Aircooled Monoshocks

  1. Started by madcr500,

Hi all. Just wondering what year they stopped making twinshocks and started making aircooled mono's. Or did the 2 types overlap for a while?

Hi,I have recently bought a TY250 mono as an introduction into motorcycle trials, I decided to rebuild the bike from scratch and upon stripping the engine it has thrown up some interesting modifications which I hope someone could enlighten me on. The piston is I've been told is an IT 175 at 66.5mm diameter, the rod is different, Its a 214 but possibly same length as standard. The barrel is 10mm shorter than standard and the crank throw is shorter at around 63.5 in length. There seems to be quite a decent porting job in the barrel as well. It also has a lightened flywheel. The frame no is 15. Someone told me this is an early conversion by John Shirt to build a more revvy m…

Hi Guys, I was wondering if anyone has any answers for stopping the pinging or minimising it on my TY250. The motor is fresh and unmodified but it pings it head off. I beleive the original pistons had dishes in the crown ( I could be wrong) but my piston is flat. I'm using 95 octane fuel mixed at 50:1. I have tried raising the needle which improved it a little but its still doing it. I know some peoples answer will be to run it on Avgas but this is really not an option I want to do, as it is road registered and I fill it up at the servo sometimes. I have heard that removing the head gasket to reduce the amount of squish greatly reduces the pinging has anyone who has…

Just bought a 1989 gas gas 250, it needs a bit of tlc but not sure where to get them, I need fork seals and the front brake caliper is seized so may need a new one ( brembo), also general items such as air filter, brake pads and also is there a parts of service manual out there for this type of bike. Any help would be great, tried main gas gas dealer but dont seem interested.Anton

Apologies for another which bike question but as most of the bikes are now nearly at least 20 years old it's a bit difficult to go out and have a go on all of them. I ride as many of the traditional trials championsip as I can on my modern bike, but as I am a long way off 40 I am restricted to a few rounds. I really enjoy the series so am thinking of getting an air cooled mono to have a go at the rest of the series. Common sense says I should go for a pinky, but are they really as competitive as one of the last aircooled monos with front and rear discs etc like a Fantic 245. I used to have a 245 and struggled for grip but I thought something like a 205 would be a g…

I have a 92 pinky mono, the rim on the rear wheel is badly corroded on the inside, as Z spokes are hard to get I want to get another wheel but with traditional spokes. Talon have their own TY hubs(using trad spokes) and could build a wheel for me, the problem is that they are unsure if it would fit the pinky. Are TY wheels interchangeable regardless of whether it's an old TY hub or a new pinky hub? thanks.

Some purists might be outraged by such a project. Normally I too find engine swaps to be a distasteful subject, but... after several years trying to keep from doing this, I just came home from work one day and started in on it. I guess the winter weather has effected my judgement. The front subframe has been welded together out of alloy strap material from the hardware store, and short chunks of renthall handlebar. It's very satisfying to be able to make something like that, finally having a tig welder to play with. The project has a long way to go, but should prove to be a fun ride and a great conversation starter. Also perhaps a handy excuse for lackluster finishes i…

can anyone help me with this? when i apply the front brake sometimes the lever comes right back to the grip other times its fine? when i apply the front brake fully the disc moves slightly sideways? this is the point where the brake lever pulls all the way to the handlebar grip! also it moves slightly when pushed and pulled by hand as in floating? the bolts that secure the disc dont tighten fully right down so theres slight play in the disc bolt mounting holes is this normal? thanks for your replys in advance! Scotty
