Road Legal, MOT, Insurance etc

Hi Guys, Just bought an 85 TY250 Mono for restoration and it looks like the old mudguard might have had a reg number plate on it, both vin and engine number are correct. Would I be able to HPI just off the VIN ? Thanks in advance guys

Hello Just after some advice. Pretty much getting there with the registering my Yam TY175. On the case with NOVA, have a dating letter from Yamaha etc. Just completing the V55/5. As trials bikes are exempt from type approval, can I leave all the boxes that say 'get this information from the certificate of conformity' blank? Or is certificate of conformity something completely different? Wheelbase, Mass etc? Thanks for your help. Cheers Dave

Anyone here insure their bike for on the road use and theft, if so who do you insure it with and what does it cost? Mines already road registered and currently SORN. Obviously I'm not looking to actually ride it around on the road but insurance would be handy for a bit of green laning or if it ever gets stolen from my garage.

Have the rules on SORN changed? I normally re-sorn my bike every October but now the DVLA website keeps telling me that the bike is currently sorn? (the last time I Declared it was oct 2013)

Hi, Need a little advice if possible. I have a 349 Cota which I've had for a few years now and have decided that this year I'll get the bike finished. It's still in bits but I've contacted Sandifords for an age related certificate which they cannot issue now due to not being authorised by HMRC. Can the bike be registered without this document? I don't know if the bike was ever registered as there were no documents supplied with the bike when I bought it. I'm pretty sure it's a Mark 1 349 from the engine and chassis numbers, probably late 1979 early 1980. The numbers are: 51M 18186. Hello all. Just wanted to share a bit of info with regards insurance. I have been looking to insure my Sherco 290 (road registered) once I completed my bike licence. I called all the various 'speacialist' companies whos names crop up around these parts when you search for insurance guidance. All in all it was a pretty dissapointing experience up until this week. The company I was most dissapointed with was Carol Nash. Hi guys, I rang Carol Nash today to insure my non road registered Beta Evo 200 2013, the girl asked if it was in a garage or shed i said it was in a 17 x 9 foot breeze block shed, she asked if i could get a car in to which i replied no as it only has a pedestrian sized door which is of steel construction, she said the underwriter would not accept the building as it was not classed as a garage.........Help!

Hi I have been buying a beta Rev 3 270 2005 the problem Im having is I'm wanting to put it on the road but here's the catch I bought the bike and the owner of the bike had been using it off road and didn't have a v5 or any reg plate with the bike but he insists that it has been registered by the owner before him so we're do I go from here because to apply for a v5 you need the reg number ( what I have not got ) and I can't re register it because it's supposenly registered . Hi So the problem I have is insuring my bike at a different address to where I am living. The address is my ex-partners. Doodson would only insure mine if his was insured at the same time but now I am registering it they are unwilling to do that. Why are insurers unwilling to insure my bike at a different address? Will this change when it is registered? I don't understand why I can't insure my bike, on my own, without his being done too - insurers don't make sense!! If anyone can enlighten me I would be very greatful!

Hello all, Can you all please share how big your number plate is? How is it attached (stuck to mudguard, on a bracket)? Have you had any issues if it's a non legal size? I know how big they should be but its just not that practical. Ideally I just want a sticky one to stick to the rear mudguard but before I made a purchase I thought I would see what you are all using to get an idea. Thanks fellow riders. Chris.

Well the old girl has been a bit neglected for a while so it's time to give her a bit of attention. I'm gearing up to get the Sherco road worthy. Don't worry, no "what do I need for an MOT?" questions coming up. All I am trying to find out is with the new road fund licence rules, do you still need to display a tax disc on a motorbike? I understand why there is no need for a car due to numberplate recognition via the fancy cameras, just wondered if the same applies to motorbikes? Ta very much, Chris.

Morning All, Due to my age being 23 when I took my test, and after January 2013 I could do my full bike test but only have a a2 licence meaning I am restricted to 47bhp and no more than a 0.2kw/kg power to weight ratio. so im wondering if any body out there actually noes the BHP of a 2015 sherco 300? its the power to weight im worried about. sherco state it weighs 68kg and 0.2kw equates to 0.268bhp, there for the bike would have to be 18bhp to be legal? could any one in the no please shed some light Many Thanks

Hi, does anyone know if the Type Approval Exemption for Trials Bikes still applies. I am trying to road register a 4RT and I I have the certificate of newness. The DVLA guidance notes for registering a vehicle in 2012 (form V355) said: Competition motorcycles are excluded from the EU type approval system (vehicles intended for use in competition, on roads or in off-road conditions) Directive 2002/24/EC Article 1. Para. 1, item d) and thus from Motorcycle single vehicle approval (MSVA) as well. The only competitions involving road use, and hence the registration of motorcycles are trials and enduros. Ive seen lots of differing versions of what you need posted into the forums.. ive just had mine done so I can confirm the requirements - 1) horn (constant sound - not honk HONK !) - megablast horn avail on ebay 2) road reg plate (to the proper standards, i.e full size) 3 Tyres - if your tyres say 'for offroad use only' on them, scrub this off, start with with a sharp Stanley knife then sand to remove any trace The bike has to be in general good condition in terms of play on headstock or swing arm / wheels.
