  1. Yep me as well ! Had a couple of Cota's in the 70's so it was natural to come back in my dotage with a Mk4b just like an old glove! Welcome Baz, if you need any help, just ask on here , they are a great bunch.
  2. Hi Michel Its my guess that this Montesa is a ' Barn find' and has not been ridden for a few years ! In which case everything will be a bit stiff as lots of parts will need free-ing off, give all moving parts a good spray with 'WD40' or similar easing oil. Change gearbox and clutch oil when you service it. Also Points may be stuck open or closed giving No Spark and also Carb internals will need a good clean/ replacement. The Fender is in close proximity to the Muffler and if the bike was previously running a bit lean the the Muffler would be hotter than normal and could have melted the plastic!!!
  3. The Montesa name and Logo might of dissappeared years ago but there would always of been hope that it could be ressurected. with Honda owning the rights to the name I doubt that we will ever see the name re used on any brand or model again I would love to be proved wrong but for now its VIVA the departed
  4. It's not April Fools Day yet !!! Don't worry about going round corners there's no room for articulation as it will jam against the rear pillars and take out the tailgate window. Love the idea though ;-)
  5. Ive been useing Bel-ray Chain lube as well, does a good job but what misses the chain from the nozzle then sticks like sh*te to a blanket on the other parts and is a bugg*r to get off! Now taken to holding a cloth around the chain whilst spraying then wipeing the overspray back on the chain.
  6. Hi Dylan, Well in Britain it's been the wettest winter on record so most of our trials have been wet and muddy and our bikes look like that after most events. It's good practice to try and coax some grip in that mud !
  7. Save yourself a lot of effort (and time) if it's flooded, carry a plug spanner somewhere on the bike or your person, whip out the spark plug and kick it over with the throttle closed (make sure the ht lead is out of the way) dry the plug. The excess fuel should evaporate whilst your kicking it over, which is easy due to no compression, put the dry plug back in and it should start with a couple of kicks !
  8. Yep, us olden's don't bounce as well as we did. Having comeback after a 30 year lay-off I got some practice under my belt and entered my first trial for 35years. Amazed how it all comes back to you, 3 laps of 15 sections 1st lap 11, 2nd 7, 3rd 2 dabs , well pleased 17th out of 48 in twinshock class. Get some practice in then enter a trial, it will seem like you've never been away! Cheers Dave
  9. Hi Chris Try allensusedtrialsspares they had some Fantic shirts advertised on their website! Cheers Dave ( the Montesa twinshock guy)
  10. Back in 1962 growing up in Harlow (New Town) my pals dad had an Ariel 'Square Four' he had adapted for trials, the company he worked for, Key Glass had a waste piece of rough land beside the factory, they set up a Sports club and allowed local riders to use the area to practice. I learnt to ride there on a Tiger Cub at 9 years old. It became United Glass and they sold off the land for development. We then had to travel to Aveley sand pits to practice, free of charge. That was 'how it was' not like nowadays a fee to register and £10-20 per ride!
  11. Lots of Skill and Throttle control !!!
  12. I remember riding in an Eastern centre trial at Kelvedon Hatch where Doug and his good mate John Banks were riding these rather nice Bantams. Doug still rides these days, and still keeps his feet firmly on the pegs.
  13. Yep that common I've got one as well infact I've had 2 previously in the 70's . So when I was tempted back it was the natural choice ! Had a few problems to sort on mine, so if you need any help just ask. Mine's a mk4b roughly 74 / 75 pre large M covers. Cheers Dave
  14. Welcome back into the fold, we all seem to come back after 30 odd years ! What Montesa did you end up with?
  15. Hi Deryk I have really enjoyed your delves into the archives of ORR. Please keep it coming in this electronic format, it would be such a shame if it were to be lost and forgotten. Well done Charlie, I look forward to 'The Offroadarchive'. Regards Dave
  16. Just a bit of fine tuning Sparks and Woody. To the best of my knowledge 'DR's mk1 UMV10F 1968 mk2 68- 69 ( I had a mk2 reg AML 983H ) still large Drums. Mk3 from march 1971 small hub , new slim tank. Rappers. Mk4 dec 72 -73 on left side gear shift ( I had a mk 4 reg RPD 49L ) Jim Morris Mk4b debateable 74- 75 some have silver, later have black frames ! mk5 UKReplica. 75 onwards , upper clutch arm . Regards Dave
  17. This is probably one of the earliest Cota Works Development bikes in the UK. Ridden by D R Smith UMV10F was used in the SSDT and World Championship rounds. Here he is seen in a Eastern Centre, Chelmsford and District MCC Trial at Broomfield Quarry 26/10/1968
  18. How about an electrical coil inducing a magnetic field through a hub filled with iron filelings ! The field could be increased by applying a higher voltage to increase rotation resistance as pressure is applied to brake lever Only drawback would be if the engine stalls - you would loose your brakes (unless you had a battery back up )
  19. Dougie will be riding the bike he is developing - how else can you get a bike your developing in perfect balance to all conditions unless you put it through a Scott or SSDT. ( could it be the 2nd coming of the Greeves? It was almost there a year ago! )
  20. I remember purchasing my Belstaff Trialmaster suit from Monty Banks , Vallance Rd, E1. Monty let me have it at cost as I was still at school, lasted me about 15 years ,and the trousers could stand up on their own! They were still a couple of sizes too big for me even after all that time! Modern clothing has its benefits!
  21. Any video on this one Guys, would like to see the Bultaco out playing !
  22. Hi Snobbly Have a great day out on your first Trial, remember you don't have to attempt anything you don't fancy just ask the observer for a five. When you get the results through you'll be amazed how well you've done ! Most of all Enjoy Yourself Cheers Dave
  23. No good from wet and miserable UK , tell them they need to get their tech guys on the case!
  24. Hi cbf Have you thought about Twinshock trials? Your from the right sort of era (admited old git ) that would have known the bikes when they were new. The benefit is that the sections are laid out a lot easier for older bikes, they tend to be cheaper and possibly better looked after. Have a look on this site for Classic trials video's and see what you think, it's an easy in to the sport, and if you like it you could always advance to the newer stuff. Have a happy Hogmanay Cheers Dave
  25. Hi Ivor As you probably know the MH signifies the connection between Montesa and Honda for1982 when they brought out the 349 model and with a low Serial number like 291 it's going to be in the first few months of production. Good luck with getting it registered. Cheers Dave
