Hello all, I am having a problem with my Armstrong CMT 250 (Hiro) and wonder if anyone may be able help. The bike hadnt been run for many years when I bought it so I wasnt too surprised that when I did get it going it sounded very lean on low revs and no amount of carb cleaning made any difference. Mains were a little noisy too so I stripped the motor and replaced all the bearings and seals thinking it was drawing air through crankcase seals. I also bought a 26mm OKO with a range of pilot jets to replace the worn Amal Mk2. However on rebuilding the motor the problem still exists. The bike has fair compression, although I havent measured it. It starts easily on choke and…

I finished my ty resto this week, so here are all the pics of each step (or at the least the ones i took pics of). Here it is how i got it in october last year, somebody had done everything in black, it was all wrong. here it is geting striped down.... next i sent the frame to the sandblasters, all the paint striped off it, then redid the frame in two pack silver, as close as i could get it to the original colour, going off old photos next step was the engine. as anyone whos ever riden at menai will know, menai mud stains! so everything was striped down, paint stiped, etc. The engine ran fine, but after pulling it apart, we found the bore was glazed, so i h…

Any of you Montesa experts out there able to confirm the oil quantity for the gearbox on a 1973 247 Cota? I have a spec sheet which says 200cc but that can't be right, surely? It states 300cc for the clutch which sounds ok as that's the same as a Sherpa but a Sherpa has 600cc in the gearbox, so 200cc for the Mont seems low. I have a Clymer manual and that says 200cc for the clutch and 300cc for the gearbox..... Just spent the last 2 days cutting open, repacking and welding up the middle and end silencers and what a **** job that is, so now I want to see if the pain was all worth it, get it fired up and see if the newly rebult motor purrs, just like my mate's did back in…

Hi. i've got a twinshock fraser honda 305cc, its been sat around for ages and i've now got some money to do it up and start riding it. can someone direct me to a website that tells me what i can and can't do to it to and still be able to complete in the normandale series? all i can find is this - CLASS B – Machines with Twinshock rear suspension as fitted at the time of manufacture and fitted with drum brakes, not included in Class A. i only have a bit of money so it wouldn't be anything major but i'd be gutted to arrive at a trail and not be allowed to ride. thanks for any help wayne

Not been on here a while, but some may remember my trials and tribulations trying to get this old bike back up and running: http://www.trialscen...-gears-damaged/ http://www.trialscen...y-gear-removal/ http://www.trialscen...9-crank-damage/ …and some more… Anyway, the engine is ON THE BENCH with a genuine intention to put all the many bits back together, and I can’t recall where these things go: Well, I’m pretty sure they go between the main bearings and the crankshaft seal carriers, can anyone confirm? And if so, why??! But what puzzles me is that there at least two different thicknesses of these shim things and I’ve no idea what I’m “shimming”. Note that the p…

21M25425 Has some different stuff from my '74 which is also a 21M. Clutch arm on top, different engine covers, Amal carb... The guy I got it from tied it down to bring it home and when he took the straps off, the forks stayed collapsed. Any Ideas. The seat/tank is a WRECK. What are we doing with these things these days? I still figure I did OK. Buying bikes from rednecks is interesting. He took $375 and a 30-pack of Busch.

Ever since my TY 175 became 205cc, I have been breaking kickstart levers frequently. Yes they are easily available but it becomes expensive having to keep buying new ones. I have experimented with different home made designs but am not happy with any of them yet. The Mini Majesty featured on page 38 of Classic Dirt Bike Issue 2 (Ted Salmon's bike) has a kickstart lever that resembles the Yamaha item but looks a bit more substantial at the knuckle end than the Yamaha item. Maybe it's just an optical illusion in this case but does anyone know of where TY175 kickstart levers of a superior design are available from? Thanks

Greetings All, I've recently found a 1974 Kawasaki KT250 in reasonable condition for it's age, running well. I've been considering buying it as a second bike to my Cota 311, to ride the aircooled series. What's the typical value of these bikes these days? He is asking around half what I payed for the Cota, which was slightly better condition, but given it's newer that is understandable. Is this a reasonable amount? Does anyone have much information on these? Would they be suitable for riding sportsman and eventually clubmans rounds? From research the biggest problems seem to be poor ability on tight turns and easily stalled, but would this even be a consideration at th…

Hi everyone, I own a MAR with a Whitlock frame, it was featured in a certain magazine a couple of issues back now (the bike was the blue one). I was wondering how much everyone thought it was worth now days, what with twin shock trials becoming very popular and the fact that there was only 30 of these models ever put together. I literally have no idea how much it would be worth, no intend to sell just interested to know. Cheers

Hi, I'm thinking of restoring an early 80's cota349, most people I talk to about 349's don't rate them for various reasons. Now I know there are more competative bikes out there ( Fantics, Majesty's, etc ) and I realise trials have changed somewhat, but will a well sorted "standard" 349 make a decent trials bike for twinshock type events? I'm not interested in faffing about changing frame geometry and footpeg positions to make it better. In 1980 Ulf Karlson won the worlds trial championship on One they can't be that bad can they? Any thoughts lads? Cheers.

Hi I am rebuilding a bultaco sherpa 250 with a view to having a go at twinshocking so am keeping it as original as possible but fitting it with practical bits as well. My question is i have just got some weld on big footrests from Dave Renhams to fit before i respray the frame and want to know if they should be fitted in the same position as the original puny items or is there a modification that would benefit the bike and me?ie upwards or backwards slightly? Thankyou in advance. John.

HI Guys, I seem to have an ignition problem with my early 70's Cota 247. I had a spark....a good one.....and then I didn't! Not totally sure, but suspect it may well be the condenser....so have another ordered to test. but.... I know that there is a suggested mod, where you take the condenser out and place it up higher on the bike, rather than down behind the rotor. Could someone give me a quick run-down on how you do this. Where do you put it? What kind of wire do you use? Where do you lay the wire - how does it get out from behind rotor and through cover? Thanks tons cheers eib

Probably going to buy the NJB trials Expert for my Cota 123, price is not to far out of my leauge, was wondering if anyone has some feedback on these? are they rebuildable? is the performance good? are they durable? a friend had the clubman shocks on his Cota 200 several years back and said they worked good. I would be interested in other shocks in the same price range. link: http://www.speedandsport.com/shocks.html
