I mix Castrol TTS synthetic at 50:1 for my SWM. There are some mineral 2-stroke oils around (Shell do one) and will require a ratio towards 40:1 or 25:1 but should be avoided. Don't go for a higher ratio above 50:1, even if it smokes a bit (should be fine though)

I just got a fully working Beta TR33 for around 300 quid (cheaper than a TY250); seems a solid bike, with a great engine and a front disk. Parts aren't too bad (Steve Goode and others). TR34's also good and available (nice one at Malvern for

One thing that was mentioned in this thread is the perceived value of trials bikes and spares for them. The one reason that there are now more twinshocks on Sammy Miller rounds than pre-65 is that they are relatively cheap to get into a sorted state. <

Tom,
I gave up trying to get my stock TL125 forks to work for me (i am around 180lbs); they simply aren't up for the job.
I have written a short article on this (and have subsequently sold my TL125's).
I did see a guy with a TL125 on the Vic Ashford trial couple of weeks ago; stock fork with spacers which seemed to work ok for him; i guess he was lighter than me though !

I've tried alternative rear boxes (a Wes pipe from a gas-gas i had) and it wasn't any good.
As Martin says, the baffle plates in the rear box can break off; I had one on the Guanaco I restored to exactly that. It did rattle and only with lack of power etc did I notice (more here). I did surgery on a couple of exhausts and I feel that with assistance of a better welder than I am that I got a really good finish. I also repacked the mid box on the Jumbo with the (cheaper) sheet packing from BVM. The loose stuff would probably be better
Also, used some black barbeque paint from B&Q; better finish that the PJ1 engine paint, and has slightly better petrol resistance.

some of the SWM forks are Betor's; there is an exploded diagram here but sure if this is the same model

Good start to the 2008 Sammy Miller series, good set of sections in some great countryside.
Interestingly, I think this might be the first time that the twinshocks (28) outnumbered pre-65's (23), with only a few trail bikes and 8 or so sidecars.
Vic Ashford Trial article and photos
I enjoyed myself, thanks to the observers and organisers

a reply at long last, but the answer is currently no, for all my SWMs, not yet.
after getting a TR240 Beta must admit the idea of fitting a motoplat or similar is very tempting. The priority for an SWM is to move the condensor from behind the flywheel. Interested to know if you are planning an upgrade.

Any thoughts on what this might be ?

heard you rode well on the Majesty, once it surfaced from the 3rd section of the day...
another brilliant day out; that Dave Thorpe going round for only 1 is rather awesome ....

A quick review of the Greensmiths Trial from a couple of weekends back can be found here
As usual my personal take on a Sammy Miller series trial, footing my way round at the back. Its good fun, honest !
Many thanks to the South Birmingham club

No, doesn't need to be a postal entry; just give me or John a call before (on the Saturday is good) to let us know you are coming

The Wye Valley Auto Club's 4th round of its Classic Series will be on the 28th October at Lodge Wood, Dulas, Directions from the A465 Abergavenny -> Hereford road and note the parking is from Platch Farm, not the normal parking location. Turn left opposite the Temple in Ewyas Harold rather than going straight on.
Pre-65, Twinshock, air-cooled mono';s aswell as o/40 on modern mono's welcome. Other riders please get in touch beforehand. You can get the Supplementary Regs from the ACU Western Centre Website or alternatively give me a call on 07720 079845.
The Stan Hinsley trial on Saturday was well laid out and (hopefully) we can get 14-15 sections in a lap again.

A great trial today, with about 35 riders making an appearance with some slippery conditions. Will post the results when i get them, or you can find them on the ACU Western Centre Website
Thanks to everyone who helped out.

if (hypothetically) I was looking for rigid rear pre-65, anyone got any suggestions of what to look at and who to talk to ? Thinking about some local events and potentially the Sammy Miller series next year....
-
The Wye Valley trial was canceled because of F&M; numbers were slow coming in but had the event run, we would have 40+ entries. This level of entries was at a level with the Classic Experts a few years back, so given the quality of the sections etc, they would have picked up in subsequent years. The trial was aimed at a dual route approach, very similar to the Classic Experts.
The club will run the trial next year, but we're looking at the options for running as either a standalone trial, or as part of the Sammy Miller or Classic championship. If we do look to run it standalone, as there are already plenty of Classic rounds, it will be probably be the former.
A dual route Classic series ? then I'm sure that I'll ride, as will others from the WVAC club as well as the Tredegar contigent

one of the top trials of the year, usually around 20 miles in length and around 30-35 sections. Not seen the regs from Malcolm yet, but yep enter.. Two routes and two classes, pre-65 and twinshock.
If you want to relive Gavin on my Honda TL125 (he decided to enter as we arrived and after i bought him breakfast :-), then

all,
unfortunately the decision has been made to cancel the trial on Sunday 23/Sept, in response to new F&M outbreak and the animal movement ban coming back in to force. Its a shame given the effect that members of WVAC have put in but hopefully the trial will run (at some point) next year.
I'll be returning all entries with a note about the cancellaiton and will also email those who I have contact details for, but please let anyone know who think might have been riding.
thanks
Malc

Chris and Pitley's aim was to made this a pure twinshock trial much in the mold the Classic Experts at Rhayader (which is excellent) and given the effort they've both put in, it would be a shame fto have the entries it deserves. Great sections, brilliant countryside in south Herefordshire, what more could your old bike want :-)
We may consider entires for non-twinshock bikes, just to ensure we can get the numbers we need, but yep get your entries in. If you need any info, give me a call.
Woody, could be a good SWM entry....:-)

The Wye Valley Auto Club has got the go ahead from all the landowners to run its Classic Twinshock trial on 23/September. The trial starts from the Crown Inn at Longtown, Herefordshire on Sunday 23rd Sept and will be a 30 mile lap, with 30 sections in 14 groups. It covers the ground of the Wye Valley Traders trial which was last run in the early 90's and includes some of the classic sections (not Tremorithic you'll be glad to know).
The trial will have 2 routes, each for 2 classes of machines, British Twinshock's (Cub's, Bantam's etc) and later non-British (Honda's SWM's, Majesty's etc). There is camping at the start, refreshments (from the pub)
Though we've had some good entries, we could do with more to get to the number that would make the effort that Andy and Chris have put in worthwhile. Maybe F&M uncertainty or that this is the first time the event has run for over 20 years, may have made you hestitate, but it would be a shame to miss out on what will be a superb event
The closing date for entries in 17th September, but I'll be able to take some late entries and also should be able to take entries via email. Entry is

ok, so maybe the description is a little over the top, but it is a really good venue. Rode my first trial there last Sunday and was well rewarded
Trial Report
many thanks to Sean, Mark and others from the Gwent Classic club for putting this trial on.

yep, tighten the handlebar bracing bolts as a a start; then maybe the fork clamps. Its happened to me before.
-
excellent response and a _factual_ update on whats happening. Given the impact on farming in the Marches in 2001 I only hope that everyone is understanding if the trial does indeed have to be cancelled.
Will check the website during the week....
