  1. Sorry guys to start the heated debate. I really liked my TY175 and TY250R and the fact that they were good clubman's bikes............which were built like Swiss watches in terms of reliability. However my 2004 Montesa 315R was ok but was a 'pain in the a**e' in terms of carburation.........never caburated the same way twice. The TYZ maybe ugly but as they say.....'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' and I reckon it looks ok and is well put together and with.... by all accounts........ a superb motor. It may not steer like a Gasser........but for a Clubman/Inter does it really matter? I prefer a bike that's well engineered and reliable to fragile and needs a spanner to it midweek.........so you can ride it at a weekend. Does Birkett still make the NJB TYZ variants?
  2. What are the main differences between the 2 bikes ?? In terms of - Handling Finding grip Riding position Likes/Dislikes Is the Yamaha better built than the Scorpa Are the motors exactly the same in terms of power/porting Was the TYZ a dog or is still a good bike today I've never ridden either, just like the look of the TYZ TYZ Frame looks as if it shares some similarities with the later Cota 315R ......Does it?? Can you still find TYZ's in good nick or are they flogged to death like most TY250 mono's Were they built between 92-96 or did they go later to 98 Just wondering.........????
  3. Has anybody told drivers of Merc Sprinters..................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  4. With Domino slow action throttles............is it the black or white throttle tubes??? White Bros gave me a black tubed one, is this correct??
  5. Anybdy got a an old pair of Honda TLR200 Reflex or 200R Black Steel Handlebars lying about in the garage or workshop. Must be straight and undamaged, paint condition/slight rust etc not important. Send my a PM and we'll sort out a price........ TIA
  6. I faxed John Shirt last year, with Frame no. details of my Godden framed Majesty. He replied back, same day with confirmation of date of production and how/what/why the frame no. meant ( to the uninformed.....me). Very comprehensive.........superb service .......!!
  7. Just a tip, if the bike is an early Majesty (with a modified yamaha frame) the the engine numbers should match, as on standard TY's and all early Yamaha's. The later Godden framed Majesty had a standard Yamaha engine number but obviously JShirt gave them his own frame no's. Might have had an engine swap, maybe.
  8. Not sure about factory options on dirt bikes, however on BMW Roadbikes you can order factory options as follows - Different Screens Pannier mounts ABS Brakes Paint schemes Tyre choices Electronically adjustable suspension at the press of a button Radio/CD players Different gearbox ratio's Additional driving lights. On bikes - BMW are at the fore-front of factory options in biking and virtually every new bike is'built to order' on a 3 month factory waiting time. Don't expect to go into the dealer today and get a new bike for this Sat...most are pre-sold. The benefits are happy owners getting what they want, the factory knows in advance what to produce, so they don't end up with a surplus of unsold stock to unload onto the market (checkout Triumph,Yam and Honda roadbikes), which keeps residual values higher than other marques. After taking delivery of their new steed, most owners then fit aftermarket parts from numerous sources, just like Trials riders.............
  9. Try NFU Mutual Insurance. They have agents in all local towns nationwide. They will insure vans on a private car policy and used for domestic use only (like us as private users, not commercial users). I have my Toyota Powervan insured with them. They give good discounts and all is handled by the local agent, so you get face to face service. Also if the insured van (or a car) is less than 2 years old (from date of first registration) they do a 'new for old' replacement, if it's written off as a total loss. Therefore write off a 22 month old vehicle and you get a brand new 54/05 plate model of similar type & spec.............not many insurers do that!!
  10. And I thought Forums were about CONVERSATION !!!!!!!
  11. TY175 Went into Acklams @ Harrogate (Beta & Yamaha) to pick up some New Yam parts that I'd ordered. I'd requested a brake lever arm for the rear wheel back plate (a 434 TY250 or TY175 part) The original item from 20 years ago was a heavy cast steel item, that corroded etc and weighed a proverbial ton in comparison to today's item. For the 21st Century Yamaha have produced an identically shaped offset rear brake lever in guess.........Cast ALUMINIUM. Beautifully crafted and shaped, plus in comparison to the crappy steel item.......it's a light as a feather. Why......... oh why didn't they make items like this in the heyday of Twinshock TY's.............if more of the items were crafted in alloy like these front & rear brake plate levers, sidestand, fork brace (with lightweight m/guard), chainguard, rear brake pedal.............then the bike would have been a whole lot lighter. Perhaps another case of .................if we knew then...........what we know now.............as they say hindsight's a wonderful thing!!!!!!
  12. Sounds about right .............some of the older bikes always looked like farm machinery refugees.
  13. Small world............ I grew up living about 150yds from Tony Rew's farm in Newton Abbot and he was a mean rider in the 70's & 80's and can still muster it, no doubt. He could do things on a Bulto we could only marvel at. He kept most of his older bikes, as he updated and used the older ones like the Bultaco's for rounding up his Dairy Cows, on an afternoon. Bet there's quite a collection of his now, gathering dust. Last saw him compete on a Fantic 303 in mid 80's
  14. Try Granby Motors @ Ilkeston Derby, they have a lot of stuff, ask for Simon in parts Or Webbs Yamaha in Lincoln, ask for Steve in parts Sorry you'll have to look up Tel numbers Or Motoward on 01403 823222 or 01883 330049 They all have a lot of Yamaha parts Or Keith @ Motolink on 01526 344443 , he specialises in old Yamaha IT's and YZ's and surely will have what you want Or if no joy try Jim Patch on 01963 364411 or finally Govnor's Bridge - on 01827 712906 That's exhausted my contacts for new old Yamaha spares Looked in my NOS spares and haven't got what you want in my supplies on the YZ/IT front..........plenty of 175 & 465 piston kits & stuff, but no 250 .......sod's law
  15. How much for a pair? Carly
  16. BJ.......... Let's have a couple of close-up pics then !!
  17. Following a recommendation I'm after some 6" High Rise Alloy Trials Bars. Who sells them in the UK?? Names & no's would be good TIA
  18. Which Oil is best for these older motors? Currently using Castrol TTS, but is it too good? Mixing at 50:1..........is this about right or could I go up to 60 or 70 :1 on a better oil. Seemed to run a bit smoky @ 50:1 Also what's the best gearing set-up - Rear is currently on a 48t. However I seem to remember somebody mentioning 9/51t or was I imagining it??
  19. Where was that Round staged in 1982?? Was it West of England or up in Yorkshire?? Any chance of a copy............willing to pay your costs & time???
  20. That the 315R they had as a comparison would blast to the top of a long, steep snotty climb without any fuss or effort and the 4RT struggled to get halfway up on 4 attempts and just wouldn't power up it at all...... They gave up trying to fire the 4RT up it
  21. Hope it's not as serious as the BMW scenario with their new K1200S Superbike, which was launched last Sept/Oct and within 10 days BMW AG ordered dealers to stop anybody riding the demo bikes......... Reason - Faulty Camshafts, not being hardened properly by a 3rd Party manufacturer. Solution - re-crate all bikes back up and send all worldwide supplies back to Germany for re-assembly ..............very costly !!!!!! Postpone re-launch until sometime in 2005..................a Marketing nightmare Hope the 4RT doesn't suffer the same fate............however Honda doesn't always get it right............the new STX1300 Pan European Tourer had to have some dramatic modifications Post - launch to sump and frame/engine mounts
