Clutchless gear changes should be ok on the TY if you are sensible about it. TY guy has the right method, clutch is for emergency only in section, assuming you are in the right gear!
  3. Agreed?? the head steady is an awful? piece of engineering. Do you mean the head steady set off the Pursang moto x? A proper bit of kit that. On my bike the one in the pic the head steady has been boxed to make it a bit stronger.
  4. Blindly what type of parachute do you carry? You are clear for landing, use runway Echo 5 winds North Easterly watch out for powered hang glider club members using grass area.
  5. Blimey what type of parachute do you carry? You are clear for landing, use runway Echo 5 winds North Easterly watch out for powered hang glider club members using grass area.
  6. TY175 under rated and overlooked by many, an excellent machine for the beginner or clubman upwards. Used to sell quite a few of these and the TY 125 which was also a good bike. A Majesty frame kit and 200cc conversion made them even better. ??
  7. When you consider how old these bikes are that get ridden, thrown and dropped everywhere they aren’t doing too badly if they break occasionally. Wonder what a more modern Trials bike will be like in 30-40 years time?
  8. 5 gears. Electronic ignition very good if bought from right supplier/ manufacturer. Expensive when you can buy an old lawn mower and rob the ignition off it. Skill level high (many spanner’s rating). Or equate cost of electric ign as against numerous contact and condesor sets that will take ages to wear out and give good acceptable running. Piston travelling up toward tdc ( top dead centre) at 2.3mm before tdc contacts should just be opening, breaking coil feed circuit and causing rapid collapse of magnetic field in coil windings and hence high-tension (HT) spark at plug gap. Make sure you rotate engine in normal d.o.r. Now ste timing to next experts view on best timing setting???
  9. Here’s a few pics of my 199 with the larger air box fitted and my own waterproofing seal made automotive heater sealing strip.
  10. That’s muscle waiting to be developed, proof is evident when you see a 30 stone bloke walking ( I use this term advisedly) down the street. Think of the power yet for you to release, bit like a tune up.?? Blimey, just realised that I’m in this category all shape and no substance??
  11. Draining the carb should not involve anything like the work you suggest. One drain screw or bolt and it’s done. Whats unhelpful about giving your opinion on a topic a member has asked help and advice with? Your ‘trusted dealer’ may give good, indifferent of bad advice. An awful lot depends on the experience of the dealer or in most cases who you ask the questions to. So the forum is an alternative to seek experienced advice from.
  12. Me I prefer 4stroke for enduro WR250 and WR450, the big engine is my favourite as it is more controllable and pulls like a tractor?? But for Trials it has to be 2stroke, engine is lighter and responds accordingly without the jackhammer effect! That’s a reason why some enduro riders prefer 2strokes too! It’s difficult to make a 4stroke any where as light as a 2stroke engine. Unless you have limitless amounts of money and access to highly sophisticated materials like unobtainium, tinsletide and scotchmistiomion.
  13. Not really fair on Honda as this was a weedy engine for quite a heavy bike. Hence the many mods made to them to make them competitive.?
  14. Well the best and probably forgotten bit about electric motors is this fact, they develop maximum torque from zero revs; just right for trials. That’s why underground electric trains and milk floats tend to leap away from standstill, also the reason your car/lorry starter motor is able to turn over an engine from stationary. Reduction ratio gearing accepted. As for Tesla there is one ( a saloon) near to where I live and trying to keep up on bends is nigh on impossible, it just rockets away into the next bend. There is a nasty rumour gaining weight that sitting in such a powerful electric atmosphere can be harmful to the human body!?
  15. Drain carb and tank even if it’s a case of the bike standing for only a week. It’s not like your having to deal with gallons of fuel. Better to have the fuel out of the bike altogether, stops pond life from riding yer bike away if they nick it! Leave carb drain screw/cock open during storage and attach a label to throttle to remind you to close it off when refilling fuel tank. If leaving the bike for some time then a few shots of silicon spray into the throttle slide and down into the carb float bowl will stop any white crusting occurring that you often get. WD40 tends to dry out although it has its uses?
  16. If I do my math 250 + 28 cc= 278cc whereas 250 + 75= 325. So I doubt there is much difference between a 250 and 278 but there is a noticeable margin with a 325. 28cc increase might give you 1.5 bhp extra but 75cc would possibly net you an extra 3-5 bhp. Going to specification wether it’s 238 or 244cc then the margin is even more. 325 engine uses same mount configuration as 250, so straight forward swap. You spend more cash ‘big boring. 250 to 280ish cc for not a lot of gain, probably better to get a 325 or larger engine but be careful the exhaust port/front pipe fixings may well be different. Anything is possible if you throw enough cash into the mix! There’s a degree of satisfaction in altering an engine, frame , etc because you can if you want to, so enjoy whatever option you decide upon and don’t be afraid to change your ideas at any time????. You may not get the money invested back when you come to sell etc. A 250 with a good quality re-bore and top quality piston assembly and some careful assembly and piston port matching plus ignition and carb set up should produce the best option and one which might increase the value of your machine, now that would be satisfying???
  17. Just type in Hugh’s Bultaco, or classic Bultaco or even Bultaco Alpina wiring diagram into you search engine and hey presto, works go me just checked and all the info you need is there??
  18. Ooh sorry to hear that, good Tig welder operator needed, hope you get that sorted ok. Reckon you’ll find that the cylinder head for 250/280 are the same but you may need a special (280) head gasket. Main question is the barrel the right one for your 2013 crankcases? When you come to refit the engine back into the frame try to ensure nothing is out of alignment eg frame bent, twisted. Don’t tighten any mounting bolts more than finger tight and then look to see if the frame lugs/engine mounts have any gaps, you may need to shim up if you locate any. ??
  19. Just sinch in your belt a few extra holes, that’s the bear belly taken care of. Stick some gel in your hair and run your fingers through and up to create a reasonably trendy hairstyle, if you are a bit thin on top or no hair(Dad worry)then just mime this bit. Chose a tightish pair of Lycra Trials pants and ease your body into them (hair gel comes in useful). Now fret ?and worry ?on what type and size engine bike to get. As a start set yourself a budget for the bike and a separate budget for riding gear, tools and fees, insurance etc. You may well have some stuff left over from your previous bike days. Take all the advice you can get and are given. Are the family going to be included in your sport days or just the wife, girlfriend, partner this would be an ideal opportunity to have a weekend away where you both get to do something together. Twinshock bikes are now getting expensive and for the same money you could get a more modern mono 2002 onwards. Visit a few more trials before taking the plunge so that you can see how others do it. I’ve been in love with trials bikes and trials riding since I was 14 years old and used to sit and drool over pictures of Dots and Greeves etc. As a result I have had quite a few, they look similar but they were all different to ride and they all had their own character, same as now with the modern extra light weight machines. I now sit and drool over unbelievably light weight looking modern bikes and pre-65 stuff, this could of course be down to my age but you may find that you have the right skill set only being 28 ( a mere whippersnapper?). What ever you end up with keep us posted and remember to enjoy it...Trials I mean! Moto x a bit to likely to hurt you more when come a cropper, more expensive too!??
  20. Lot of work for extra 30cc’s! ?
  21. Oh goodie but I’m not holding me breath!??‍♂️
  22. It’s rumoured that Local Councils are going to capitalise on a new venture involving a small entry fee to use some of their better potholed and crumbling roads as Trials sections. Only road registered machines can take part and no stakes to mark sections to be used so cones instead. Obviously some Local Authorities will have more challenging courses to set out but depth of some potholes could see some drowned engines/competitors. Observers must wear dayglo raincoats and know how to operate a hand held traffic sign. Courses in competent operation to be provided in due course. Any competitor being fived due to baulking by other traffic will at the discretion of the clerk of the course be awarded a minus for that section.
  23. Welcome from me. 175 Bultaco will be interesting to see what’s inside those crankcases? You should get plenty of good advice from the members on this forum. The bike looks to be in good condition from the photos. You can date and check models etc on the web there are at least three sites offering access to basically the same information.
  24. You can’t beat using the advertised prices that you will see in classic bike mag and old bike mart. Take some pics or copies of adverts for similar model C15’s and adjust your price to be in line with those advertised. This establishes market value, there will be no trade value as no trade guides were around in the sixties value relied upon the dealers and framers knowledge of the market. As you state the bike needs recommissioning so be reasonable about your valuation. Most insurance companies will want a valuation certificate raising by either their representative or independent value. On the other hand, the C15 has spent the last 30 years uninsured so what has changed. You haven’t let it be seen from the street etc. Scanning google or bike mags may sort you an insurance company that will insure for an agreed value at a price. ? Good luck!
