Pre-65 Bikes

  1. Started by beamish owners club,

I have a C15, a B40 and a Tiger Cub that all need to have the carb moved further from the engine to help stop fuel evaporation (or something like that!). Does anyone have any idea where to buy such an animal?

  2. Started by chappo,

Guys, Got a centre casing on my Cub that’s past it’s sell buy date. Im looking for a replacement, the replacement I’ve found has the same E4087 number as mine , but mine is stamped underneath that as AM 1, the replacement is AM 2. They look identical but that’s from a comparison of photos , not in person. Will the casings be the same, I’m assuming the AM number is probably a casting batch and the part number is the E4087. Thanks.

I have an Ariel that since the engine was rebuilt many moons ago run on castrol R. It has to come out for a last minute trial on Sunday and I have no Castrol, will it harm it to just mix whats left in the oil tank with a normal 10/40, or do I need to drain it all out, or does it need to flushed / cleaned throughout before I add another type of OIL. I am sure I read somewhere that it could damage the engine if care wasn t taken when changing from Castrol R. Thanks.

Hi Guys. Need some advice. I'm going to use the Electrex CDI unit on my Cub. I'd like to use the earlier pre points in the side sidecover. After taking out all the non used stuff (points plate, points and advance unit) what will I have to do besides putting the earlier side cover on. Thanks in advance.

I want to change the fork oil in the Cerianis fitted to my Cub They have 35mm dia stanchions and are around 31" long spindle to fork tops unloaded What sort of volume and weight oil should I use as a starter. The oil that's in is red so I'm guessing it's ATF.

Trying to re-furbish a set of Ceriani type forks, probably from a Greeves Griffon.Does anyone know the correct spring length and width? Can new ones be bought anywhere? What weight and quantity of fork oil should be used? Any help would be appreciated Thanks Geoff

I'm looking for a really good chain for the project HT5 I'm building, I'm using a 520 chain so there should be few options out there. What do you recommend?

  9. Started by betabantam,

I ride a bantam that has a 428 chain fitted and have a cub with a 420 fitted. Whilst riding these in trials i have had people comment on 'you don't need a 428 they run better with a 420 and vice versa when running the cub with 420. I only use these sizes as that is what the bike come with. I am now replacing the Bantam chain and sprockets, is there a noticeable difference n performance or chain/ sprocket life between 420 and 428?

  10. Started by hencam,

Hi all, i am hoping to return to riding a C15 or 2! one in modified WD frame and one in a Drayton if i can raise the pennies! anyway i am currently building the motors at present, my question is what size chain do people use. 428 or 520, i always used 520 when riding 10 to 15 years ago. one bike will have cub hubs, the other probably Bultaco. Both engines are C15G they will be running B40 WD gearboxes. i have no sprockets or chain bought yet, so it makes no difference £££ wise. just wondered what everyone uses and why if they have a preference. all suggestions gratefully received.

  11. Started by old trials fanatic,

OK took the B40 for it's first run today up at Burrycliffe. Didnt enter as this was the first time the bike has actually moved under it's own power, well if you dont count 20 yds down the drive, and as of 10:00 last night i had just finished the airfilter. So had a little ride around before the trial, observed a section to help out, then had a little ride after. Actually i was quite surprised as it wasnt that bad all things considered, oil leak from the front fork seals also the rocker spindles and chain case but nothing some silicone wont cure. The chain did jump off once however and after talking to a couple of guys with Faber framed B40's they said the chain tens…

  12. Hi need to replace the chain and sprockets on the James. Now it's been running on a 428 chain but i've seen some on a 520. Same with cubs now most people seem to run a 420 on the cub but it seems a bit light duty to me. So what does the panel think about chain sizes? i know sprockets are a personal choice but i was wondering what people are fitting to their Pre65 bikes. twinshock is easy as most of the factory details are pretty good anyway so stick with them but the Pre65 bikes are all so modified nowadays i was just wondering what you have fitted to your Cub, C15, B40, James, Bantam etc etc etc

tired of hitting the wrong lever on the cub after riding my beta . the cure would seem to be moving the brake lever over to the right, and using a cable instead of brake rod. anyone experience of this( did don smith do it on Greeves, was it done on bultacos'?) if so what should it look like or have you a picture. or can you reference or link a picture cheers yours in the garage..TS

  14. Started by solvent3,

Hi as the title says i would like to change my brake pedal from the current LHS to the RHS on my FB. My other bike is RHS brake and i feel much more comfortable and balanced this way. so im planning on running a cable through from the RHS to get back to the LHS to operate it. Theres a picture of Norman Shepherd on the yorkshire site members photo and he has this setup, but i just wondered what the setup was like on the opposite side of the bike. the plan is to maybe weld a block on LHS at rear, tap it, and then use a cable stop adjuster like you get in the universal clutch/brake cable kits. Anyone have any ideas or guidance what to do or more importantly not to do? t…

  16. I just got my spare Cub frame from the attic to fit some strengthening plates. Before I do, is there a recognised way to steepen the steering head angle and is this a worthwhile mod? Cutting the head casting looks a bit dodgy but extending the top tube and/or shortening the down tube looks possible. Although I wouldn't have a clue by how much! I know I've got it up for sale but I find it hard to resist building things in the shed and feel another project comming on!

  19. Hi, Can I encourage everybody to go along to the classic trials bike exhibition at Stonleigh at the weekend. I know that Charlie Prescott and Mick Andrews and many others have worked their "thingies" of to make this happen. Our sport during the 60's and 70's was a source of inspiration to many people, standard bikes and parts were modified into successful trials bikes, and many of these bikes will be there at Stonleigh. Look forward to seeing you there. pat.
