  1. a couple of observations ( no pun intended..) why not have both front and rear brakes lever operated from the bars thus opening up to the after market/oe mtb specialists such as Hope.( state of the art lightweight hydraulic disc brakes) this mean feet are for standing on not twitching the toes on the right foot looking for a brake..
  2. laudable intentions, but opens a can or worms, how young is young.. and how old is old enough to certain of a place... does a regular 55 year old rider give way to a 75 year old once a year man.. first come first served covers all the basis.. trials a simple sport for everyday folk.., complicated only by blokes on bikes
  3. write your post code phone number in that ink that shows up under ultra violet on the frame engine forks then if it ever does get taken without the owners permission it ll be easy to prove it was yours.. also data tagging is a good idea ( other systems are available) but most of all enjoy..
  4. the vin is what it says, a vehicle identification number how you choose to use it is up to you. manufacturers use them to identify production quantities/ date of manufacture and model/ specification. dvla use them to link to a registration document (V5c)
  5. you took the vin from the frame did it match the vin on the v5c? many vehicles have a single figure or so wrong between frame and v5c and dvla usuallly sort this out when the MOT comes along .. HOWEVER since the dvla moved almost exclusively to swansea and paper based enquries many vehicles are been found to be incorrect and dvla have started taking a very strict line. if you cant prove there is a VERY good reason for the two to differ they will withdraw the v5c and you have to apply again including the various vehicle checks /tests. a sports car with a very well logged history, carrying the same number plate for over 45 years has just had its v5c withdrawn by dvla never to be returned due to inaccuracies in paperwork dating back to the 70's.. its value fell from 8k to 1k overnight.
  6. cover your bike via msm thats fuly comp and leagl for trials for just over the ton for the year.. the trials insurance will not stand up as sole insurance so you need minimum third party annually plus the tax disc yes they will need the bike to be insured before issuing a v5c you insure against the vin and they have things called computers that connect to insurers computers and they know if you have /have not got insurance.. if you ve sent off your stuff you ll get it all back in a fortnight saying... sorry no insurance..
  7. yup hung up on the nova1 from hmrc, dvla will not accept application without clearance from hmrc i have all the other stuff.. this is the second time i ve applied for it..
  8. so apologies if i missed this but there seem to be a significant number of significant jotagas personnel in this group. and as i suspect gb is the second largest market for trials bikes i ask myself how many NEW beta gasgas sherco scorpa ossa etc have i seen in use this year? as for hope building bikes.. those lads are business men.. why sell a motorbike for £6k when they can push out top end gear for £6kpush bikes 24/7 365 days a year..
  9. regretably my 1953 AJS is hung up on dvla paperwork as i cannot produce a nova 1 and i m still waiting for hmrc to say they have no interest in it..
  10. the poachers NBBR is about 20 mile round and is the most popular round the west riding is about 40 mile round and gets a lot fewer riders... personally if its nice countryside views quiet roads then 40 is ok but 20 is better always surpised that british road trails are rarely laps of a shorter course. on the continent two three or even 4 laps of a say 5 mile course are common. the lake district sammy millar round was two laps of about 20 miles but that was tooo long and entries fell even though it had some of the best views ever in later years.
  11. from the horses mouth.. ( a michelin distributor) ''a tubed rear trials tyre is no longer listed as manufactured''
  12. jackie ickx.. one of those chaps whose like we ll not see in the proffesional era.. european 50cc trials champion 8 grand prix vixctories, 6 le mans victories wins on paris dakar, bathurst, spa 24 hours, and hes clerk of the course at monaco grand prix.
  13. i remember dave Thornber, not for riding an his panther but for his means of transporting it to trials... to get to trials he rode a panther with a flatbed sidecar upon which was mounted his trials bike.. only in yorkshire. (Sorry, totalshell, You are showing your {lack of} age!!!!!! Admittedly I am a Yorkshire Tyke but when I did my obligatory time in the RAF I was posted to Cosford as an electronics instructor, and joined the Market Drayton club where six of us each had sidecars as personal transport and on Sundays we lifted the sidecar off, put a plank across the sidecar chassis and mounted the trials bike on it. The local dealer was Abrahams in Market Drayton and their workshop foreman, Tom Wycherley, used an old Panther with a float sidecar to collect and deliver motorcycles. Happy days!!!!!! Deryk Wylde)
  14. l'd have an eye out for corrosion. The upper shock mounts can collect a bucket of crud and the swing arm is made of folded steel and collects water and crud .. aside from the differences above check out the front brake arms as they differ and those gold rims might look ok but internally they rust like no other. the rust accumulates and it means fitting a new tyre is nye on impossible without spending A LOT of time removing the stuff..
  15. 1975. its been fettled by a proper man that can Paul jackson its fiddle forks alloy rims 4spd engine centre plug head looks like a rob homer exhaust. could do with a tidy bare alloy tank elextrex ignition new bars controls etc so a very good thing outwardly to get cracking on with
  16. heres a live example of a proper modded bike.. i d expect it to fetch mid price range money..http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BANTAM-TRIALS-PRE-65-/141203389298
  17. if your building a bike and the first question your asking is how much will it be worth then the answer is not to proceed any further if the question is how much will it cost to build a bike then the answer is anywhere between 1 and 5k If the question is how much will it cost me to buy a built trials bike the answer is 1500 to 5000 of course they be plenty of folk along in a minute to tell you theyve built one for 3 quid and a toffee wrapper and i dont doubt it for a minute..
  18. i believe its all about section severity. if you plot a novice route that is tough enough to only take less than 15 from the bottom half of the novice class those at the top of the class will not want to ride it and choose a more appropriate route..
  19. only need a certificate if you are manufacturing to sell
  20. just turned 100k in mine.. it does 40mpg eats motorway miles cheapest tyres last about 20 repairs 1 clutch couple of pairs of windscreen wipers 2sets front pads 1set rear pads 1 main fuel pump pair rear wheel bearings THE ELECTRICS ARE CACK rainwater leaks into the cab the rear door alarm sensor is pants. THE ELECTRICS ARE CACK yes i would have another.. its earnt its way and in 10 years its done 100k been used as a mobile tool shed and bike transport i d probably get 2k for it today and i paid 11k .. cheap motoring
  21. 19mpg is cause for celebration??? just looking at new vans here in the uk and most are north of 40mpg combined with a new renault 62 combined..
  22. 19 inch 350 trials pattern tubed tyres are readily available.. though not by manufacturers you may recognise. 18 inch 400 tubed tyres are now a rare thing and should be snapped up as no high street manufacturer makes em any more. i d whole heartedly support standard bikes but that bird has flown the nest as too few could agree on what was standard and what would be acceptable. the 18 or 19 inch wheel for example .. your argument may be pragmatic but it also instanly lowers the gearing and thus makes a bike easier to ride in a section. i wrote an article for the yc newsletter some time ago detailing the mods to the welsh championship winning cub of about 1960.. practically nothing was the facts but no one .. no one would ride such a bike today never mind win a trial on one.. the passage of time may have made the bikes older but thier riders/ owners have more money and time, resources abound in 2014 literally anything can be had at the end of a phone and so these riders with time and money spend both on thier bikes.. and the wheel turns.
  23. your already looking to substanially modify your 16c by putting an 18 inch rim and modern tyre on.. however in your context there is little opportunity to ride an original specced bike competatively and there is the nub.. competatively.. you wheel your 16c out and somebody else will pull theres out after the trial you ll set about making yours better for next week as will the other guy and what you end up with is todays p65 rules and bikes. i can only agree with alan YC delivered a trial specifically for big bikes laid em out real easy and 10 turn up.. this for probably the biggest/ most popular p65 only club in the world.. plenty of demand from the spit and polish brigade for big old black bikes but having a garage full of the things i know what id rather be riding on a wet sunday in feb and cleaning on sunday t time.. there are trials for which your 16c is competative from the factory.. ACTC long distance road trials .. long straight forward sections road mileage and nobody rides trick p65 the couple of dozen regulars ride big 4 strokes..
  24. yup just done this tonight.. again. fiddle but all sorted now.. you actually move 4 cogs not two..
