  1. Alas, the points cam is part of the flywheel so you can't set the gap with the flywheel off - you have to fiddle about through the slot in the outer face of the flywheel.
  2. I don't see what registering bikes not affected by the upcoming type approval regs would have to do with it but do feel that a letter to the Committee to enable intercession with government (the ACU not being one of the bodies contacted by government) surely warrants a response?
  3. Over two months after the ACU T&E committee were alerted to this, still silence.
  4. I would guess that RYP USA website will hsve all the info you need to strip a Sherco motor.
  5. Rather than have two lots, one for the twinshock and one for the Beta, I ended up running 50:1 in the Beta witth no oil problems. In fact I'm not sure the slightly weaker mixture resulting didn't improve the running.
  6. Running with the "clip" on the inside always used to be standard practice on a trials bike to prevent the horseshoe catching on anything and coming undone. It still is with me but the brake pedal pivot bolt on the Beta does tend to catch the chain, even at that. You need to keep the bolt tight.
  7. People like to drain the carb without removing it to prevent problems with modern petrol left for too long. What it hits is of no concern.
  8. More helpfully, perhaps, I don't think you'll find much with a lower viscosity than ATF. However I think it has been reported that use of ATF can cause the plates to swell causing the drag.
  9. Can't remember when I last saw legal goggles in a shop. Just don't wear any? For the speed/distance involved you should survive. Or wear sunspecs, to which the rules do not apply. Not sure if this would be the case with safety specs.
  10. Apart from what's been said, if you don't do the full distance then you are not exposing your bike to the full chance of something happening and not finishing. While they may no longer be formally called reliability trials my feeling is that it's cheating on those grounds, in that all machines should cover the same distance. Let alone missing out on some riding, trials are short enough as it is these days.
  11. A recording always sounds worse than the real thing so it's hard to tell.
  12. Most folk just use a wooden frame to support the wheel and use tie downs. Posh blokes might use this sort of thing Support
  13. Just scrounge a ball bearing and cut a ball pen spring to suit? It's not too critical.
  14. Can't help but think that, rather than that monstrosity, it would be much better all round if they just fitted a proper mudguard.
  15. The wear on the shaft of my Beta was fairly visible, as I recall, can't remember if it could be felt with a fingernail for example. But your dealer said it seemed OK and he has seen it, I haven't.
  16. That sounds about right. Fill to just above the top of the fins usually. If you fill to the neck it will spit out the excess and find its own level.
  17. Nubsey will lend you his grandson to stick his finger up the plug cap to test for current☺
  18. To make it easier to fit just one in the (early) Berlingo trapezeartist I made an infill for the footwell so that the wheel does not drop in, thus the bike can sit diagonally with no lifting of the wheel required to get it out. Much easier on your back. To fit two you put the second bike in back wheel first and turn the front across towards the other bike. It is a squeeze but much easier the second time and you can still carry a passenger. You might find it easier if you compress the forks with a strap.
  19. I'd suggest Clarky is the man to speak to 2 dead 4RTs , is it possible to contact via the Tube?
  20. I'd go with checking the Woodruff key. If the flywheel has moved sufficiently then the timing will be so far out that you won't get a spark. Easy job, if you have the tools of course.
  21. As it separates oil from water then potentially yes, but the water is at much higher pressure so more likely to migrate to oil
  22. Most likely the shaft is worn where the seal rubs.
  23. I doubt whether mountain bike riders have that perception, of trials certainly, the mountainbike mags have columns to show off photos of one's injuries so they don't seem averse to danger. Plus, they know that the pros use trials or motocross bikes for training purposes. The last published photo of a trials "injury" I can recall was Malcolm Rathmell's gloveless hands after the Scott, which was a wee while ago. And I wouldn't want all the razamatazz at a local trial. Just running the basic events in a year stretches most club's resources ie it's the same few people putting in the effort. Ironically enough, a few guys up here who disappeared to mountain bike competition twenty years ago (it was not feasible to do both at a good level) seem to have come back to trials.
  24. Actually Ross, you're not right there. The average trials rider would faint at the level of entry fee for even a low level mountain bike event. I suppose all that piped music and other extraneous nonsense has to be paid for somehow.
