A picture is worth a thousand words !
Which is SWM and Aprilia, guess.

Clutch should free off if your ride around for a while with the lever pulled in.
Be very careful when attempting to drain the gear clutch oil, it is very easy to undo the kickstart spring stop nut by mistake.
1000cc 10w40 is what I use.
Swinging arm is silent block and generally trouble free.
See this site to help identify year http://www.motoswm.com/

Dont get it ?
Do you mean rent her one ?
-
You'le have to take the clutch cover off to get any idea. Might be the kick start gear was trying to engage while the motor was running ?
-
Hi technowaldo, is it a conversion or an original fitment ?
If the rests good enough you could un-convert it ? Shouldn't be that difficult / expensive to get a Grimeca hub & wheel, they were pretty common at the time and use on SWM, Gori, Girrelli, Armstrong etc
You could probably use it as it is, but whats the point ? The argument that bikes were always being modified / improved completely misses the point. (IMO)

Hi James
Have you tried Martin Mathews ?

Best of luck, might take a few months.
Even heard of adverts on ebay with price 1p for info, might get withdrawn but worth a go.
If nothing else it should make it unsaleable.

I tryed to do this on the DVLA webb site with no success, without a registration no.
Spoke to a Policeman with no success, (surprise surprise) however if you buy it and register it for off road use only (free)
see leaflet on DVLA website inf85 you can find out if its been stolen, not much use by then !

I to would be interested to see what electronic ignition would do to the performance having changed a B40 and found a vast improvement.
That said, I have never had any real problems with the points on a Rotax motor. FWIW.

Hi Stu
Your info along with NicolasVasic gives me plenty to think about.
On a slightly different note I have just registered the bike which is a TL320, which I thought made it a 280cc. The plate on the steering head said 250cc, which seamed a strange size.
It turned out it have been registered back in 1981 as a 280 so I will have to take the head off to find out the truth.

Hi James
A bit rough as its well worn & bent
-
Thanks Nicolas, just back from holiday so hadn't seen your reply till today.
Thanks for the info on flywheel weight.
My Aprilia has the same clutch cover as SWM, I think it was the Purple ones with discs back & front that had
the modified clutch cover, which is a good mod if you can find one.

I use a Kehin on mine that started life on a 250 Kawasaki trail bike.

Might be better to find out what the hub is and try and find other makes that used it.

Love the intelligent response, shut your eyes (and mind) put your fingers in your ears, but the problems wont go away.
Always the health service is trotted out as your main defence, but we all know the "Public Sector" is the huge machine which main purpose is to employ.
Seems to me that the banks and financial institutions were completely ungoverned, FSA, what a joke. Labour government did nothing to reign in their excesses, I take it you did vote for that ?
"when you turn up at casualty next one of the public sector unemployed will gladly tell you to F*ck off !" that's if they aren't off sick and being replaced by an agency nurse/doctor.
