  1. I have to agree with Steve '03 would have been a totally different season had the Spanish Champs protest not changed the result of the WTC. I'm not saying that the title would have gone elsewhere, but the running order would have been very different. Raga was mega confident after he lifted the indoor title, so confident that he thought he could strike and get Lampkin & Co removed from the Spanish Champs. With the No.1 on his shirt again, expect him to be confident for the start of the Outdoor Season, if he gets a good result or two in the first couple of rounds then there's going to be a big fight all season. With the Indoor pretty much lost, what Dougie needs is a couple of decent results (i.e. wins !) in the closing rounds and no less than a win in the next Spanish Outdoor round. I'd like to see Dougie get rid of all the gremlins indoors and then do the business outdoors when it really counts. After all, how can a 'circus' of 6 riders, riding a maximum of 20 sections per event constitute a true world championship.

    What Else?

You'll probably need to do the Clutch plates and Gear Oil. So keep
  3. IanJ - Did you get those lightened springs and did they work ? My newer bike has a really heavy clutch, back bled the system with new fluid, new sureflex plates and new Elf tranny oil, its still a pig ! What's the deal with the steel plates, read somewhere that if they're shiney they need dulling with some sand paper ? Other than that any thoughts ? Springs ?
  4. 80:1 IPONE with ELF GPM-2T Any 2T oil at all in the SP180 Commuter Scooter - never knowingly siezed
  5. Is there much difference between a 2002 and 2001. The difference is in the frame geometry, 2002 is the same frame as the 03 & 04. I just chopped an 01 for an 02 as I liked the way the later bike steered. Apparently the Clutch master is different, but I can't notice it. Other Montesa questions I have are :- 1. Is the airbox fairly watertight..........other bikes seem to suffer Providing you maintain a bit of tape across the gap between the undersid e of the guard and the air box, they are pretty good - not submarine quality but as good as anything out there, and better than most. 2. Does the 2001 bike have revised steering geometry to go with Showa forks and better carb? No the 01 frame is the same part number as the previous years, it has a different swingarm and rear brake caliper though. 3. Any other mods I should look for ? A stock bike is a good sign - it means that nobody like me has messed with it. Fork guards are nice. Boyesen reeds soften the motor a little. Black throttle tube will help if you getting back into the sport. 4. What protection should I get to Trial on for forks/frame etc. Frame is bullet proof, will only get small scratches under normal use. Heavy duty Tecnosel can be used to protect the area above the footrests. Fork guards - quite a few models around try a local dealer. 5. Are the engines under normal use pretty bullet proof or do they need rings/pistons and rods every season............plus mains etc from time to time? Just got an 02 and have done the rings and pin as a matter of course, didn't need it as the bike had been hardly used. My mates '98 hasn't even had the carb off and runs right week in week out. Unless the bikes done a lot of work it should be sound. Easier to work on than an XR ! In general is there anything else I need to know about the bike........... If you have been around bikes check all the basics, wheel alignment, spoke tension, frame welds, bearing play, suspension bushes, etc. motors are normally pretty quiet rattle wise, with the clutch in. The clutch may drag but it's easily fixed with new plates and oil. Watch out for older bikes in new clothes
  6. Get yourself along to the start at the Horse & Harrow Pub in West Hagbourne before 9.30, pick up a programme, then there's enough time to drive to Seymour's get a bacon sarnie and a mug of sludge before the first riders get there. Depending on who you want to watch, you can get to a couple of other groups in the PM, last section is normally back at the Horse and Harrow, just walking distance from the bar.
  7. Check your disk bolts, if one comes loose it can jam the wheel.
  8. Kinnell was in full training when I saw him, parachute and bum bag. Made those lads on the SAS Documentary look soft - a 50lb Bergan is for lightweights. I of course was showing him how I am a master of the centipede trick, mostly used when I don't know what the hell I'm doing in a section - which is most of the time

    Down Pipes

I prefer the hand made stainless version All the front pipes fit all the bikes (315 that is) I got my '99 chromed, but after the bead blasting and chroming it would have been cheaper to buy new. Suggest you call the UK importer and Haven for prices - you may be pleasantly surprised
  10. Probably best to follow Ishy's advice. But if you must take the timing cover off, definitely get a new gasket when you refit it.
  11. Classic Did you mention that we're using a really bad line ? and a knackered handset.
  12. Sorry to bring this up again..... But my insurance renewal has just come through and the insurer is now explicitly excluding use in motor cycle trials, not a lot of good for me as that's all I use it for - of course the fire and theft cover is useful to. Any friendly Insurers left that understand that a bike being used in a road trial is slightly less risk than Joe Blogg's Sunday ride to the Cafe on his Blade ? Your help will be most appreciated

    '99 Carb

Don't want to be a pain but.. The inlet rubber and the air hose rubber might need changing as the carb is smaller and they're different parts on the later bikes. They may fit, don't know how monty-python got on ?

    '99 Carb

OK so here's my take, ready to be shot down in flames. Mr Traynor is the expert on this stuff - but here goes anyway Two things. 1. The idle circuit. As the idle screw adjusts only the air on the old carb i.e. you always get the same amount of fuel and you adjust it with the air to fine tune it. The idle screw on the PHBL acts on the fuel flow so you can meter the fuel flow with a fixed amount of air. As its the fuel element in the air/fuel mix that is providing the bang! a bit further along the line, it sounds to me like it gives you greater control over the fuel/air mix and ultimately the resultant bang!. 2. The PHBL is a later development by Dellorto - the most noticable thing about the carb is that the body is much smaller than the previous. Still has the same diameter, but all together more compact. I read somewhere that this worked better with low revs and small capacity motors. The Carburetor Manual by Dellorto explains it all, I just can't find my copy at the moment. My final cop out is that the other manufacturers all ditched the PHBH(?) for the PHBL way before Montesa - the theory is the Monty factory had a job lot and kept fitting them until the stock ran out in 2001. GG & Sherco were using them before, Sherco didn't buy any, GG had plenty of bike to churn them out on. I had the same conversation with the importer in 2000 when I was trying to sort my '99 - I spent
  15. Hmm, sorry about that. I was even thinking about Photoshopping some stuff to make the bike ! But what a great idea, how about Kawasaki and Suzuki getting back into the sport. The new MX 250 4-stroke joint development has a compact bottom end that's just ripe for a bit of trials development - me thinks. If a TTR125 can be made into a trials iron then ......... The CR250F bottom end might be the basis for the new Monty, have a look at one and it doesn't take much to see it wrapped in a nice italian alloy frame, with the Showas and AJP bits. Just fantasy unfortunately...

    '99 Carb

I ran my '99 with the 2K jets and it was better than stock. In a straight comparison the Keihin PWK28 worked better for me on my '99. It seemed to take longer for me to get it run right, and would vary a lot over a day's riding. Never had that problem with the later PHBL. The Keihin and PHBL both worked well side by side, the Keihin giving a bit more top end whereas the PHBL was better suited to my lower rev riding. Tried the newer Dellorto VHST as well, but that seemed to be another sensitive carb, I'd like to know if they have mod'ed it much for the works bikes (i.e. over and above jetting). Until then its sitting in a drawer !
  17. I think that the DVDs are cut as Region 0 - I have a std Sony and have no problems. The only time I've had any probs is when my 3 year old decides to polish the floor with the DVDs then its just a wipe over and there fine again. Dirty Discs / player ?
  18. Or... Hope it's nothing to do with my rumour that I started on another site about the T(rials)-Ossa that was being launched this year. (4-stroke water cooled, aluminium frame, etc) Unfortunately that was pure fantasy induced by too many Cobra's with my curry
  19. Looking forward to seeing people wearing bright green gear again

    Boots

I think that you can get close to the Novogar / Dirtbike Expo price by buying online @
  21. Just to clarify on what the guys have said above. From a '99 to a 2000 bike they changed the front forks, chromed the front pipe, used DID Rims and polished the hubs From 2000 to 2001 the carb, swinging arm, inboard rear brake caliper, 4 pot front brake, were all changed/ added. 2001 to a 2002 the major change was the frame geometry. 2002 to a 2003 the big change is the motor porting. There's other detailed changes, but when the difference in cost is probably
  22. And from the back - not quite as neat but works !
  23. The Boyesen's can be found at a local MX/Boyesen dealer (I think that they are distributed by AXO/Oakley - not sure though) you'll need to special order them. Other things to consider, black throttle tube, 42 rear sprocket, both slow things a bit and take the edge of the bottom. On the vents, here's my rear guard with the P.38 mesh
