  1. Re the above; seems like a good plan. Substitute US with UK and forward a copy to Mr Brown in a brown envelope marked TOP SECRET-CONSERVATIVE MANIFESTO Before you can say "diversity through multi-culturism", it shall be done.

  3. Hmmm, looks like Rabies predictions cursed everyone he mentioned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Apart from the USA Did you put money on Josh Coppins to win the World Championship half way through the season too? Joking aside, watched it on Eurosport 2 and RV has set a new bench mark, a sure successor to RC's throne. Would have liked to see him go head to head with Carioli but looks like his front wheels were built up by the Marx brothers using spaghetti instead of spokes, an easy mistake to make when rushing to build up the bikes from a crate full of pasta. Unfortunately Paul Malin and Roger Harvey in the commentry box.............poleeeeeez. Bring back Jack Burnicle or in fact anyone else but those two. Great riders in their day but Jack is the man for the microphone.
  4. 2008 prices are now displayed on the Beta UK website. More queues outside Northern Rock tomorrow?
  5. Duuurgh, if he can't lift a trailer round there, he'll never lift a van round.
  6. A sad day indeed. Happy memories of ruining a clear cockpit canopy by holding it in place with a glue covered finger or trying to finalise the position of a roundel transfer on a wing and trying once to often to centralise it, only for it to split in two! However I still have a boxed, unmade Spitfire and a full array of paints squirreled away for a rainy day or Jezza jnr.
  7. Not entirely sure but something along the lines of the way the decision making was carried out, records of what was decided and why and by who, not re running the race after the storm had passed, declaring the winner although not running the correct amount of time for that to happen, stopping the race at the time they did in the first place. Some of the riders put in protests which starts the ball rolling as to exactly what happened and as you can imagine when sponsors and riders livelyhoods, manufacturers and individual championship standings are at stake, any enquiry needs to be thorough and decisions made at the time will be examined at length against the framework of the rule book. I assume some breachs of procedure were uncovered and fines were dished out for that but this is mere speculation on my part. Cue Rabie.....................
  8. The 2nd MX1 race was red flagged after about 5 laps as a few riders went down in a freak hail storm and medical staff were stretched to the limit. No points were awarded for the positions held at the point the race was stopped (more than 3 laps but less than 50% of race time) and the race was not restarted. If the race had gone over 50% of the race time the results would have stood. The race could have been re run at the discretion of the CofC. It wasn't. This had a knock on effect regarding championship standings. See rule 23 Motocross ACU handbook. I don't know the details of individual protests

  10. Anyone see the little trick Grimbo performed as he exited stage left on the back wheel after the final lap? Sure sign of a rider who had enjoyed his day.
  11. The reason that your chain seems shorter than before is that your new tensioner pad is thicker than the old worn one, effectively pushing up more on the chain and taking up more of the slack and that is where your 3mm has gone. If you can't get a ring spanner the correct size why not purchase a 23mm socket, available most tool stockists, Halfords if you are in the UK, you will need a ratchet or breaker bar to fit if you don't already have one. Other than that, if it makes the difference between riding tomorrow or not, you could use a monkey/pipe wrench or molegrips but this is a last resort/bodgers favourite. Buy the correct tools, you will use them many times in the future, buy the best you can afford.

    06 Beta Airbox

Nice one Addict, got it sorted now, for those who may experience a similar problem this is how I did it. Used a small blow torch on a low flame and carefully heated up the screw and stanchion until there was enough 'give' in the plastic of the airbox to carefully lever out the captive nut. The nut when out looks like a small dumbell, thin tube in the middle with two nuts either end. The hole left in the airbox shrunk back to be smaller than the size of the removed nut when it cooled down. I then put some araldite in the hole, warmed it up again carefully and pushed back in the captive nut.......job done. A heat gun would be better for this......... but somehow less exciting!

    06 Beta Airbox

Am having a problem removing one of the 4 small allen key headed screws that hold the airbox to the two metal stanchions that come off the back of the rear frame. At the moment I have the airbox off and one remaining stanchion attached by the one problem screw. I can feel the brass coloured captive nut underneath that is cast into the plastic of the airbox, rotating within its housing and because of this can't remove the screw. Problem is you can't seem to get to this captive nut from inside the airbox because it is pressed into the plastic. Anyone else had this happen and if so how did you solve it? I am having a tea break and rubbing my chin and saying "mmmmmmmmmmmmm" in an effort to generate the solution before I resort to brute force and molegrips. Any bright ideas gratefully received, any humorous replies also welcome...............................

  16. Liverpool Airport was shut for 8 hours yesterday due to a 'suspect vehicle'. A police spokesman said suspicions were raised as the vehicle was taxed, insured and the stereo was still in it.
  17. There will be a small amount of play, unlike a wheel bearing. The rollers should be shiny when you have cleaned it up, any dullness or pitting indicates wear. When my bike was 6 months old the steering became notchy, only noticeable when the bike was on a stand with the front wheel off the ground and bars rotated either way. When I investigated, the top bearing appeared quite dry and worn, rollers appeared dulled and there was quite a bit of movement, so much so that when I cleaned it in petrol it completely fell apart into its constituent parts, outer cage, rollers and inner race! I replaced it with a shiny new one with plenty of quality waterproof grease and the steering was back to silky smooth. Be careful when you re-assemble it as it is easy to over-tighten the whole thing. The flat round ring with the four cut-outs only needs to be finger tight at first, as when you tighten the large top nut, everything tightens up nicely. Take your time, if at first there is still some movement when you re-assemble, slacken the lock nut and tighten the flat ring with the cut outs a bit more, then re do the lock nut and check again until any lateral movement is removed. As was mentioned by someone else, they don't seem to be packed with grease too well from new, would recommend anyone with a Beta to strip it down sooner rather than later and check, easy to do and for peace of mind is well worth half an hours tinkering. Let us know how you get on.
  18. Awesome. Am thinking some spoke tensioning took place after................................after they got out of A&E
  19. Bilsteins, roller top mounts, big wing sump, rear turrets, capri tank, twin cam pedal box, twin 48s, quick rack, fly off handbrake, ooh suits you sir. Them were t'days. Bonnet up and everything accessible without double jointed wrists, Jeremy Beadles small hand or a lap-top. Once saw Ari Vartinan (spelling?) at a wet Olivers Mount going full chat up the hill in a works Manta 400, he hit a slight bump, the rear suspension unloaded and the car span 360' and he got it back. Only lifted slightly as the car pirouetted before giving it max lash again as if nothing had happened. Total looney but fantastic to watch, never travelled in a straight line unless he was going up an escalator.

  21. I feel sorry for the bike. For the first six months of its life its floating over everything like a magic carpet, for the next six months its pogo sticking itself into terra firma more often than a mole with agoraphobia. I blame the parents. Keep the stories/piccies coming Bazza, you are indestructable (but in case you are not, I recommend BUPA.)
  22. Over in the US of A, a lot more trials are televised and watched by millions as the drama unfolds and all the twists and turns are closely observed. Over here, it's more low key. In the USA, you will often get off clean, especially if you are well known, eg. OJ Simpson, Michael Jackson Over here the observing and judgment are more severe and fame nor fortune will help you, eg. Jeffrey Archer, Gary Glitter

    Swing Arm....

Maintenance is as much about prevention as reaction to something not being right. By the time there is movement in the bearings they will be worn. By cleaning, inspecting and re-packing with a good quality grease now, you will know for sure that everything is ok. If the bike is new to you and you already have part of it stripped down, it would be worth going through every aspect of the bike and checking the overall condition and that everything is greased that needs grease, wheel bearings, back brake lever bearing, all the suspension links, headstock etc. You will also then know that ALL the bolts on the bike are torqued up and nothing is going to come loose when you least expect it, as you launch off a rock step for example. It will also give you a better idea of how to strip something down if you have to do it other than in your garage or shed in ideal conditions when the bike is clean and in good lighting, ie out in the field. And you will know which tools you will need. Peace of mind and better resale value will be your rewards. Hope you enjoy your new bike.
  24. One to put down to experience, you will be laughing about it in a weeks time after you stop kicking yourself! It will not have too much of a detrimental effect on the half-life of your bike.
