  1. You said in your original post that you wanted to soften the rear end. Gassers are supplied with the adjuster set to the softest setting. If you sheared it off, chances are your bike was on this setting. Did you try turning it the other way first? Apparently this only alters the high speed settings so you would only notice a difference on big hits and not when the low speed circuits are working, ie bouncing up and down on the bike in the garage. So as your original intention was to soften the rear end it is now at its softest setting albeit that it will have to stay there. 2. Have you tried kicking it over in darkness to see if the electrics are shorting out anywhere? Take out the two oval covers up by the headstock beforehand. Long shot but worth a go and costs nowt!

  4. The Raptors are superb. Had them on my Beta for about three months now and they are excellent. I do loads of really muddy trials and they don't clog up like the standard ones and I have not noticed any real chew up on the soles of my boots but the grip on the pegs can't be faulted. In terms of value for money I think that for two well engineered pieces of titanium, sub

    Fork Seals

Hi Taylo63. Go to the gas gas forum, look for a question posted 30 jan 07 "Gears not down shifting", look for reply No.8 and click on the link. A load of videos should come up detailing how to pull apart a GasGas including the forks, step by step. This should give you a good idea of what is involved for your Beta and whether it is something you want to tackle. It is also a good guide to any other jobs that may come your way in the future. If I was a computer geek I could give you an easier way to go straight to it, maybe someone else can help with that? Hope this helps.
  8. Clarkson as PM? Let's just consider the overnight changes; Speed humps removed Speed cameras removed Speed limits raised where applicable in line with improvements to vehicle engineering over the last 25yrs Petrol 20p a litre Parking wardens retrained to have discretion or sent to work in hospitals/build hospitals Wheel spinning spotty uninsured sub 1.3L hatchback driving morons used to underpin new hospital foundations The re-introduction of common sense Political Correctness re-assigned to the nearest land fill Yep, could work

  10. Very very addictive. And you don't end up in an ambulance on the way to A&E when you get it wrong. Always a bonus in my book!
  11. Sometimes the original is the best and then someone comes along and has to have a fiddle. eg. The "classic shape" Impreza Mk1 Golf GTi Peugeot 205 GTi Supermarine Spitfire Mission Impossible....the TV series Cross-Fire Raleigh Chopper etc etc
  12. Well pointed out Essex Rider. Anyone got an A1M1 Abrams tank I could borrow? I would like to drive through a few MacDonalds. Straight through. Any teachers out there finding "text spelling" appearing in normal school work?
  13. Why is texting language annoying? Because it is another example of the errosion of standards. Why should it become acceptable to spell things incorrectly just because it is quicker and people can't be bothered? We already have PlayStation generation who never or hardly ever read books and think that being a "celebrity" is the be all and end all in life. The same generation who think exercise is walking from their car into MacDonalds. Not so long ago, another generation fought to maintain the standards that this country was once proud of. Call me old fashioned if you like, to me that would be a compliment.

I'm betting there will be a shortage of WD40/Silicon Protector/ArmourAll in your area for some time to come! Enjoy and keep the reports coming.

    Beta 4-stroke

So how was it? Any problems starting when hot? Any cough when cracking open the throttle? Is it in the front room now?
  16. Yep, that sounds spot on. Perhaps the Honda manual lost something in translation. It also said change the piston every 5 mins and I never paid any attention to that..... too busy fiddling with the fork height.
  17. Must admit I thought about it for a while and then looked in a handbook for a Honda MX bike. It says there re fork height adjustment; On long fast tracks where there are few turns, consider a position with the top surface of the upper clamp positioned below the top of the fork tube, the standard position aligns the top of the fork tube with the top of the upper triple clamp. If you are right Scorpa3, no wonder that bike kept spitting me off. Probably getting their own back for Iwa Jima In a paragraph re rear suspension it says; Reducing the spring preload will increase fork rake and trail so stability in a straight line is improved. Seems to be contradictory Conclusion, reading is bad for you! Thinking is worse. Please direct any abuse to the Honda Motor Co.
  18. Was thinking more along the lines of maximum power and maximum torque available rather than a comparison on how they ride and how they deliver that performance.
  19. Alters the angle of the forks slightly. Forks level with top clamp, bike will turn more easily. Yokes slid down so that the fork leg protrudes above it, bike will be more stable.
  20. There is a saying that sometimes less is more. But sometimes less is not enough. And sometimes more is too much. Confused? Life is about choices and variety is the spice of life. If we all chose to ride the same bikes what a boring world it would be. Never being able to say "I wonder what that is like to ride" or "I wouldn't mind one of those next time" Ya pays ya money ya takes ya pick. And on most bikes the throttle works both ways. And now to light the blue touch paper and stand back.....................the new breed of 250 four strokes probably deliver performance very similar to a 200 two stroke. Discuss

NJB Expert have 4" of travel and a spring rate according to your weight or preference
  22. It's probably not the spell check or dictionary causing the problems but I could be wrong.
  23. Bultaco 340 White Frame 6 Speeder..................................................nice Ok it's from the eighties but you get the drift.
  24. I have a theory re- the popularity and increase in some twinshock prices based on my own experiences of "growing up". Back in the seventies I was in my teens and would work all the summer holidays in order to save up for a trials bike. The Spanish four were always available, 4th or 5th hand at a reasonable price and in order to get a newer bike, I always had to sell the current bike to add to the coffers to buy the next one. Buying a new bike was out of the question, so was hanging on to the old one, but always dreamed of the day I could do that and always looked on enviously at the guys with the new, latest bikes as they wheeled them out at trials. Now 28yrs or so later and with a bit more disposable income, I still remember those days. As a way of holding onto that era, I recently bought and restored the 'then' bike of my dreams. I could never afford one back then, but now I can, and now I have one. I think there are probably a few more 40 somethings out there who have done the same thing, so that the bikes of the seventies fetch higher prices, as the more sought after models get bought up, never to be sold on, not something that could be done when we were younger. As each generation successively reaches this time of disposable income, so each generation of the bikes of their youth become desirable, perpetuating the recycling of the older bikes. Right, off to fetch a tissue to wipe away a tear of nostalgia !
  25. Interesting thread. Just off at a slight tangent, when the first revamped modern 4-stroke motocrossers emerged, the Yamaha YZ400 followed by the likes of the Honda CRF, one of the big selling points was supposedly low emissions. Turns out that they were also easier to ride for the average Joe compared to a fiery 2-stroke and so grew in popularity, that and the natural urge to want the 'latest thing'. The bike buying public didnt seem to be put off by the extra cost/weight/complexity of rebuilds and they soon became the main stream new bike. However, when fitted with an aftermarket silencer, to alledgedly unleash more power, boy were they loud. LOUD=SOUND POLLUTION=COMPLAINTS=LOSS OF LAND FOR RIDING. Hence the governing bodies ACU,FIM and the like are implementing a rolling sound reduction scheme, ACU 96Db for MX 2006&2007 reducing to 94Db for 2008 in line with FIM regs. The reality here is that most MX riders on a standard production machine would reduce their lap times by holding the throttle on longer, using the brakes harder and increasing their fitness/skill levels. Forget the louder after market silencer. Cant help but see some comparisons emerging here, as the trials manufacturers go 4-stroke, it is likely that sound issues will start to creep into trials as they have in motocross if the bikes are substantially louder or made louder than standard by their owners. Although the bark of a 4-stroke is music to our ears, not everyone else would agree. Time will tell I guess
