  1. Is the barrel and head correct? I thought it looked like a later barrel. The forks tubes are not right (not that it's apparent in the picture) but the knurling for the lower clamp is below the clamp. Someone painted the frame red to make it look like a later model. It's suppose to run, but I haven't even had a chance to try other than giving it a couple kicks. It has healthy compression. This bike will actually go to the East Coast for my brother. No one needs more than one trials bike. A special thanks to Brian for posting the article scans, especially for posting big enough images to actually read it.
  2. I just picked up a M92 a couple weeks ago. Needs a little care but don't we all? Note that the transmission is on the correct side. I still haven't had a chance to figure out what all isn't correct. I think that list will be extensive.
  3. I think he said he already tried bultacouk
  4. I think Hugh's has the sidestands. As for the other parts I'd contact Hugh's and Mobley's to see if they have used stuff. Or another place to try is Matt as Speed and Sport.
  5. Powder coating the parts would have probably helped.
  6. You just need to move to somewhere that trials isn't so popular. We were at a vintage trials this weekend in NW Washington State (stones throw from Canada) and there were only about 18 riders total. Which is good in one sense (no waiting) and if we don't get more riders, fatal (they won't put it on again next year).
  7. You live in the right place. In the Portland area is COTA and someone will probably chime in as I think there is also a club in So. Oregon. COTA
  8. Me? On a TY? I can't, the shifter is on the wrong side. Most of the people I ride with have TYs. Interesting note about the Sammy Miller fiberglass, my uncle just picked up a TY with that on it, we may need to coat that one too.
  9. If you could clean out all the old gas/oil mixture? I'd recoat with fiberglass rosin. There are a couple products to recommend. One is por15, they have several products, you don't need the kit with the metal prep product. The other is one that Hugh's Bultaco sells and I've seen elsewhere too. It's called Caswell Gas Tank Sealer. I've heard people like one but not the other. I don't think you can go wrong with either. I'm surprised that there is a problem with a newer fiberglass tank. It's typically the crap they put in gas nowadays that kills the fiberglass. Most places have updated the fiberglass to withstand it. I've got a Sherpa T tank that was coated and it's fine. I've got a Pursang tank that wasn't and it leaks something fierce. I think I'm going to go with the Caswell Gas Tank Sealer. Typically you wash the tank with acetone and let dry, then apply. I think this is for the por15, the Caswell Gas Tank Sealer may be different.
  10. I can't tell if he is kidding or not. The local club was voting on a trophy person, these were the choices, so if I were ya'll, I'd keep the complaints to a minimum...
  11. Matt at Speed and Sport can make up custom cables. I'm not sure how large his inventory of odd nipples is (that sounds dirty, doesn't it?). Link here. Just give him the dimensions and specs and he can make them. The reason people want you to send the old ones is that it's a pain if the user doesn't spec the cable dimensions correctly (ask me how I know...). Listen carefully to the cable builder when they ask you exactly how to spec the cable(s).
  12. Are you riding new or old bikes? I just use some Bultaco MX pants (Metro) and take the padding out. Tough enough to take damage (when I fall over) and they aren't spandex (which also wouldn't be acceptable on my bod).
  13. Stay clear of that Ishy bloke, he's a bad influence when it comes to smoking and drinking! Plus, he'll probably try to sell you summat We went out to Ishy's last year for a Wednesday night event. We rode the Novice line and many times I was wishing I could ride the Kids sections. At least we didn't have to try the big hinkin' tree! Slightly longer write up What really p****d me off was that some guy named Geoff Aaron showed up and instead of banging up my Bultaco, I could have watched him...
  14. I completely understand not posting the serial number, thank you for verifying that it is pre-2425. I still find it fascinating that it has the later shock mount on an earlier frame. A transitional frame, perhaps? One of those mysteries...
  15. I was surfing the web and ran across pictures of this bike and had to register to ask a couple questions... First, a very nice restoration. I've yet to see a Bultaco that nice. There was a discussion on the Bultaco Owners Forum about the changes made to the M49 (I have what is probably a middle-run M49) during it's production. One of the things under discussion was the changes made to the rear shock location and the airbox. M49 Variations I documented the change on the webpage linked above. Notice that the top shock location was apparently moved forward on the later bikes. John, I'd be interested in knowing where in the serial numbers your bike is. I don't need the exact number but is it before 2425? The reason I ask is that your bike appears to have the later shock mounts, but what is also interesting is that you have the earlier front frame section (single down tube that splits under the engine, whereas the later ones split at the front of the engine). I hope you don't mind all of the questions. I'm just trying to document the changes made to the M49. Thanks! (My top clamp is also painted, I'm not sure when they went polished)
  16. My name is Dave and I live in Portland, Oregon. I have a couple Bultacos, one that I ride regularly in AHRMA and other Vintage Trials here in the Pacific Northwest. We also have a very active modern trails club here (COTA), and while they welcome vintage bikes, I'm not good enough to take the old iron on their Novice line. Maybe one day when I get better... Ok, off to the Twinshock area.
