USA Trials

We are preparing for the 25th (or so) F-I-S 2-Day which will be held at Hard Rock cycle park in Ocala on March 4th and 5th. There will be 10 sections ridden 3 times each day with the emphasis on FUN! We had a club event on the 8th and my clubmembers cleared 5 new areas, so the variety will be from rocky sections to good camber hills. We are making sure the sections are of similar difficulty or a little easier than the class norm with the exception in the champ lines. They will be Natl Ex to Pro lines for a tune-up for the season. What type of training do you participate in to prepare for the trials season? What I am wondering is, do you run, bicycle, lift weights, set up sections and make them harder and harder as you learn to ride them. Just curious, would especially like to know what the guys/girls do who ride nationals. Wayne

I have just received a DVD from Noel (Pat’s Dad) showing the skill and virtues of his trials prodigy son Pat. I didn’t know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. He has definitely got talent and could certainly hold his own on the European & World stage (A Class). In my humble opinion, you have got a potential world champ in the lad so if you want one, get behind him, Get him on a 125cc and get him on the European/World stage quick I will get some of the footage on here from the DVD as soon as I can..

Over the years I've seen all of you debate over how to get an American rider to be competative at a world round. What I haven't seen are suggestions with regards to sponsorship. The reason the other countries are so competative is that the sport of trials pays money over there and is considered a professional sport. Here in America, trials is an amatuer sport. Our professional sports here pays nice little chunks of money like 25 million dollar contracts therefore our kids are motivated and their parents are turned into "soccer parents" doing all the things that create professional sports players out of them. Mich Lin, I have a question about foot position, I'm confused about riding on the balls of my feet or on the shank? I always was told to ride on the balls of my feet on moto I dabble in bike trials and ride Sport level, some Expert bike trials riders mentioned that I should stop riding on the balls of my feet and more on the shank for stability. Should I adapt this style of foot position for moto? I understand that going up ledges you need to be on the balls, not to catch the toes and doing large drops for more absortion of shock. sam

Anyone see the article on trials and scorpa 175 four stroker? Though cool to see trials represented in any national publication, I thought the article was rather boring. Taking one of the lower enduro editors and throwing him on a bike with the no name top scorpa rider (I've never heard of him) to assist isn't gonna turn heads. The setting being in Moab, Utah was alright, but still... Though I doubt any of us trials riders could really give an unbiased opinion if they hired us. Not that the writers there are unbiased or anything but errrr....

Happy New Year! Here is one new years resolution for the US Motorcycle Trials Association members (and you should be one): we need to get to work on the committees for competition rules and club resources! The competition rules committee will include rules for scoring and section marking for a competition event for clubs, which will be submitted to the AMA for approval and inclusion in the AMA rulebook. This committee (or perhaps a subcommittee of it) should also develop guidelines for defining names and skill levels for classes (as is done with enduros & other forms of motorcycle competition) that can serve as a suggested standard for individual clubs. I do appreciate all your responses guys. The more I think about it, the more I know you are right, it's too complicated. Gotta keep it simple. Heck, Trials riders can't even count to 5...1,2,3,5. I do like the idea of self scoring that some of you advised. Sure wouldn't be any worse than what we are doing now. Thanks for your input! I think I still like this part though: Scoring could be further streamlined by not having each rider carry a score card that the scorer would have to punch.
