Thanks Woody & Hekto I just got a selection of springs from Peter Knight (4 soft, 4 medium & 2 hard) and was going to try a mix of 4 soft and 2 medium to start, when I discovered the broken off post. My clutch had 6 hard springs in it, which explained the 2 handed action, didnt slip tho. I suspect the boss got broken off or damaged, when someone levered against it to bend the tab up to secure the centre nut. Thanks for the help and suggestions. Ross

Well I found out why my clutch wouldn't free off ! Anybody think this could be welded without throwing the clutch completely out of balance ? (Anybody got one for sale ? swm tl320 1980 280cc)

Think I have sourced a pattern coil, looks identical, apart from the price. Give me a shout if you still need one.
  7. I have used 32:1 mineral for many years in rotax motors, so recomend from pratical experiance. It might be cleaner and pick up faster with other oils/ratios, but with a flywheel the size of a small car, dont see any advantage.

Mines just come out in sympathy. Just robbed another part off the Aprilia !
  9. They are a noisy engine after a few years, piston slap being particulaly obviouse. Get ear plugs, run mineral oil at 32:1, change the gear box oil regularly (check which is the drain plug) Check the fly wheel nut is tight. Routine maintenance. Enjoy. And check the kickstart allan bolt is tight.

A picture is worth a thousand words ! Which is SWM and Aprilia, guess.

Clutch should free off if your ride around for a while with the lever pulled in. Be very careful when attempting to drain the gear clutch oil, it is very easy to undo the kickstart spring stop nut by mistake. 1000cc 10w40 is what I use. Swinging arm is silent block and generally trouble free. See this site to help identify year http://www.motoswm.com/
  13. Dont get it ? Do you mean rent her one ?

You'le have to take the clutch cover off to get any idea. Might be the kick start gear was trying to engage while the motor was running ?
  15. Hi technowaldo, is it a conversion or an original fitment ? If the rests good enough you could un-convert it ? Shouldn't be that difficult / expensive to get a Grimeca hub & wheel, they were pretty common at the time and use on SWM, Gori, Girrelli, Armstrong etc You could probably use it as it is, but whats the point ? The argument that bikes were always being modified / improved completely misses the point. (IMO) Ross

Hi James Have you tried Martin Mathews ? http://www.motoswm.com/ Ross
  17. Best of luck, might take a few months. Even heard of adverts on ebay with price 1p for info, might get withdrawn but worth a go. If nothing else it should make it unsaleable.

I to would be interested to see what electronic ignition would do to the performance having changed a B40 and found a vast improvement. That said, I have never had any real problems with the points on a Rotax motor. FWIW. Ross

Hi Stu Your info along with NicolasVasic gives me plenty to think about. On a slightly different note I have just registered the bike which is a TL320, which I thought made it a 280cc. The plate on the steering head said 250cc, which seamed a strange size. It turned out it have been registered back in 1981 as a 280 so I will have to take the head off to find out the truth. Ross
