Pre-65 Bikes

  1. Well as the title suggests does anybody know what size taper roller bearings will fit the headstock on a D14/4 Bantam ? I can machine the stem on the yokes to suit so within reason the id doesn't matter. Thanks in anticipation.

  2. Hi guys, i'm about to fit my clutch plates - using an eight plate clutch upgrade. My experience with more modern bikes is to soak the plates before fitting. As my engine is likely to sit on the bench for some time as i'm keen to do this. Consequently, i'm seeking advice on what oil to use? I'm not too fussed about price i'd rather run with something that doesn't encourage slippage. QM

so I have built my c15 almost completely from jumble parts and its time to get her running however there is a problem.. the timing side bush I have turned up is slightly tight I really don't want to strip it back down an if I do I will prob just buy the bearing conversion.. however any one else had this problem when using a bush for timing side? it is very hard to kick over altho not impossible.. doesn't help that im using an m20 kickstart borrowed from a friend.. any ideas on how to loosen her and get the oil pumping round to loosen it up a bit??? any comments welcome

Hello, I wanted to know the correct procedure for adjusting the clutch on my 1958 Tiger Cub. In a previous post on this forum, I found the following: Release the cable at the handlebar lever Turn the central adjuster in the pressure plate clockwise gently until I feel the clutch arm touch the outer cover. Turn the central adjuster 1/2 turn anti clockwise then tighten the lock nut. This gives around 1/2mm free play. Re fit the cable at the handlebar lever and adjust to suit - again a little bit of slack. I then only tighten the 3 clutch springs enough for their heads to clear the inside of the primary cover, but I check tha…

Hi: I pretend to race with this bike in the next Scottish Pre-65, last year I burned the ignition where beaking down is a nightmare; Meall Na Cruaidhe, fortunately it has now a good ignition fixed. I have the next the next troubles with it; 1.- Rear mudguard, I can not find an alloy rear mudguard for this bike, they are either short, too wide or too narrow. This one is built out of 2 plastic bultaco mudguards, but would like to put something more original. Maybe Spain is not the place to look for this mudguard. 2.- Is there any webb where to buy sprockets for it?? It is slightly "short" for me. 3.- Something apparently easy, as making the fork soft in the beginning and…

Afternoon All. So my Cub is all together and a runner. Warmed up and tickover set. Starts lovely on the choke from cold and also when warm. However I’ve got a jetting issue. Here are the symptoms - when I open the throttle gently it runs ok but when I snap the throttle open it muffs badly or stalls. - I think it’s therefore when it comes onto the main jet? - after running it for a bit a shiny new pipe is now a gold colour, so getting hot. Im now about to spend hours researching on the internet, but is someone can point me in the right direction or a good how-to link that would be great

  8. Assuming there is an alignment of the planets sometime in the near future and my new James frame materializes then i will need to get some wheels built so i'm gathering bits as i go along ready for if it arrives. So guys i've been offered alloy rims in both WM2 and WM3 but i dont know which to choose In the past i've never given it a thought and just used what was fitted, mostly WM2 i think, as std. I assume that WM2 being slightly narrower would give a rounder tread profile to the tyre and WM3 being slightly wider would give a more square or flatter tread profile. Would the WM3 however close the treads up and the WM2 open them slightly ? Which would give better gr…

Hi all, Got my engine in bits at the moment and while fitting an 18t crank sprocket, I`ve found it rubs on the casing, where it protrudes for the oil seal.1st of all, is this normal? I haven`t got the clutch back on yet so I can`t put a straight edge across, although the bearing hasn`t moved, the spacer is the same, and the new sprocket is the same width as the old one, so unless it was way out before, I`m guessing I may have to relieve the casing? Secondly, I`m thinking of drilling through from the drive side into the crankcase,, a la the `Rupert Ratio` book, to provide `weir` lubrication to the drive side and possibly improve breathing. Anyone have any tips or d…

I purchased a project C15 (1960) with no head steady and then bought one off of eBay. The one I purchased has a flat bar to connect head to frame clamp but it did not seem to fit so I used a simple spacer. It all fits together but is too wide and interferes with the gas tank. Is this the wrong head steady? Could someone describe what the correct one would look like? It looks pretty simple to make....maybe just longer where it attaches to the head. See the picture.

Hey, what size of sprockets should be on the primary drive of a b 40 for trials use (it's the wd gearbox)? on my bsa the chain is verry loose and the chain tensioner is fully in so i guess the chain is to long or the sprocket is to small? can you get the chains in different sizes? or can you just take a link out the chain? regards bob

Couple of Bantam build questions please, Is it a good idea to swap around the existing 2nd and 3rd gears, I found a diagram of how to do this on the web but if that lowers second then what happens to third gear. Is it instead better to buy the aftermarket second gear set which is I believe 20/27 ? Which ignition system and crankshaft weight is the one to get All BSA Bantam engine build hints and tips welcomed

Hi all, This is one of my Dad's old bikes and I was wondering if anyone could help identify it? Could it be the base for a decent Trials bike, In particular the engine? I'm not sure what to do with the bike at the moment and wondered if there was any potential? Thanks.

Hi from Spain: I own this Pre-65 bike with a Villiers engine. Some days ago the piston blocked because it was overheated (a hot spanish day). When te engine cooled down a little it started again with no problems. Now sometimes the piston blocks for an instant. The piston looks ok, as well as the inside of the cylinder and the rings. Is there anibody that knows why and how can I stop this??? Thanks in advance.

  18. Trying to identify this Royal Enfield so i can suggest a value to it's owner.I'm not selling it and won't make a penny out of it.The owner has lost his storage due to circumstances beyond his control, his friend contacted me as he knows little about older bikes and asked for advice.I've explained that dating Royal Enfields can be a bit hit and miss.He found an old buff logbook for a 1948 350 Royal Enfield which shows Frame number and Engine number as 19499 and reg as what looks like JFJ210 ,next time he goes he'll look to see if the numbers are on either the bike or the frame and engine next to it.As i understand it this would be a very early "Bullet" type. What i need to k…
