Has anybody tried the two map programmable ignition on the standard 4rt and what sort of difference it makes to the engine response and it's charecteristics. Does one setting make it docile and the other more snappy etc? Thanks in advance

Morning mk1, if you are off to Charlton's this weekend it might be an idea to go on Saturday, as on Sunday Guisborough are holding a centre trial there and no practising is allowed until the trial is over. Just thought might save you a wasted journey. Good luck with the restoration and keep the pics coming.

I think people have a good idea who it is but are not prepared to go on a witch hunt. My own personal opinion is that the Montesa 4RT forum over the last few month's has become a bit excessive with dealer recommendations.

Just had a look at the spares for the 07 Sherco's and there are four different base gasket's listed. The standard one and three alternatives with various thicknesses. My 04 290 is geared at 10/42 as standard from factory. I have never felt any need to go lower than 10 on the gearbox sprocket. Once tried an 11 on front to raise the gearing but was too much of a beast so went back to a 10. Mainly use first and second in sections, and third and fourth on hillclimbs and across the moors. Normally keep fifth for road use, hope this helps.

I think it is to do with driving licence ages. I think it is 17 and yes your bike needs registering as there is a small amount of roadwork and road crossings.

I personally don't mind hard trials and would happily ride one route type trials, so long as the sections are not dangerous. Perhaps the guys at the top end would start to moan though that the sections were not challenging enough for them. This topic has highlighted just what a difficult job a clerk of the course has in setting out sections for experts and clubmen alike.

Cota, this is how trials used to be, I remember my second trial as a 15 year old riding a Honda Tl125 riding the same sections as Nigel Birkett and Rob Edwards. No alternative routes back then, I think I fived every section apart from the last one on the first lap Second lap I managed five threes and was thrilled to finish. Did it improve my riding, NO, I'm now 44 and still crap Apologies Perce did n't mean to open a debate about the severity of the trial.

Perce, when you say clubmen, are you refering to the typical green course rider?

Could n't ride the Richmond trial at Crackpot last sunday due to work, however noticed in the results on their website that there did n't appear to be the clubman class as usual. Any reason for this as this is normally a fantastic trial for the clubman.

Agree with Betarev3, walk away and go and buy a good 03 or 04. If you have had two visits and still hav nt bought it then trust your instincts about the engine and look elsewere. If you still want this bike then, perhaps as mentioned before, remove the flywheel cover and see if there is any freeplay in the main bearings by trying to move the flywheel up and down. If good the flywheel should be rock solid, any freeplay then it is new bearings and an engine overhaul job, which is not the ideal way to restart your trials riding. By the time you have overhauled this engine the money spent could have bought you a good 03 or 04 perhaps Good Luck.!

Perhaps might be worth giving Silkolene a call, then you know for sure as to dilute it or not.

Could you tell me the reason for using the shorter swinging arm. I have noticed this mod mentioned before but nobody explains the theory for actually carrying it out. Is it for an expert only type of bike or is it beneficial to us mere plodders too. Thanks in advance.
