Guys, I started a thread asking about cleaning the tailpipe and got side tracked a bit. Can anyone look at these photos for me and see if that intake side port opening looks damaged or modified or normal? in some way? It looks to me that one side of the opening is lower than the other, and somehow it might have been caused by someone in there with a grinder? The right side of the image is much shinier than the left side as well, so I don't know why that would be the case. All I did was wash the whole jug with water and a solvent and I did not scrub this area on the right any more than I did on the left side. So something has been in there either with a lot…

  3. Which Oil is best for these older motors? Currently using Castrol TTS, but is it too good? Mixing at 50:1..........is this about right or could I go up to 60 or 70 :1 on a better oil. Seemed to run a bit smoky @ 50:1 Also what's the best gearing set-up - Rear is currently on a 48t. However I seem to remember somebody mentioning 9/51t or was I imagining it??

Hello All, This is my first post on this forum so please bear with me. I have a74 ty250a that I am currently restoring. I am an automotive technician of 6 years and have my basics covered but this is really my first embarkation into the world of motorcycle mechanics. I have the cases split and had the crank assembly professionally rebuilt and I'm looking to re-assemble and having a hard time with the crank. As far as I can tell the crank will have to be pressed into the bearing, correct? I assume a pipe approximately equal to the inner race of the crank bearing should be used to support the case half and the crank should be pressed in one side first. What would I use …

Hi, I am just getting back into trials riding I had a 348 cota about 16 years ago and have just bought a 1984 TY250. I know its not a twin shock but I hope someone here can help. I am trying to restore it to as near as new condition as I can but that ae a few issues the triangular brackets the bolt from the cylinder head to the frame are missing, if you have one can anyone please draw me a diagram with dimensions cheers. And then there’s the seat tank combo, with the front tank bolt in place and the rear seat locators popped in the two parts don’t match up very well, it looks like they are about 50mm too far apart. I can’t make any sense of this has anyone any ideas? Reg…

Looking for an answer, I have a TY250 with engine serial number consisting of a "2 digit number" followed by an "arrow". The number is appears stamped in with a flat screw driver or punch. The vertical lines under the number look original, I have another engine to compare it to. Does this mean the case was replaced with a spare part? Has anyone seen this type of numbering?

Just ordered a Sammy Miller seat tank replacement for my TY250. Are there any adjustments that need to be made to fit or is it a straight bolt on swap? What would be the best way to store the old tank to keep it from rusting up inside?

Hi there, Just been given the above from a neighbours garage & would be grateful for a few hints.I have sent off for manual but would like to get a little further without waiting for it to arrive. Managed to get motor running after thoroughly cleaning out carb - bike hadn't run for over 10 yrs - but would be grateful for any info on carb settings. Any clues relating to the 4 position ignition key - what does each do? Also what is spec. & amount of gearbox oil required? Any info gratefully received.

Good evening gents I am just resolving a few minor issue's with my TY250 twin shock that I have been restoring over the past few months and I am in the lucky postion to have a spare bike albiet in bits sitting in the garage. I have been thinking about what to do with this bike as it needs a complete restoration and instead of restoring or breaking it I would like to do something differant and build something that is suitable for a bit of road work and green laning, so I am considering going along the lines of putting a four stroke engine into a ty250 Frame, Possibly a 400 cc single pherhaps a XT400 engine. I do seem to recall reading about a French chap who has done so…

I have finished my TY Majesty (well finished mark 0.5, still lots of mods to carry out) and am able to ride trials with it, problem I have is that I want to ride some trials that have road use, I bought the frame from Majesty yamaha as a new mini majesty godden built frame and have not been able to get a dating certificate from the supplier (in spite of being one and having made several requests), anyone any ideas, should I ring shirty or would that be a waste of time ? any help much appreciated asap as I would like to ride the Richmond clubs two day blue bar trial in May. (ps will post picture if someone tells me how)

Hey Guy's I'm looking at rebuilding the topend of my o'l ty250,just a question ( remember that I'm not a mechanic ) The top of the piston has two marks stamped on it : an arrow that points to the exhaust which obviously shows position of the piston and the other mark is a small > any idea what this indicates ,oversized piston maybe ? I bought this bike a couple of years ago and until now have never had it apart ,the previous owner did'nt know much about the bike either; other than he thought that it may have been punched out at some point ... All ideas and suggestions on my little project would be greatly appreciated Thanks M_lo

Rebuilding a TY 250 and have found that it has the wrong flywheel. It is way light. I was going to machine a weight to press on but I need to know about how much more weight I need to add. If anyone knows what the stock flywheel should weigh or has a stock one to get rid of I would like to know. Thanks Aaron
