Hey guys, A mate of mine has a TY 175 twinshock & wants to do some mods. It has to stay twinshock so we can still ride in the vintage class. Has anyone out there changed stuff like foot peg positions, steering angles, length of swing arms etc? I'm pretty new to vintage stuff (modifying them anyway) but any suggestions would be appreciated. He's already done the exhaust packing mod & taken off the auto oil feed to gain a few more bhp. Thanks Taff

  4. Started by Tillerman6,

So another general question- #2 I have OKO 26mm on my TY 250 A and still trying to get the best operation out of it. It starts on about the 5th kick when cold, but when hot you need to open the throttle to maybe 1/3rd to get it to catch. There is no longer any kick back - but that is mostly due to the new Rex's ignition. But my concern now is that if you are just running on flat ground, the engine will fire every other revolution. This is annoying because of the vibration that is set up while this is going on. If you advance the throttle, the engine fires every stroke and smooths out, or uphill- same thing sounds solid and smooth- , but you onl…

I have a 1990 Mono TY 250 - given its age and weight I dont understand why it cant be regarded as the same class as a twinshock as it is miles away from modern lightweight bikes? Does anyone still ride the TY 250 mono or have they all be consigned to the dreaded field bike of farmers kids ? Matthew

I've been running my ty on 25-1 since I got it though the last 2 times out it has taken a while to run right. Today it was a pig and I spent a whole bunch of time fannying about with plugs which leads me to beleive the mix I'm running is too rich. I know many modern trials bikes run leaner though am unsure what I should be putting in this. What do you guys and girls run them on?

  8. I keep coming back to the idea of replacing the stock right-side crankcase cover with a single-piece unit from a YZ or IT. I've seen pictures of bikes with this mod and love the clean look. A while back I found some info on this but could not currently locate the thread. I remember that, as the YZ/IT motors changed, one model's cover was a direct fit while others needed to be modified (JB welded and filed - I've never had great results with JB weld). Has anyone out there done this modification? Does anyone know which model of YZ or IT would bolt right on? Thanks,

Many of you will have read about my old problematic TY250S, after a year of trying I managed to almost fix it, still oils its plug up but takes weeks to do so. Any way that one may be for sale now because I have bought a new one! It is a 1988 TY 250 R with a talon drilled disc conversion, I have just finished renovating it, tell me what you think...

Does anyone know where I can get fibreglass tank/seat to fit a Mini Majesty frame. They are no longer available from the Majesty website, but I guess someone still has the moulds.

I picked up a fairly original U.S. model 76 ty250. It still has the autolube hooked up. I know alot of people disconnect them and premix fuel. what are the pros and cons of doing this. I know about saving weight and piece of mind in not worrying about the pump failing. But has anyone ever really seen one fail? Do you think the lubrication is better if pre mixed.

Hi guys, probably been asked 100 times before, but having problems getting my TY175 started and staying running. Bought it to fix up and guy said it ran before being left on the shed for a while! I am hoping to road register my TY250 T/S with an authentic number from the year of manufacture, but didn't know what year the bike was made. One call to Yamaha Customer Services on 01932 358000 to give them the frame number and there you go, 1978. Excellent, especially as they are also going to provide me with a dating letter to accompany my application to the DVLA as well. Well done Yamaha.

Hi I was getting on great restoring my 1978 Ty175 when today I kicked it over and the kick start spun round and cracked the engine case. I had kicked it over a few times over the last week since I got it going and it was OK but the kick start would fail to reset occasionally. So I have a couple of questions Firstly, why did this happen? Secondly, how easy is it to weld the cracked case? Thanks Iain

  18. So now it looks like the crankshaft is out of tolerance for "Deflection Tolerance". Basically the crank is "spun" as the engine rebuilders like to say.. So in simpler terms, the left end of the crank is not lined up with the right end. The tolerance in the shop manual is only 0.0012" per side and I've got .005" of runout total. Does anyone have any experiance with "tapping" the crank halves back into alignment?

As anyone tried a DT cylinder on a TY175? I have an early DT jug and I'm thinking of using it. I did find that the exhust port is 2mm higher in the DT then the stock TY cylinder. And that the intake port is 3mm wider as well. Also the DT cylinder head also has a smaller compression chamber in it, but will need the fins cut down to work.

Just a word of thanks to all the Sages on here for their advice & knowledge. I have fitted an RD350 inlet rubber to my TY 175 and it DOES make a difference. Put some more holes in the airbox too. There is an induction noise now, excellent ! Cheers !
