We all know that trials is cheap. This is in reality due to the hard work (mainly) of the event organisers and understanding landowners.
Unless you have been involved with running an event you do not know the hassle involved.
I dont think the ACU £10 charge for an I.D card is good or bad. Nowadays you can call it an admin charge.
My question is ... out of interest... and maybe it has been mentioned but I didn't read it.
Q. How many Trials 'ID' cards are issued every year by the ACU?
I'm wondering how many active (or activeish) competitors there are?
Thanks

The 'Plot' it appears has sadly been lost!
R.I.P. twinshock trials as it should be

If its a Pre 'Pro' model 200 (163) then IF its in good condition you can't get a better '200'..... If you are not a hoppin' and a boppin' then the bike is so much better than the Pro versions... its better built too!
Your version of the Gas Gas does everything right if you are more of a rider than an acrobat...
I've no idea why you modded the clutch, because as standard they were light and had a superb action.
Early Pro models clutches were poor in comparison, but the newer ones seem good.
-
You can get 'brand new' pre -65 bikes with many modern features...
well at least I think you can as there are plenty of them in the classic trials!!!!!!
Seriously look at a little scorpa as others have mentioned... other than that you will need to get something a bit older, but the problem is they are nearly always knackered.

Scrap minders
let em hop and the lot.
Make long sections and give em 2 minutes
and if that doesn't help then take it to the vets and put it down!
-
Aye 3rd on this, but we know that Graham is actually a better rider than this... just think what he could have done on a good bike!
-
Ah so its only the HRC ones that don't have front wheelbearings?
I expect that he'd still be 'above average'! on the standard bike although it might make a bigger dint in the top of the van!
-
Aye and just think how good he could be if he had a decent bike?
I know Monts are not that good, but I'd expect them to make both wheels work
-
Normally the term 'Mint' means avoid!...or there is a hole in it.
The problem with a lot of trials riders is they think a new set of plastics and stickers turns a pile of scrap into a new bike.

Nice 300!
I wondered about the shockers, but they are the original Marzocchis on back to front I think... The yellow sticker goes inboard and the 'cooling fins' go outboard so you can knock them off on Rocks!... Must be rubbing on the chainguard that way round?
Has the 240 got the 300 ft mudguard on too?
-
OK I prefer the original look, but then thats just me....
I recall some old school Fantics had white plastic tanks and side panels (not the Thierry Michaud replica 300 with red panels overpainted white and the rear loop lopped off...which looks 2nd rate)... Couldn't google a picture quick enough of the older white tanked ones... maybe it wa sonly on the 50's and 75's???... need the old school graphics too!
Then there were the grey frame versions.... Or you could pick from the number of K (Key) Roo colours?
Blue goes well with orange.................

How about silver rims and plain white mudguards?

As I read through these I wonder how we define 'best' twinshock Fantic?
In its time I'd say the 200 minarelli.
The best was the 300 without a doubt (oh and they look so much better with the proper tank/panels and mudguards on too!).. and by this I mean the best to ride of them all BUT thats assuming we are comparing bikes that are fairly standard....if you start fiddling about with them then gawd knows!
I'm sure sombody has a ba5tardised 307/309 engined, modded to buggery, 300 Fantic with showa or whatever forks etc. etc. that rides really nice.
Horses for Horses or tricky bikes for twin shock courses. I'm not bothered about that bit its just hard to say what is a good twin shock Fantic if we are considering Frankenfantics too

Burnicle is a great commentator.. He makes the whole event a bit more light hearted and has more knowledge than most common taters....
I bet that you couldn't think of anybody better?? Eh?... remember they have to be able to talk to the masses! Not just a load of trials geeks... erm thats if the masses bother to watch this repetitive circus?

Most of the new helmets especially Airoh look stupid anyhow so don't worry.. seems fashionable to look like a Mekon
the better ones are/were Arai and Shoei

Dunno about 'pants' but trousers maybe
Motocross trousers seem to be baggier and have no padding for knee protection BUT room to put some decent Knee protectors in. These are possibly a better option?
Trials trousers appear to fit like a ballet dancer, are made out of bobbins stretchy material that tears, gets 'weird' when wet, and burns on the exhaust. They also have no knee protection (some have a bit of foam that is useless)... However, somebody out there may know of a decent set of trials trousers????.
Other than somebody knowing of a decent make, you may as well wear any old pair of trousers rather than specific trials type.. unless you have a thing for lycra.

Yes I had a TY175 with the early Majesty frame (placcy coated slighty modded TY frame).. they were the standard TY frame with the bottom tubes removed and a Dural bash plate (that my dad had to tell Shirty how to bend).. laid back shockers and perhaps a few brackets removed... they still had the back loop... oh and they were yellow plastic coated. I also had some other footrests on DT? maybe.
All early Majestys are are painted TY's the later ones are no great change either.... The TY was such a good bike in its day.
-
Isn't that a piercing in yer 'mono shock'???... no thats an Uncle Albert isn't it!!!
It seems to have the neat Yam TY under the tank 'tool box in the frame'... which suggests its a botched standard TY frame
-
Bolle Contour... fit great, are anti-fog and also say scratch resist. For about 5 or 6 quid ...
-
Best twinshock Fantic in its time was the Minarelli 200. The very last ones had 240 type forks too and the 240 style graphics on the tank and sidepanels... this is before the forward kick models.
I remember that the Minarelli ones used to whine a bit due to straight cut primary gears.... Some jerk came to buy it.. had a good test ride got it muddied up and said.. hmm there is a slight whine from the engine... I'll have to strip it down so I'll need 100 quid off...
As said in above posts it beat lots of other stuff..
The 300 had a more modern geometry, better steering, more stable etc. etc. etc. than a 240, but it was too late. The Yam mono was out and everybody else was on catch up.
I hasd a 300 and once the suspension was set up it was great... that is until i got a Yam Mono...

Fizzie DX .. the one with the big disc like thing on the front that is less effective than the previous models drum?
-
I'm really surprised that you can't get spares for the JTR... Hoses can be adapted from lots of other stuff.. Maybe if some engine parts are not available thats different, but people are keeping pre 65 stuff running, so don't chcuk the towel in too easily!
I guess that it's just the hassle that you want to avoid.
All the bikes are about the same in quality... no better than 'fair' (and most spares seem expensive too especially plastics). So you need to take your pick on performance and price.
-
We know what he's done.. thats written in history.
Too old for what?
The last bit of trials footage from world outdoors made me think... 'Oh he looks like hes going to hurt himself'..
I think he ought to pack it in at that level and let the whippersnappers keep on launching...
