You could try all the reasonable things.... but better to tell him/her/it to shove it up his 4rse...
They try it on and get away with it...if you let them!
-
Plenty of 'cheater' bikes much newer than this riding in pre 65 trials.... erm allegedly
-
He He... Old Saunders and nothaving a factory bike due to 'confusion at the factory' ..... You could almost believe that Fantic bought Saunders to keep him from winning the World Champs. He ought to have won that!
Anybody got any more recent pictures of the other Saunders 'confusion' when he 'mistakenly' rode a 250cc or larger Gas Gas that just happened to have 200 plastics on it?
I think perhaps that was just cheating and not a mix up at GG ..... can't remember what happened but I dont believe he actually collected the small capacity award... I wasn't in the SSDT that year, but I saw a pic in the TMX and thought... Hmm thats not a little 'un.... must think the regular punters are morons or something!
-
199 on the SWM... looks like a woman and has a daft helmet... Gotta be John Reynolds!
OK its Lisa Jones I think, but I just wanted to type the above line!
-
They might have some good tech stuff to thow on the Mont (F)4RT but the TRW I-ties don't seem to have any colour vision. Retro gold or bobbins green all looks cak to me!
-
I think Honda bought Montesa back in the dark ages to get a factory in Spain for moped sales/manufacture, but I'm not sure
If trials is a cottage industry does this mean trials riders are all cottagers?
-
Hmmm I've changed my mind on the 'best' I guess on the basis of what they have done for Trials, and people involved in Trials, whilst they made their own living at Trials. I'd say also over a longish time frame too.
On this Basis I can use the word ambassador.....
No. 1 Mick Andrews
No. 2 dunno.... maybe Sammy Miller?
John Shuttleworth also had a good song wih Ambassador (Y reg.) in it ..... just don't ask me why Reg...It just happens to be that year
Give Lampkin another 20 years then he may earn the tag of ambassador!
Still he could win a round or two this year!
-
Yep it depends how you define best... It simply has to be best of their time to be honest.
I'd say Tarres is my No. 1 of all time, but like I say above, it depends how you define best. Lampkin is undeniably the best of his 'time'.
It become very emotive too...same as football.. Maradonna was the best player of his time. People who really know about footy (not me!) say that he is the best player they have ever seen!. Others who don't understand professionalism say he's a cheat!
Back to Lampkin...I reckon he will have a chance of stealing a win or two at a push no more.
I'd say now that he has shown more determination and will than others I've seen, but that does not make up for youth/reaction time etc. (like others have said), plus that determination has to be diminishing!
-
It's clear that he has already proved how good he is/was.
I'd find it hard to believe he can be as determined as he used to be, but I believe he must have been the most hard working of all the top world riders over the last few years. I never considered him the most 'natural' type of rider of the top lads, but just look at the results over the years. He hammered the riders who appear lighter and smoother on the bikes...... To me that shows a mega determination and will to win.
Once somebody has that 'will to win' you know they won't quit!
I'd say give him a chance, but to be honest age must start to take its toll and with all those titles under his belt perhaps even some of the determination will have gone.
-
Half fancy a 330 Mont myself....
I noticed a lot at Robregordo were more than a little modified. But some 'mods' were sensible. I can see why they nearly all lower the footrests..... I tried one and it was like being stood on the seat
I've never really lusted after Bulto's .... I don't dislike em but they don't do that much for me... I must be a bit odd?.... thats why I had a 300 Fantic
I've got a load of my rank (-r +w) scottish pics somewhere
I might get some scanning done if I find them.

Didn't Gorgot win on a crate like this?
http://www.geocities.com/guanaco_es/c_349.jpg
-
Paul Sagar
yep
I'd go for that no 'phone a friend' (cus I don't have any) ... final answer ... yes get the farq on with it....
-
Big John ... get the program out and look at ll the Gori riders.... Its not Ian Weatherill is it.... I'm sure he is in the Bernard Cordonnier altitude ??
-
The mystery Gori rider then?
I would have thought Hooke, but his snout is a tad larger !
It looks otherwise very similar..... could it be and a bizarre camera trick
-
I don't have the program either, but I star in the photos ...No. 18 (Saunders dropping the Bulto) RHS of the Observer... My dad, my mum and then me with the white flat cap.... hehe I looked a pratt back then too!
No 4) pic didn't show... thats why I thought it was number 5) Charles Coutard
No 4) yep Gilles Burgat ... won it in 81 on an SWM I recall
Paul Craven (father of Martin) seems to be in a lot of those pics too!
-
Big John has the program then?
well done
Andy Gardner on the Fantic
Oh and the slim bloke was Colin Sagar.... bit stockier last time I saw him
OK then how about the spectators!!!
-
OK
At a guess on some tho
2), 13), 30) Martin Lampkin
Cant recall number is it 4) ... Rider 55 Charles Coutard also pic 31)
3), 6) Bernie Schreiber
7) Yrjo Vesterinen
11) Hmmm is it a Sagar?.. mybe a bit too thin... not sure
12)Mark Holland
14) Sid or whatever Lampkin
15) 16) John Lampkin
19) 29) Malcolm Rathmell
20) Nigel Birket
21) Maybe Saunders?
26) John Reynolds
The other Fantic rider no 48 .... I know it I know it but cant remember his name..... bu99er!
-
Oh my god... Paying to advertise... Christ on a bike (with oil company stickers of course).
Don't put stickers on your bike unless you are getting summink fer nowt.... or at least cheap...
Buying stickers now that is silly.

Has anybody checked out on a dyno the difference between low octane fuels and high ones on a trials engine?
I heard of an incident at the Goodwood Festival a couple of years ago with BP when they tested two Saabs on a rolling road and the lower octane fuel made more bhp on a standard Vauhall 9-3 turbo... Oh sorry Saab 9-3 turbo
Something to do with ethanol being used to get RON up but having less enegy than petrol.... anyway they swapped the cars over on the dyno's, then the fuel in the cars and found out the lower RON fuel made more peak power on these Vauxhall Vectras... erm Saab 9-3 turbos
So unless the ethanol os really required to stop the engine 'knocking' its borrix off then I wonder if there is an element of p155ing into the wind by going for high RON tesco pump 99 (I'll have a 99 with the two flakes please plus a bit of diesel and other unidentified fluids... thanks!. Any Raspberry Sauce?)

To keep with the original thread. Lampkin could steal a win or two from the others, but I guess after the run he's had it is hard to keep up the motivation.
However, I would say it must be better for him back on a 2stroke, but you need to ask him about that, although I'm sure he won't say its worse!!!
Now to leave the thread....As for all the other about who rides what. Top riders ride for money! Who pays the most normally gets the rider they want.
It is a business, so I guess they would ride a Honda Placcy (C50) if the money was good.... OK I'm stretching the point, but if somebody said here ride this shed and you won't need to ride (for money) again with all the dosh we will pay you I expect few would refuse
-
I had a 300 Fantic... I loved it! Much better than the 240 I thought back then (fit the modified top yoke and trim the sidepanels for more steering lock )..... Then I got a TY250 mono......... Christ what a tank that 300 Fantic was...... Still, I'd like to find one in a shed somewhere!
The TY250 mono was the best bike on the market to ride until the 327 Gasser came out in '87 (not the Halley model).... then 3 months later it was clear the Spaniards (at Gas Gas) had no idea of tempering and heat treatment and the Gas Gas was the best to ride only when it didn't drop to bits..... now 20 years on and I suppose the Spaniard have nearly got to the quality level of Yamaha (OK they haven't.... and they won't!)
I don't have any nostalgia for the TY250 though.... shame as it was THE biggest leap forward in trials since 1965!
-
Kylie ....... Wahey.... you'd never tire would you!
-
Reminds me ... I must service the lawnmower and put it into storage
-
We very rarely patent anything.... as we sell things into China, and similar places, a patent is not worth a light...in fact its almost giving them the instructions.
...on the note of employees... we have a 'selection'. They are all good most of the time, but a few are extra helpful. I know if I need something doing in a hurry who I will go and see...
" If you want a job doing, give it to a busy man!"
-
I recall a moto-x engine being very successful in a trials bike in the '80's (OK it won only one world round, but it made a damn fine bike for the rest of the market). I guess there are many other examples too!
Nothing beats a good engineer..... apart from a physicist!
