I have changed the carb on my Montesa 123 for a Mikuni with a main jet of 190. The exhaust is now leaking black oily gunge, is this because the jet is too big or is it something else. The plug is a NGK B6ES. Cheers John

The bearing in the clutch basket needs changing so I have removed the clutch basket from the bike but I am unable to strip the clutch down any further. Does anyone know what the tool used to compress the clutch to enable the pins to be removed looks like? I have had a tentative go using a vice but I do not want to damage anything. Cheers John

I have a couple questions with regards to the above. I am at the point of putting the transmission into the engine cases. When locating the selector drum should it be in neutral or a specific gear and how do I tell if it's in the correctly selected gear? Cheers John

I have managed to strip down the Marzocchi rear shocks on my bike. Does anyone know if spares (O rings etc) are available and what weight and quantity of oil I should use. Cheers

Not many of these to see these days but I have one that is misbehaving. Practicing a few weeks ago I lost the ability to shift gears. Didn't get banged. Lever resisting up a down movement on the spring but no selection. Thought the problem would be the locknut on the eccentric cam coming loose. But not the problem. Have stripped the mechanism in the primary case. Nothing seized and no broken springs. Moving through the range of adjustment allows a setting that will allow going up the box or down but not both. All gears select easily using the square 8mm peg. Timing marks lining up correctly. No noises from gearbox so I think it's the mechanism in the primary case. Any tri…

Hi After reading so much on this subject am I correct in thinking if I was to run my 1980 349 on one of the following popular full & semi Synthetics I would be ball park ok? Castrol Power 1 full synthetic at 50: 1 Castrol A747 semi synthetic (with Castor) at 40:1 My preference would be to go semi for the standing time protection it has over a full Synthetic on internals but am I reading into things to much? Anyone ran either of the above long term and would like to give the benefit of their experiences? Advice please Thanks

If this works, you should be looking at it. This one is really special. Lot's of carving to try and drop the weight.

UCDQ (Uncle Charlie Dumb Question) #26. This is what happens when I start treading new turf... My project Cota has an incorrect, modern-looking fork brace. Judging by the pictures I've seen, there was no fork brace on this model. Is there any benefit to having one? One of the reasons I ask is because it takes the place of fender stays, so the fender only attaches in the middle. I'm considering alloy fenders (for their superior price, durability and ease of installation, of course) and I'm curious if it's OK to just support them in the middle like this.

This is a big bummer, I think. Broken kick shaft. Between the 2 splines where the kicker arm goes on, there is a hole through the shaft making it very weak. Is this factory, or a cob job by a previous hammer-and-tongs man to secure a stripped shifter? Either way, the end of the shaft snapped off. Does this mean split the cases to install a new shaft? Is a new shaft even available? I wonder how the new girlfriend feels about engines on the kitchen table....

My swingarm looks bent in where the axle goes through, and the axle was showing quite a few threads outside of the nut after it's tightened down. The right side plate where the axle goes through is definitle at an angle to the tubular part. I'm wondering if I have the correct spacers. Could anybody out there give me some measurements? Axle length? Swingarm width (at axle)? Spacer width?

If you were offered a couple of cheap montesa's locally, one a 247 the other a 349, which one would you buy? Both similar price and condition ie reasonable but not mint. I've never owned a Montesa and I just fancy trying a few twinshock events on one. Any opinions on which one to go for or should I just forget it? I'm not short of bikes to ride but you know how it is!
