it would be cheating to ride it as a twinshock in competition. Will the carb fit ok in an swm frame?

As you're from somerset you should be able to find a wet muddy slope or even sloping wet grassy field. Something that quick opening of the throttle will make the rear spin. Then practice away NOT using the clutch. make a steeper slope add in a twist or use higher gears just vary the practice and before long you should get some kid of relationship between right hand and traction.

What carb? Clean carb and set float level and new plug as all stated above.

The 2016 is a more rider friendly bike. back in the 02 to 05 period the 250's were prefered by the French experts as they were zippier than the 290. I think the current bike is a softer version than the 2015.
