Pre-65 Bikes

  1. Started by brucey,

Hi, I am just building the engine for my Trials Cub Project. I am fitting a PVL ignition which I purchased second hand about a year ago. I'm sure Alan Whitton said set the timing 5mm BTDC but the guy who sold me the ignition said 2.0 - 2.5mm BTDC. I'm running a +40" 7:1 piston and 'R' Cam in a Square barrel, side points engine. I know Alan uses a higher compression Kawasaki piston (I've got one but couldn't bear to bore a perfictly good barrel). I can just about get both timings but would like to set the correct timing in the middle of my adjustment. I'll be running the engine on a Mikuni VM22 (26mm) pit bike carb if it makes any difference to the timing as I belie…

Hi, I am just finishing a Tiger cub trials project and would appreciate any advice on the rear sprocket. The current chain is a 520 and I see from the manuals and most postings that a 420 is the standard size. The 520 clears everything and I would like to stay with this if possible as it will be stronger and will cope with the awesome power of the 275cc upgrade on it...... Joking, the power is still not arm-wrenching but it does sound excellent! ;o) All the sprockets I can find on the interweb are 420, can anyone advise on where to go for a 520? Best Regards

  3. Started by mik60ish,

Has anyone tried or any knowledge of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TIGER-CUB-BANTAM-OVE...6QQcmdZViewItem As it would be good to have a rear brake that works on my Cub! Or is it me can't seem to get the same purchase with my left foot brake, Iv'e tried getting new linings fitted oversize different compound etc, but rather than ordering these shoes from the UK getting them sent to NZ only to find they don't work either.

Hi everyone, just wondering about the bearing retainer with the peg spanner holes.....is it normal right hand thread or left hand? As the holes for the pegs is only 1/8 inch, don't want to be smacking things the wrong direction, and at the moment it not movnig in either direction. Thanks foe any advice.

  5. Started by brucey,

I have recently fitted new UPB PVL type electronic ignition and UPB Delorto Carb to my cub in an attempt to make it run better. I consider these good pieces of kit and already set up to run with my engine. (Bob is very helpful). The engine currently oils plugs and appears to run rich. It dies when the throttle is opened quickly and will not rev above 1/2 throttle. The symptoms get a bit better each time a new plug is fitted but not great. I didn't rebore the barrel when I built it as it seemed o.k. I fitted a good standard piston with new rings (all at +40"). This is my 1st engine build. It seemed to run o.k once the rings bedded in but has got proressivly worse…

  7. Would someone who has fitted a Sammy Miller silent block conversion to a Tiger Cub please explain to me how it works. It seems to consist of 2 silent block bushes that locate into the swinging arm and a spacer for the frame but what prevents side to side movement? Is the spacer an interference fit into the frame ?

  9. Hello, I wish to convert my standard Cub swinging arm, so that it is suitable for a 4.00 rear trials tyre. I have been told that I need to lenghten the arm by one inch, and widen it by one inch. I need to know how and where to cut, and how to weld it all back up. Has anyone got pictures, etc, of the details ? Thanks in advance.

  10. Can anyone tell if they know of a supplier who sells the above as i want to convert my ball bearing type to taper bearings. cheers all

Hi All I was thinking of making a Tiger Cub Top Tube Oil Tank for my trials Cub I did contact Sammy Miller for a price to ship to New Zealand, but didn't get a reply so has anyone made one themselves or if some one could post a simple diagram of the layout of an oil tank which I could adapt to suit my Cub Cheers Mike

  12. Disregarding an aftermarket frame, what mods have you done to your cub in order to improve competitiveness?

Looking for a little guidance and this would seem the place to be, I have recently bought a rough Tiger cub with the notion of humiliating myself in some pre 65 trials. However the more I look into this the more difficult it seems to be to know what to options to take in setting it up. The first hurdle was actually easier than anticipated, I started it at the weekend and the engine and gearbox seem okay. I bought a 4.00 trials tyre to check if it would fit and seems okay in what I believe is the wider swinging arm except for the chain running very, very close to the tyre. I think I will try and mover the engine over a few mm and I also notice that there is a front sprocke…

Tight clutch plates I am trying to replace my clutch plates and after fitting, new clutch plates the clutch drags. The new clutch plates are very tight! do I need to file them down on the 3 corners ? of the sqaure lugs or just the sides. When I fitted them with the clutch hot they slid in OK. But when cold were tight. Will I damage the plates by filing them?. Are there any clutch advice sites anywere, have looked on Google no luck.

WOW, the sun was shining.. no honest really shining, people were taking their coats off at one point. Great Trial , not much water in the burns and with some sections having been eased ( beside the glencoe road) scores should be a lump lower than last years Len Hutty, Tony Calvert, Carlos Casas Alan Wright all riding neat and tidy whilst younger Drommet was nursing a sick Cotton ( but under dads advice 'not through sections') Peter Gaunt dropped a slack 5 on section 4 as he was first to clean the section only to ride out of the section missing the 'ends' cards completely! couple of questions though.. spanish and japanese bikes competing, i had to cast an eye over the…

Hi Guy's. I see that Woody has his C15 for sale on e-Bay. This bike has the power in a C15 that everyone is looking for, I am currently trying to build an engine that is simular. It is a shame, I have now got most of the parts together! Or I would be bidding on Woody's bike. So if you are intrested in a bike that wins trials! I would take a look at this before it is to late? You only have four days. Regards Charlie.

Hi Guy's, This is the frame I have just finished to take our Tiger Cub engine. It is based on the design of Pat Slinn's BSA frame that he built in the competition department in 1964. Here are the pics at last, sorry for the wait. Regards Charlie.

i ve aquired a c10 that is running a 6v battery on total loss, it'll do a single venue trial on a charge no problem. i want to do road trials on it this year though, most of the PJ1 series , a couple of Miller rounds and a LDT so.. would i gain anything by changing to 12v and for a bit of longevity for the road trials should i if i opt for more APH and if so how much.. ?

  20. Hi, I've inherited a very late TR20 (TR20 18**) that had been put in the back of a garage for 50 years, and then my father took it on. He unfortunately passed away having started the work and I need some help has I have no reference photos. Some detail photos all over of an original/known good restoration of one of the later bikes would be extremely helpful. There have been some mods done over the years, and I just need to work out which of those was by the previous owner, and which by the factory. In particular, How the original style footpegs are mounted - I believe I have the correct brackets and pegs, but I can't make them work. T…
